Hi Guys!

After putting up with squeaking suspension since I got the car, I decided to find out what the problem is so I thought I would pay $14 and get pedders to tell me

I never intended to have them repair it as they charge like a wounded bull and once I saw the $1700 price tag it made laugh!

I have had a look around the place but have not really found anywhere and hoped someone would be able to point me in the right direction or give some advice as to my options.

I am looking at spending no more than $1000 and would like to lower it at the same time. (R32 GTS-t) I will be buying eveything I need and then either fitting it myself or if I am too lazy, I will get someone (for a few cartons) to fit it for me...

This is the list of what I need.

-Shocks - front, but I will do all (peferably something with above standard performance - but it wont be a race car)

-Lowered springs

-Sway bar bushes

-Upper bushes

-Lower bushes

-Radius bushes

-Bump stops

I have the option of getting some super low king springs on Apexi damper adjustable shocks in good condition for $500 so that may be a good option for that but where do I go for the bushes ect?

Thanks for any help or advice!!

hi

i went into pedders yesterday with my gtst and asked about lowering it. one of my work mates is partly sponsored by them so they look after him. anyway they offered 45mm lowered springs with 20 to 25% stiffer springs for $130 a pair. all up $260 if you cant multiply. they said they are the best setup for all conditions. plenty of R and D has gone into them. we measured it up and the gards will sit just right with about 25 to 30mm wheel clearance.

thats just my opinion. i have also looked at a set of tein lowered springs from japan. 45mm lower and about 4 to 5Kgf/mm spring rate. they were about $200 but once you add shipping from japan you might as well buy local and if you dont suport it the prices wont come down.

from other research i have done whiteline seem to offer good stuff at reasonable prices. not sure how many bushes they do apart from pineapples.

whiteline can be surced through a few local places like autobarn.

just what i have found hope it helps.

Also i wouldnt recomend buying seccond hand coilovers as you get what you pay for and if there cheap than there cheap for a reason. and i dont think that they are cheap to rebiuld.

but if you have a drift pig that you only drive on the weekend then i wouldnt worry about seccond hand coilovers but if you drive lots (to work most days) then you are only gonna wear them out.

just sme more useles advice.

Ahahaha...R&D....Pedders....I wouldn't put those terms in the same sentence. I'd maybe use them for bushes and balljoints and so forth, never for actual critical suspension components.

I had a full pedders sportsrider package in my old R31; undersprung, overdamped in initial bump, underdamped for mid stroke and bottoming resistance, too slow in rebound...

Absolutely terrible, car crashed over the top of small bumps, slammed throught the travel on larger ones, couldn't react quickly for undulations in the road (i.e. where the surface dips after a bump it would hang a wheel in the air), turned in nicely enough but then flopped into mid corner roll understeer/scary roll oversteer... In short very very badly put together package.

I would never put their off the shelf dampers and springs anywhere near a car of mine that I wanted to handle.

Bear in mind too that you really won't get any handling advantage out of just lowered off the shelf springs; they are just stiff enough to maintain travel at the lower rideheight comparable to stock and really won't induce any useful improvement.

Coilovers are cheap enough new that its hardly worth buying secondhand, and definitely not worth dropping ~750 or so on non adjustable monroe/pedders/gabriel crap.

The reason these particular coil overs are cheap is because I wanted height adjustable suspension as my car is going to be used for alot of trackwork and the Apexi that was installed on my car when I bought it did not offer the range of adjustment I needed...if it was to be a road car only I would have stayed with the current set up...further more I am offering these coil overs cheap to Todd because I have indirectly screwed him around with the proposed sale of this suspension gear and I feel quite bad about it....Please dont make out that all second hand gear is rubbish...especially when you dont know the background

well I have second hand Tein coil overs in my skyline for about 3 years now and havn't had a problem with them. for $1200 three years ago they were cheap! thats postage to tassie too!

anyway sometimes second hand coilovers are ok......made a huge difference to the cars set up. :PBJ:

sorry bunta i did in no way want to steer him away from yours it is just my opinion so i voiced it.

todd did ask if any one could give him advice on what he could get and i was only telling him what i know.

id also ask your self how often you will be atending the track because i know a few people that are like wow i have fully adjustable coilovers but i wouldnt know jack on how to change anything let alone what that would do to it.

anyway i got my pedders springs today and we put the front ones in in about 20mins. its so easy. 3 bolts and away you go. they are cheap and will do the job on my car untill it becomes worth while getting coilovers. its lowered it onto the wheels nicely but i havent realy given them a trial yet. once i do ill post some pics and my findings. the best thing is i still have a firm but comftable ride and i can get over speed humps easy as.

just another option!

Thats ok :O I know you were just giving your opinion, I just wanted to clear up that I am not some dodgy gut trying to flog off crap parts

The car will be on the track most months..my brother and myself have been in motorsport for a while so adjusting isnt a problem

I would never reccomend lowered springs over standard shocks...it gives a comparibly nasty ride and wears the shocks quickly the valving and the springs need to match

hi todd

ive been riding on my pedders springs now for over a week and im pretty happy with them. even thoe i havent got matched shockies its still a firm but comfy ride and it has lowered it just enough to make it look hot. just needs bigger wheels.

when i come down on the weekend ill take you for a spin so you can see for yourself.

    • The average previous owner for these cars were basically S-chassis owners in the US. Teenagers or teenager-adjacent. I often tell people that neglect is easier to fix than something that was actively "repaired" by previous owners.
    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
    • No those pads are DBA too  but they have colors too. I look at the and imo the green "street" are the best.
