1. Im looking at a new ecu, I have been leaning towards the LINK because this will eliminate the need for the afm, plus it fits in the original ecu case. Is this a good move ? also does the apexi pfc also eliminate need for a afm ?

2. I got my car dyno'd, my car is suposed to be 180kw@6400rpm stock standard, now when i got it dyno'd they got it to peak at 152kw at 104kph. Now im wondering if this is because Its an auto and the overdrive was off. It only dawned on me on the way home that it should have been dyno'd with te overdrive on ...

2) the quoted power (from manufacturer) would be the peak power your car does at the flywheel, manufacturers dont quote power figuers at the wheel, so yours is fine due to power train loss.

Whether u have a manual or auto, dyno runs shouldnt really matter cos when u put your foot down, it change gears once its peaked its rev range. Wouldnt have made a difference

The power fc needs air flow meters I think. From all cars I've seen with power FC's, they run AFM anyway.

Why don't you want to run AFM's anyway? I thought that if your chasing massive HP, go MAP sensors. But if your not going to go all crazy with HP, then stick with AFM's.

AFM are a major restriction on the skyline. Better to have a fully programable ecu to sense and map everything. When i go te link its goodbye to the safc and all the other piggybacks that i would have needed in the future.

Ive noticed that automatics tend to be ripped off on the dyno as well.

Ive seen several cars come away with 30kw less than their manual counterparts yet in real terms (on the road or track) they would run away and leave the manuals wondering what hit them.

As far as ECU, I have a link and am happy with it. Meggala is right though....it is all in the tuner. A good tuner will make a Link equipped Skyline bloody awesome, a not so good tuner will make Link look very bad.

Mine was tuned in New Zealand by Rob Bryan of WAR Motorsports in Hamilton with results I was more than happy with.

I do notice that the car has its "on" days and "off" days but I suspect this may have more to do with a high state of tune than it does with Link.

It could always be an idea to fire an email at Link Electrosytems in Christchurch and ask them who they recommend as a good installed/tuner in your area. I've always found they listen to requirements before handing out names so that they send you to someone best equipped and skilled to do your job.

The guy at JPC in Thomastown recommended I go for the Link rather than the Apexi PFC, he said he can tune the PFC's not a problem and hes done lots of them, but he still recommends the link as it is a board replacement so it looks totaly stock still (unless someone notices that u dont have an AFM anymore), u can tune it on a laptop/PC or there is a Handset for it also. He said tis is te main ecu that he installs and tunes there (mostly VL turbo's i would think thoe). But Autospeed had quite a few writeups on cqars hes done and totaly shocked people...

So maybe ask around if and see if anyone round here has had a link installed by them ..

He said he can supply and fit aftermarket turbo's, exhausts, intakes, suspension etc etc ...

Mick I'm not one for plugging people but I suggest you call the guys from ice performance. they can tune the power fc and autronic ecu and have a good track record on skyline .

the power fc has quite a few more load points than the link and the autronic can run even more.

ask any of the guys at the dyno day and you will hear what they were like. the power fc is a plug in replacement and looks exactly like the factory ecu. Its your choice they are also mad skyline enthusiasts

Yer thanks for the info meggala. Thats where I wanted to go originaly, i rang him twice and was goin to try get it up there on a sat mornin, but problem being if i have 2 be there by 9am i would have to leave here probably about 6:30, then he said it will take about half a day bec he doesnt have a dyno there, he had 2 go across town or something... So meanwhilei have to wait round half a day .. Which wouldnt bother me so much actualy if i was watchin him service and dyno it .. but i know that alot of mechanics dont like customers standin round watchin them .. not sure bout gerald thoe..

I still wouldnt mind gettin it up to him thoe, since its already had its service, its just basicly a dyno run then ...

Its a long way to drive fom here, but i hear its worth it ..

    • Sounds like you've got an interesting adventure ahead here with local support if you have trouble! My guess is that, unboosted, you will be OK with a small upgrade like -9. What will happen is that once the stock ECU sees more airflow than it expects it will add a heap of fuel and pull a heap of timing to be safe because it can't understand how it could get that much air without there being an issue. You will see clouds of black smoke and it won't pull hard through the midrange and top end. So, overall it will be a bit frustrating but should be OK. If you are still nervous set the base timing back 2o through the CAS, but it will be even more sluggish everywhere. As said above through...this is not my guarantee your engine won't be blown into a million pieces, leaving you looking for very hard to find parts A better idea is get a computer with logging ASAP, wire in a wide band O2 sensor and a use remote tuner. I've done multiple cars this way and while it is not as good as a specific tune on a dyno they can get it 90% right. I'd suggest if you can afford an R33 GTR these days you can afford an ECU and tune. And if you can't afford that you sure won't be able to afford the rebuild if it goes bad in the meantime,.  
    • Yeah it would be nice if someone took the time to put that sort of information together, but there are a lot of variations in looms. I think you are making this way hard for yourself if you just want to get it running....sourcing an SR20 with the right wiring will be a billion times easier than matching the RB loom to an S15 chassis. If you do end up going this way, you just need to trace every wire in the loom with a multimeter, 95% of them will go to a location you can confirm at the ECU.....and then post it up for the next person who needs it  
    • Just top it up with water, and keep a general idea of how much you added. It is normal for water to be pushed into and pulled out of the reservoir through the cap, and it should not be more than half full or it will be likely to overflow when hot. Any decent mechanic can do a pressure test of the cooling system to confirm if you have a leak. Keep in mind if it is only leaking a little and when hot it may well evaporate before you see it hit the ground
    • I'd ask the shop what they used and use that. Mixing coolants is sometimes OK, sometimes not, and you have know the details of each coolant to know whether it's a good idea or not.
    • Is it alright to top up with just another green coolant?
