Hey guys,

I used to have a R32 GTSt and swaped it for a SR 180sx, anyway the 180 spends 99% of its life in the shed and only gets driven on the weekend...if that!

Currently i have a daily R31 Silouette, and im looking at selling it and getting a R32 GTS 4 door, RB20DE i have one lined up and im going to look at it on the weekend!

Anyway my questions are:

1) What to look for when buying a 4 door, are there any "common" rust areas like the 2 doors (down the sides of the boot)

2) The 4 door im looking at is a Auto RB20DE and i was considering putting a manual box (and all appropriate things to go with it), whats exacilly is needed, do i need a manual ECU etc...obviouslly clutch cylinders and pedals, what about tail shaft length???

3) Do i need to run it on Premium unleaded? and what sort of km's should i expect from it out of a tank???

4) Also i have my old SR20DET brakes off of the 180sx (due to 5 stud conversion (S14 hubs n rotors, R32 GTSt front calipers), are these an upgrade for the R32 GTS's?

5) And how to i tell a GTS from a GTS type S???? my understanding is the typs s has hicas and turbo steering wheel.

6) what sized rims can i get under it, i have my old 180sx rims, they are 17" x 9's on the rear 8's front, sorry not sure on offset...but they fit on a S13! (the rear runs 235 width tyres streached over abit)

7) Sound...will the RB20DE sound cool with a turbo exhaust on it (3 inch) or will it be too drowny??? Or will it be over kill and loose power due too the exhaust being too big?

thanks very much

- Luke

PS...i just miss the RB note....damn it i want that sound back again!!!!

ahh yes the sound of an rb, good to hear!

Haven't got time to answer your other qns, but always run it off premium it will drive/feel much better, you'll notice. i tryed mine on normal unleaded once and never again, it felt slugish to say the least.

i've got an apexi a1 exhaust system on mine, sounds great.....get something jap

3inch will definately make the car much more sluggish.. on my GTS i have a 2 1/4 cat back with JUN BL cannon, no mufflers in the line... straight through..I must say that i noticed a small decrease in low end torque believe it or not.and a very mild increase above 5000rpm. I get nothing but good comments about my exhaust note being sick nannas, best RB iv heard etc,etc..not that im bragging at all..

you will get slightly better fuel economy than a gts't driven mostly off boost.expect around 420-450km's o a tank around the city.. on the open road expect around the 600-650 mark if your not driving against the wind..

iv run my rb20de on normal pump fuel heaps of times... ran ok, untill my timing was advanced a few degrees then i found it pinged on very hot days...it does run best on premium.. iv found 95ron to be fine..

as far as the brakes you have, yeah they are definately an upgrade form stock GTS brakes.. GTS are single pot calipers... same size front discs though to the gts't.280mm. unless you have m spec brakes..

My understanding of how the models run isthat you can get a gts type s ( standard gts steering wheel, generally no hicas, blue background on instrument cluster, roundish front bar and no sideskirts etc) and a gts m-spec with pretty much all the same parts as the gts't just no turbo.

my wifes 4door gts't type s is practically identical to my 2door gts type s GTS..

    • Thanks for doing that Duncan! Makes you a good person in my books. We don't get kangaroos or wombats here. But we have bats and it's similar. AFAIK it's often the mums with a baby attached that get hit because they drop lower when starting from a tree. If you hit an animal, check on it. https://www.ifaw.org/au/resources/wildlife-rescue-app An app to get the closest wildlife rescue contact.
    • My dream is also to have a proper hoist, but I don't think it will ever happen. My quickjack is probably as close as I'll ever get, it really is very good though.
    • Yeah we keep on in the dailies, it is pretty poor how many animals get hit and the driver leaves without checking....have saved a couple of little ones over the years. Bit of a gruesome job though, pouches generally need to be cut open because they are so tight and often the joey doesn't realise mum is gone so they are still locked onto the teat. I checked the modules in front of the DS wheel where an oil cooler should go.... There is the radar unit - that can go for race use) One of the 2 HX water pumps, the silver cylinder. That needs to be kept but might be able to be relocated But the bad news, the big computer mounted vertically in front of the wheel (blocking any potential air exit) is the electric steering computer. That is required until/unless i do a hydraulic steering conversion, and in CAD based modern car design it is not like I can just pop a big unit like that somewhere else (plus the loom would be too short anywhere else too). So, the passenger side is OK to clear out (just use a smaller washer reservoir, potentially elsewhere), but the DS no beuno
    • Well, all the best with the new camry It was interesting to hear about the UK process, it is generally a lot more streamlined here with a shipping agent looking after all the import side (noting the exact final price can still be a surprise.....) and I've used a few different brokers on the japan (or US) side, and never had any trouble with any of them....luck of the draw I guess. You mentioned you didn't get the auction sheet (understandable since you bought it from a dealer, not auction), but I always try and get hold of that because they are pretty thorough. I've imported 2x R grade vehicles over the years and both were fine, repairs in Japan are pretty thorough compared to here in Oz.
    • BTW I measured the jack I have, it is 70mm at the saddle but you only have about 700 until it returns to 150mm high at the cylinder so it is good but no magic bullet.
