Im just wondering when the time comes when you have to change your engine for one in better condition how can you make sure your getting something which is in good nick and is not just a thrashed item?? Are there any hints or things that should be looked at and done before purchasing a engine?? also what would be a reasonable amount to pay to recondition/rebuild a RB25DET back to its beautiful factory brand new condition??

looking at minimum $3000 for someone else to do the rebuild

just new pumps, rings and bearings.

-- hard to tell about engines unless they are still in a car, could try a comp test on a engine not in a car, but yeah, would be very hard lol

it wouldnt be THAT hard, just a bit of a prick. just remove all the spark plugs except the cylinder you're testing. get a 27mm socket on a rachet. then turn the bolt thats holding your harmonic balancer in... that'll give you a compression reading. anything above 160 is pretty good, and make sure all cylinders are within 3% (i think) of each others readings.

other than that have a look for water leaks around the block and water pump and general oil leaks around the motor.

anyone who sells you a motor gives you some kind of warranty of around 3 months so just make sure its in the car before 3 months and send it to a mechanic to get checked thoroughly.

have to disagree Joe.

you cannot spin the engine fast enough in this fashion.

the strength of the battery affects the speed of the starter motor when doing it in a car, which affects the results. most test results are between 100-200 rpm

the rings dont seal nearly good enough to seal at hand turning speed.
