Dear All,

I'm going to be sending a personal import back from japan in a couple of months. So far I've got a couple of quotes for shipping but I've still got a few things I'm unclear about.

I've been given a quote by one company that has given me a tokyo/melbourne door to port quote at Y195,000 and a door -> door quote at Y360,000. If I do door to door it includes quarantine, steam clean, customs clearance and port fees (and of course shipping to an address in melbourne). My first instinct is this is a rip off for the door -> door shipping (they're just appealing to rich expats with less time than money) .. I have family in Melbourne so would it be a lot cheaper (and not too much more work) to just get the car to a port in Melbourne and then get a family member to take care of the rest? My concern is registration of the car (would it be possible for someone other than myself to drive it from the port?).

Basically, for less than 165,000 YEN ($2,000) could I get a customs broker to take care of the car on the Oz end and get a family member to pick it up? (I'm following the car back six months later).

Also, does anybody have any shipping companies they recommend?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Take option B - go to the shipping company yourself in Japan, for a Skyline you'd be looking at probably $7-800 US, then use a customs broker to clear it back in Oz, then get someone to pick it up.

Email Mark Hocking in Japan at www.mytrading.org [email protected] 0011819015176677 and I am sure he will more then likely give you a contact who to go through,

Nigel.

    • List all of your mods. It sounds like an aftermarket ECU hitting rev limiter. Like a valet mode, or a cold rpm limiter?
    • @Kapr Haha yeah thats the one. I missed that you had a built up engine, I wouldn't want to run it on there either then. It was good in my situation just to replace the original turbo on a stock engine. @MBS206Yep definitely not a replacement for anything name brand
    • You are selling this? I have never bought something from marketplace...i dont know if i trust that enough. And the price is little bit "too" good...

    • It would be well worth deciding where you want to go and what you care about. Reliability of everything in a 34 drops MASSIVELY above the 300kw mark. Keeping everything going great at beyond that value will cost ten times the $. Clutches become shit, gearboxes (and engines/bottom ends) become consumable, traction becomes crap. The good news is looking legalish/actually being legal is slighly under the 300kw mark. I would make the assumption you want to ditch the stock plenum too and want to go a front facing unit of some description due to the cross flow. Do the bends on a return flow hurt? Not really. A couple of bends do make a difference but not nearly as much in a forced induction situation. Add 1psi of boost to overcome it. Nobody has ever gone and done a track session monitoring IAT then done a different session on a different intercooler and monitored IAT to see the difference here. All of the benefits here are likely in the "My engine is a forged consumable that I drive once a year because it needs a rebuild every year which takes 9 months of the year to complete" territory. It would be well worth deciding where you want to go and what you care about with this car.
