Ok,

Lets not start any bitch fight here, I am just wanting to get an idea of a tuner to goto.

I have got no time to muck around with my car before the Drag wars to get it sorted, therfore I need to get the S-AFC done on a dyno.

I was wondering about the best place to take the car for a tuner who can set the adjustments quickly and correctly and hence saves me some $. Needs to accept credit card payment too.

It looks like people will finally get to see how much power my car doesn't make to achieve a 13.4.:)

INASNT,

That's right I don't 'need' a dyno to tune my car but, I do need alot of time and I don't have any before the trip and then very little time when I get back.

Besides, from the sounds of things Steve knows his stuff and He'll probably get more than I ever would have.

Steve,

I was going to get some ngk 7's since I expect the rev range has lifted since the cam gear etc has gone in. My old rule of thumb was 6's for 6000rpm 7's for 7000rpm 8's for 8k and so on. Does this sound like a plan mate?

I think people are expecting to see you have 250+hp dave, to justify your runs. What they dont realise is the mods, like the lightweght flywheel, wont show an HP gain. Dave might only pull 220hp with 10psi, yet his car has run quick times, just another reason why you cant use a dyno to gauge how fast a car is. Remember aswell, dave's had a fair wack of experience in racing cars, so he probably drives a lot better than most of us.

You know I just had another play with the S-afc and I thought 'yay - I've got it all sorted' cause I had a whole day without fuss and ping and a little bit more timing.

Then when I least expect it..... ping and knock. I have the tune sailing too close to the wind I guess but, boy does it go now!

I have added a little fuel in the correction map up top +3. I have kept a fair bit of timing to boot. I am tempted to go a colder plug and see if I can keep the advance but if what steve says about the 6ES is right then there is probably another way around it.

I have my trusty Autolite racing plugs that are a range cooler (7 equivalents) these I had with a gap of 1.1mm before the other bits went in and although a tad cold for the rich stock ecu maps they ran a little better than the 6ES up top all the same (then fouled doh! I expected that). I'll have to clean them up again. Anyone else tried the Autolites?

Steve,

Do you reckon there is more power to be had if I retard the timing (its about 5degrees past the last mark at idle) and then do a leaner correction using the 6ES plugs?

Also if you would like me too I can bring the car in sometime on the 14th of march.

    • I mean, I got two VASS engineers to refuse to cert my own coilovers stating those very laws. Appendix B makes it pretty clear what it considers 'Variable Suspension' to be. In my lived experience they can't certify something that isn't actually in the list as something that requires certification. In the VASS engineering checklist they have to complete (LS3/NCOP11) and sign on there is nothing there. All the references inside NCOP11 state that if it's variable by the driver that height needs to maintain 100mm while the car is in motion. It states the car is lowered lowering blocks and other types of things are acceptable. Dialling out a shock is about as 'user adjustable' as changing any other suspension component lol. I wanted to have it signed off to dissuade HWP and RWC testers to state the suspension is legal to avoid having this discussion with them. The real problem is that Police and RWC/Pink/Blue slip people will say it needs engineering, and the engineers will state it doesn't need engineering. It is hugely irritating when aforementioned people get all "i know the rules mate feck off" when they don't, and the actual engineers are pleasant as all hell and do know the rules. Cars failing RWC for things that aren't listed in the RWC requirements is another thing here entirely!
    • I don't. I mean, mine's not a GTR, but it is a 32 with a lot of GTR stuff on it. But regardless, I typically buy from local suppliers. Getting stuff from Japan is seldom worth the pain. Buying from RHDJapan usually ends up in the final total of your basket being about double what you thought it would be, after all the bullshit fees and such are added on.
    • The hydrocarbon component of E10 can be shittier, and is in fact, shittier, than that used in normal 91RON fuel. That's because the octane boost provided by the ethanol allows them to use stuff that doesn't make the grade without the help. The 1c/L saving typically available on E10 is going to be massively overridden by the increased consumption caused by the ethanol and the crappier HC (ie the HCs will be less dense, meaning that there will definitely be less energy per unit volume than for more dense HCs). That is one of the reasons why P98 will return better fuel consumption than 91 does, even with the ignition timing completely fixed. There is more energy per unit volume because the HCs used in 98 are higher density than in the lawnmower fuel.
    • No, I'd suggest that that is the checklist for pneumatic/hydraulic adjustable systems. I would say, based on my years of reading and complying with Australian Standards and similar regulations, that the narrow interpretation of Clause 3.2 b would be the preferred/expected/intended one, by the author, and those using the standard. Wishful thinking need not apply.
    • Yes they do. For some maybe. But for those used the most by abusers, ie Skylines, the numbers are known. The stock eyebrow height for R32/3 Skylines is about 365/375mm or thereabouts. The minimum such heights are recorded in adjacent columns in the database.
