Don't worry about the race suit Ben. All you need is non-flammable, non-synthetic clothing. I usually wear a pair of jeans (cotton) and a cotton long-sleeved shirt.

As for the shoes I wear a pair of suede joggers and I haven't been knocked back yet. Just make sure that neither the uppers or soles are nylon and you should be OK. A great set of driving shoes are Dunlop Volleys. Non-flammable, nice thin sole for great pedal feel and SOOOOOOOOO STYLISH!

As for licenses you can go for the $30 Wakefield Clubcomp license which covers just about anything you'll want to do at Wakefield, or a CAMS L2S license is $91 and will let you do track days, motorkhanas and supersprints pretty much anywhere in Australia.

GM's correct ... jeans & cotton business shirt are perfect. Leather shoes (business shoes) are good. But alternatives will be accepted.

We are actually going to relax the bonnet tie-down requirement, but it is still recommended that you use one.

As for the extinguisher, you really don't need one. If you want to install one, then the simplest idea is to make a bracket that sits between the passenger seat rails i.e. use the bolts on the seat rails to secure the exting bracket. This is simple to do if you have the right tools (usually welding required) and can easily be done for a small fee at a fabrication shop ... sorry, I don't have any particular place in mind. The other good thing is that it doesn't require you to drill holes or otherwise damage your car and can be removed without trace.

benm: did you get scared off by the Word docs? It's a serious question because normally a simple track day doesn't have these sorts of docs. It is intentionally based on a standard CAMS supersprint format. The idea was to make people that had already been on the track more familiar (and hopefully comfortable) with the idea of taking that next step ... into a competition supersprint. We are a little worried that it might scare people away if they aren't interested in the competition thing. Of course I want to stress that this track day is *not* a competition, rather more like a rehearsal.

At this stage, we have very few entrants that have pre-registered. About 15 I think. Since we require around 40 people to break even, we are going to make a big loss. Thankfully the club (HCC NSW) has enough in the bank to cover the day with the current entry levels. So we will not be cancelling now. But it would still be appreciated if people intending on coming at least let us know. We expect to get quite a few people turning up on the day, but it still stresses me out :)

If you are free on the day benm, at least come down. By mid-morning you'll be kicking yourself for not entering. So if your car is in decent condition, just do it! :burnout:

Can't make this one, but it would be good to see a stong turnout, I've been to 3 or 4 of these HCC days at Wakefield and they are excellent.

If you do take a tie down, it doesn't have to be too high tech, I just used a piece of rope last time.

As for the extinguisher, I fitted one using the moutning bolt for the back seat (passenger side against the back wall). Plenty of room, can reach if ever needed, and easy to remove.

Nah not scared off but I was like "woah didnt realise attending a trackday was so professional and involved.

I like the idea of the competition thats what got me reading in the first place. No point going down the 1/4 mile or dyno days unless you are competing (even if its against your own pb)

Sounds like the SAU Drift Day held at Eastern Creek not long ago, after 30mins of watching I was edging to get out there myself.

So if your car is in decent condition, just do it!

Its in great mechanical condition, I just wouldnt mind a lower seat (my head touches the roof now and then with just everyday driving let alone with a helmet on. I also wouldnt mind new tyres and upgraded rotors (all of which cost money). But on the other hand having a track day might kill my current tyres (a good thing) forcing me to buy a set of FM901's.

* What is tyre wear like on a typical track day like this with just steady hard driving (not deliberately throwing it sideways or anything).

* Brake wear for Wakefield? (Standard R33 Rotors and Bendix Pads).

* Im guessing things like subwoofers and stuff must be removed ? Also anything loose in the cabin must be removed? (Would that include things in glovebox, center console etc?) incase of accident...

would be a good warmup for the dyno day on the next day too

1) normal tyres can get hurt by a track day, especially if its hot (they can overheat and melt/grain). But of course that depends if you're giving it 110% all day! Plenty of the SAU guys use regular road tyres on the track, only fatz seems to be able to kill them in one day! Should be fine for a few track days on 1 set of tyres

2) make sure you've got more than 50% pad, they will wear much quicker - and you can't get new pads in golbourn (yes, I have had to try....) If so, you'll be fine

3) Anything lose has to be removed, but is your subwoofer loose?

