Hey all, it's only happened recently a couple of times & I thought I'd better make sure it's nothing out of the ordinary....

Every time I drive my car it is idling for a couple of minutes, and then when I drive off it's all slowly & changing before 3000rpm until the running temp is where it should be & the oil pressure has equalised to it's usual just under 4kg/cm before opening it up too much. Last week I was on my way to work doing 80 in 5th, then put it into 4th to speed up a bit quicker & it backfired a couple of times & there seemed to be no response with acceleration because of it.

Then tonight I probably pushed it a little bit too hard in 2nd than I usually would at this time, and it let off 2 massive backfires one after the other (got the nice smoke thing happening too but was no different than going into 3rd for some chop). The reason I think it may be something to do with the oil pressure is that it only does it not long after its been started & it's still cold. If I've been driving for 10-15mins I can have my way with it like Rosie O'Donnell with a cupcake, but I can't seem to find why it does this when it's still a bit cold.

Has anyone had a similar experience or can explain what's happening here?? Don't know if more info is required but the engine is stock with usual mods (big hi mount), and if it's anything to do with timing it may be because of the timing belt which is just shy of 99000kms & is getting done on Tuesday. But I'm thinking if the belt is slightly on it's way out I would have more problems then just an occasional backfire not long after start up...........

Cheers :)

ok... its got nothing to do with the oil pressure.could be a number of things..

check the spark plugs. it sounds like there no good.

but it could be either a fuel pressure related problem. or an airflow meter.

but backfires tell me the sparks getting blown out :P

take it to a workshop ad get them to check the fuel pressure ASAP..!~!

Id say the car is still in the cold start map, will run different fuel mapping until it reaches operating temperature, usually richer, this would explain your backfiring.

    • Ok so i would love some advice here please, i purchased an R33 a few months back and its had a few mods done to the engine, its an RB25det running a Master ECU, 1200cc injectors, bigger turbo, oil cooler, oil filter relocation kit, Spool H-beam rods, acl/ross pistons. When i removed the motor from the vehicle (as its getting a respray) i thought i would compression test it and these are the following results. Cylinder 1-145psi, Cylinder 2-143psi, Cylinder 3-125psi, Cylinder 4-145psi, Cylinder 5-140psi, Cylinder 6-135psi this test was done with the motor on the ground and powering up the starter motor. I dropped the sump and found broken oil squirters on cylinder 3,5 and 6. I was told my rings are probably worn so i stripped the motor completely to get a new set of rings for it. The trouble is no one has these rings anywhere and they have to be custom made by Ross over in the states and will cost about $600+$200 delivery. My question is how can i tell if my rings are at fault and if they are still ok and is this price ok for a set of rings?
