Whats the easiest way to drop the db of an exhaust a few db, to under 90db coz i gotta go to bloody epa for a db and pollution control test next week?

I got a full 3inch system at the moment, with high flow cat and resonator. With a db tester from work its around 88db on idle when warm.I know they rev it to about 3000rpm for the test and i am sure it will be around 95 db at 3000rpm.

Whats the best way to quieten it down, and then ofcourse put it back to normal after the test? :D

The test is done by an independant EPA chosen representitive. I believe that there is a listing on your piece of paper which lists who can do the test.

A silencer will only be accepted if the silencer is welded in place. A screw in silencer is not acceptable.

They reved my car to 5k and you must come in under 90db. I got 89db with a stock GTR exhuast on a totally stock R33 GTR.

"The A'PEXi ECV (Exhaust Control Valve) allows you to control the loudness of your exhaust sound. The ECV is installed right after the catalytic converter, and adjustment of the valve is done through a cable run from the ****pit to the valve body. All you have to do is slide the lever installed in the car to get the appropriate sound. With the A'PEXi ECV you'll no longer need to get out of the car to fit a detachable silencer into the tail pipe."

get one of them, i wanted one on my old vl being a 308, i thought yeah dump pipes. but then i thought nar its jsut a shitty vl.

that's a factory option on the 34's :D

sidewaysmambo is testing an aftermarket one out...

jsut to let u guys know, from experience.

RWC places take pictures of your cars if they have suspision that u will put your goodies back or/ removal of things.

then when u get tried for defects and u think o yeah im cool its all going to be sweet ill jsut show em my new rwc cert (QLD)

they will go and ring the rwc company up, the rwc company will most probably have pictures and u will be caught.

and they do ring and follow up trust me.

and be nice to cops too. their only doing their job. but some are assholes.

this link might help to show how the test is to be done properly.....

Breakdown....

Test to be done in open area.....

Mic's to be placed on a 45 degree angle facing the exhaust....

RPM:

1-5 cyl 4,000

6 cyl 3,200

8 cyl 3,300

Rotary, 4,500

It should equate to approx 100-110 KPH (maximum speed of vehicle by LAW)

(on road of course...:) )

No one else to be in the location during the test.....

But have a read through it's very interesting....

oh and INASNT what sort of exhaust do you have....

Loz

:burnout:

MotoX: its not as bad as QLD yet here in VIC, but it will soon get that way I guess. I haven't heard of anything like that happening. I think they _do_ however have a register here so if you keep getting busted you're in trouble.

Inasnt: I'd try putting back the stockie air box back on first before you go trying to change exhausts. That could make a difference to the overall noise level.

Is there anything (safe) you can stick in say, the dump pipe to deaden the noise for a little bit. Like stick in and then pull it out later?

    • So, if the headlights' cutoff behaviour (angles, heights, etc) are not as per 6.2.6.1.1 without automatic levelling, then you have to have to have automatic** levelling. Also, if the headlight does not have the required markings, then neither automatic nor manual adjusters are going to be acceptable. That's because the base headlight itself does not meet the minimum requirement (which is the marking). ** with the option of manual levelling, if the headlight otherwise meets the same requirements as for the automatic case AND can be set to the "base" alignment at the headlight itself. So that's an additional requirement for the manual case. So, provided that the marking is on the headlight and there is a local manual adjustment back to "base" on the headlight, then yes, you could argue that they are code compliant. But if you are missing any single one of these things, then they are not. And unlike certain other standards that I work with, there does not seem to be scope to prepare a "fitness for purpose" report. Well, I guess there actually is. You might engage an automotive engineer to write a report stating that the lights meet the performance requirements of the standard even if they are missing, for example, the markings.

The initial downward inclination of the cut off of the dipped-beam to be set in the unladen vehicle state with one person in the driver's seat shall be specified within an accuracy of 0.1 per cent by the manufacturer and indicated in a clearly legible and indelible manner on each vehicle close to either headlamp or the manufacturer's plate by the symbol shown in Annex 7.   The value of this indicated downward inclination shall be defined in accordance with paragraph 6.2.6.1.2.   6.2.6.1.2. Depending on the mounting height in metres (h) of the lower edge of the apparent surface in the direction of the reference axis of the dipped beam headlamp, measured on the unladen vehicles, the vertical inclination of the cut off of the dipped- beam shall, under all the static conditions of Annex 5, remain between the following limits and the initial aiming shall have the following values:   h < 0.8   Limits: between 0.5 per cent and 2.5 per cent   Initial aiming: between 1.0 per cent and 1.5 per cent   0.8 < h < 1.0   Limits: between 0.5 per cent and 2.5 per cent   Initial aiming: between 1.0 per cent and 1.5 per cent   Or, at the discretion of the manufacturer,   Limits: between 1.0 per cent and 3.0 per cent   Initial aiming: between 1.5 per cent and 2.0 per cent   The application for the vehicle type approval shall, in this case, contain information as to which of the two alternatives is to be used.   h > 1.0   Limits: between 1.0 per cent and 3.0 per cent   Initial aiming: between 1.5 per cent and 2.0 per cent   The above limits and the initial aiming values are summarized in the diagram below.   For category N3G (off-road) vehicles where the headlamps exceed a height of 1,200 mm, the limits for the vertical inclination of the cut-off shall be between: -1.5 per cent and -3.5 per cent.   The initial aim shall be set between: -2 per cent and -2.5 per cent.