One of the best things about skylines is their on-track performance, and their reliability while doing it. I've taken my stocker to about 15 days in 12 months and its only ever need brakes, tyres and 1 clutch. And in all those days, I've only seen 2 skylines retire with a serious problem.

As far as the tyres are concerned the really important thing is to keep a close eye on your pressures. You'll kill them in no time if they are too low. I usually go out with about 38 psi cold which goes to around 42 hot (although the front left gets bigger pressure change than the rest). After the first session I set all tyres to 42 before they cool. Check that they are all about 42 psi after the 2nd session and they should be pretty much spot on for the rest of the day.

Another fairly common mistake that I have been guilty of is to run too long on street tyres. The small tread blocks on street tyres squirm a lot under hard loads causing the rubber to get very hot and the wear rate goes through the roof. Most regular street tyres will handle about 3 hard laps before they start turning into marshmallows.

The bigger the tread blocks the less they will squirm and the more laps you can do before they turn to sh1t. This is why tyres like FM901's and Falken RealSports work so well on the track even though they are a regular (almost) street rubber compound.

As for brakes I usually take a spare set of rotors (never needed them though) and a spare set of front pads. I've gone through 1 nearly new set of Ultimates in 1 day at Wakefield.

Just be sure that when you finish a session don't come straight off the track and park your car. This will hot spot your rotors and they could crack. Just putt around the pits for about 5 mins to allow them to cool evenly and you should have no problemo.

It appears that I might need an engine rebuild... am going to get a second opinion first... but if this is the case I will only be spectating and if the honda guys don't mind I'll get out there and give a few pointers on how I try to do it.

Other wise I'll just sit in the spectator area and drink tinies untill my lift is ready to take me to where ever the take me!!!

hang on ... this doesn't look good (to me at least..) http://au.weather.yahoo.com/ASXX/ASXX0023/index_c.html its gonna be raining for the rest of this week according to the weather report..

i was gonna take my deposit to adrian today but its raining so hard and i am scared to go out atm... ( :D )

if its gonna rain on saturday i might have to pull out from this fabulous track day... :) (i don't think even attessa is going to make up for my bad driving... :( )

Rain or no rain, we'll be going ahead.

If it's raining, then you'll at least get some practice of handling your car at the limit in the rain. Hopefully you learn your car & tyre limits in the rain *before* you need it on the road. ;)

Given the ability of forecasters to predict weather, I prefer them to predict it will be raining. :D

nissaner I highly recommend you go if it's raining. :uh-huh: It's sooooooooo many times safer to be on a track than on the road, particularly Wakefield. This track has been designed to minimise the chance of damage if you have an off.

Another point is that's it's crazy fun to be out there in the wet. :D

In fact if it's raining I'll probably attend.....

