Hey guys, I did a quick search, but didn't find anything too helpful. My driver's side window switch is stuffed, and i can't put the window down without jiggling and forcing the button. Even then it rarely works.

Once the window is down, the switch works fine, i can raise it fully or to a selected height, but not back down again. Passenger side - no problems.

This is driving me crazy! I had my mechanic look at it, he said he sprayed it with some solution that is very good for cleaning contact points, but no luck.

I don't particularly want to fork out the $200 the wreckers wanted for a second hand unit. Anybody got any ideas? or a spare unit for sale?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Cheers

Take it to an electrician ASAP- mine only went downhill from there. Now it's stick about an inch down. Does anyone know if there's a way to manually raise it?

Check the For Sale section for people wrecking their cars - thats where I got my power window switch unit.

Replace it asap as mine was like that and one day the switch got stuck in the down position (although it looked in the neutral position) and this caused the motor to wear out and die.

In short - this made me have to replace the switch unit as well as the power window motor - not cheap at all.

Try attempting to put your window up/down with your head close to the inside of the door. If you can hear a click sort of noise near your right elbow when you press the button, the button is ok. I have this problem with my series 1, I can sometimes get my window to go up or down, but when it doesn't, i can still hear a little click (the power works). My problem is that the contacts in the motor are a bit funny. I've pulled the door apart and looked at the motor and it's ok, but doesn't work when the axle is pushed in.

So in other words, Clicking noise = motor problem

no clicking = probably switches are buggered.

hope this helps.

WHAT STATE R U IN BRO CAUSE IF U LIVE IN SYD I CAN GET I WINDOW MODULE FOR U CHEAP

I'm in Melbourne mate. Can you please PM me a price?

I've found that if i hold the button up (while window is up) then quickly press down quite firmly it works, but i can't be stuffed doing that EVERY time. Makes me think it must be the contact points.

In my series1 R33 my window froze is the down position...

Had to get a new window regulator and motor, brand new the prices (with installation) would have been close to $1000, i used second hand parts and cost as $600 - $650...

And still my window wont go up and down when i want it to, have to continue to move the switch until it decides to come up....

you guys are all slack'as

take the switch out, pull it apart

you'll find a nice big carbon build up on the buttons connection points...

grab some fine sand paper and some electrical contact cleaner and clean those connections

windows will work after this

Have you actually tried this?

I couldn't open my switch box (even after I unscrewed all the visible screws) when I tried.

yes.. i did it yesterday

window works perfectly now

undo all screws

then get small flat head screw driver and prise open switch (has small clips on the side of switch box

depending on the age/condition of the car.. the solder on the circuit board might have corroded and you may need to un-solder and resolder all the wires back in.. however 90% of the time.. its carbon build up on the contacts of the switches that stops connection between the contacts and the circuit board.. hence why windows not budging.. or only occasional movement when switched are violently applied

you need to take the whole thing apart.. and sand all the carbon build up off the connection points

works awesome after that

(credit goes to foznice who showed me how to fix this problem)

  • 3 weeks later...

Which bit's the regulator? is it the little black box that the switch wires plug into, or is it further inside the door? i thought it was the box, but when a mechanic friend looked at it, he said something further into the door was the reg, and that it had it's own motor which was stuffed.

    • Harness is for a s1 Rb25det, and it is engine and lower harness.  the old harness had broken off plugs and was in very rough condition/exposed wires and splices etc. it is not able to be put back on the car, I could visually inspect to see if they had rewired any pins on the ecu plug. The fuel pump definitly isn’t turning off it’s an external pump and very loud you can hear it. Will look at the other harness tonight, am also going to pull the fuel rail and watch the injectors spray, will update here with what I find. Pretty sure at this point it has to be something to do with injectors because car will fire up on starting fluid and cas is clicking the Injectors. Fuel pressure is steady 43psi
    • Check the injectors flow evenly, and are actually flowing what you and the ECU think they should be flowing. If it's starting up on starter fluid, you have a fuel issue. Is it possible under cranking your fuel pump is turning off?   The harness you replaced, is that the whole engine harness? Do yourself a test, and drop the old harness on and plug it into the Z32 ECU. It's possible they've wired things different. From memory S1 to S2 is different in RB25 and you may have a wrong loom
    • I haven’t pulled the injectors to watch them spray yet but they are clicking from the cas and all of the spark plugs are wet with fuel. I’ve thought the cylinders were being flooded from the beginning and was hoping fuel pressure would fix it. Tonight I am going to pull the rail and watch the injectors spray. Don’t know how to test/diagnose if the plugs are firing in correct sequence but that should be a timing thing and as far as timing goes my car still has the half moon for the cas can only install it 1 way. And my mechanical timing is 100% correct I posted photos above. Confirmed with the balancer on and off.
    • I checked spark on all cylinders and they all visually have spark with the plug pulled and grounded, but plug 1 is the only one that fouled. This was a running swap that blew up and was rebuilt by a machine shop, put a new wiring specialties harness and did all gaskets, studs, and bolts while it was out.  compression is 135-150 across all cylinders. Aside from that from my understanding with the z32 ecu and maf the car should start regardless. The wiring for TPS and the dual 02 sensor/ dual knock sensor stuff shouldn’t actually stop the car from starting or even running well, (just slightly rich)  they just give fault codes. Car supposedly is supposed to start as long as you have z32 afm and ecu with the nistune base map and that’s info coming from a well known and trusted tuner who does a lot with SR/RB (Rsenthalpy). After more trouble shooting today where I’m at right now is that the cas is sending signal to the injectors they click while spinning the rotor, Fuel pressure is now set at 43psi, all cylinders have good compression and all of the plugs looked great (just wet with fuel) except for cylinder 1 which was very black (cylinder 1 has 150psi compression). all of the coils generate spark if pulled out and grounded out on the head. On the fuel pump car just pops into the exhaust. On starting fluid car will fire off. Hard to tell if all cylinders are firing off but definitley a couple. sounds like all of them but it’s only for 3-5 seconds hard to tell.