    • From there, it is really just test and assemble. Plug the adapter cables from the unit into the back of the screen, then the other side to the car harness. Don't forget all the other plugs too! Run the cables behind the unit and screw it back into place (4 screws) and you should now have 3 cables to run from the top screen to the android unit. I ran them along the DS of the other AV units in the gap between their backets and the console, and used some corrugated tubing on the sharp edges of the bracket so the wires were safe. Plug the centre console and lower screen in temporarily and turn the car to ACC, the AV should fire up as normal. Hold the back button for 3 sec and Android should appear on the top screen. You need to set the input to Aux for audio (more on that later). I put the unit under the AC duct in the centre console, with the wifi antenna on top of the AC duct near the shifter, the bluetooth antenna on the AC duct under the centre console The GPS unit on top of the DS to AC duct; they all seem to work OK there are are out of the way. Neat cable routing is a pain. For the drive recorder I mounted it near the rear view mirror and run the cable in the headlining, across the a pillar and then down the inside of the a pillar seal to the DS lower dash. From there it goes across and to one USB input for the unit. The second USB input is attached to the ECUtec OBD dongle and the 3rd goes to the USB bulkhead connected I added in the centre console. This is how the centre console looks "tidied" up Note I didn't install the provided speaker, didn't use the 2.5mm IPod in line or the piggyback loom for the Ipod or change any DIP switches; they seem to only be required if you need to use the Ipod input rather than the AUX input. That's it, install done, I'll follow up with a separate post on how the unit works, but in summary it retains all factory functions and inputs (so I still use my phone to the car for calls), reverse still works like factory etc.
    • Place the new daughterboard in the case and mount it using the 3 small black rivets provided, and reconnect the 3 factory ribbon cables to the new board Then, use the 3 piggyback cables from the daughterboard into the factory board on top (there are stand offs in the case to keep them apart. and remember to reconnect the antenna and rear cover fan wires. 1 screw to hold the motherboard in place. Before closing the case, make a hole in the sticker covering a hole in the case and run the cable for the android unit into the plug there. The video forgot this step, so did I, so will you probably. Then redo the 4 screws on back, 2 each top and bottom, 3 each side and put the 2 brackets back on.....all ready to go and not that tricky really.      
    • Onto the android unit. You need to remove the top screen because there is a daughterboard to put inside the case. Each side vent pops out from clips; start at the bottom and carefully remove upwards (use a trim remover tool to avoid breaking anything). Then the lower screen and controls come out, 4 screws, a couple of clips (including 3 flimsy ones at the top) and 3 plugs on the rear. Then the upper screen, 4 screws and a bunch of plugs and she is out. From there, remove the mounting brackets (2 screws each), 4 screws on the rear, 2 screws top and bottom and 3 screws holding in the small plates on each side. When you remove the back cover (tight fit), watch out for the power cable for the fan, I removed it so I could put the back aside. The mainboard is held in by 1 screw in the middle, 1 aerial at the top and 3 ribbon cables. If you've ever done any laptop stuff the ribbon cables are OK to work with, just pop up the retainer and they slide out. If you are not familiar just grab a 12 year old from an iphone factory, they will know how it works The case should now look like this:
    • Switching the console was tricky. First there were 6 screws to remove, and also the little adapter loom and its screws had to come out. Also don't forget to remove the 2 screws holding the central locking receiver. Then there are 4 clips on either side....these were very tight in this case and needed careful persuading with a long flat screw driver....some force required but not enough to break them...this was probably the fiddliest part of the whole job. In my case I needed both the wiring loom and the central locking receiver module to swap across to the new one. That was it for the console, so "assembly is the reverse of disassembly"
    • But first....while I was there, I also swapped across the centre console box for the other style where the AV inputs don't intrude into the (very limited !) space.  Part# was 96926-4GA0A, 284H3-4GA0B, 284H3-4GA0A. (I've already swapped the top 12v socket for a USB bulkhead in this pic, it fit the hole without modification:) Comparison of the 2: Basically to do the console you need to remove the DS and PS side console trim (they slide up and back, held in by clips only) Then remove the back half of the console top trim with the cupholders, pops up, all clips again but be careful at the front as it is pretty flimsy. Then slide the shifter boot down, remove the spring clip, loose it forever somewhere in the car the pull the shift knob off. Remove the tiny plastic piece on DS near "P" and use something thin and long (most screwdrivers won't fit) to push down the interlock and put the shifter down in D for space. There is one screw at the front, then the shifter surround and ashtray lift up. There are 3 or 4 plugs underneath and it is off. Next is the rear cover of the centre console; you need to open the console lid, pop off the trim covering the lid hinge and undo the 2rd screw from the driver's side (the rest all need to come out later so you can do them all now and remove the lid) Then the rear cover unclips (6 clips), start at the top with a trim tool pulling backwards. Once it is off there are 2 screws facing rearwards to remove (need a short phillips for these) and you are done with the rear of the console. There are 4 plugs at the A/V box to unclip Then there are 2 screws at the front of the console, and 2 clips (pull up and back) and the console will come out.
