Hi All,

is there another number i can contact Matty Spry on, other than the mobile number that is listed for P.I.T.S. in the white pages?

does he have a landline or anything?

The reason i ask is i've been trying him on his mobile, but he's not answering, and it doesn't even give me the option of leaving a message ;)

i'm only wanting to run the car up on the dyno to check AFR's, and get someone to listen for detonation (properly, with headphones, not with some lackey with his head under the bonnet like alot of workshops seem to do, thats if they even bother to listen for detonation at all)

Mate, listening with your head under the bonnet is probably the best way to tell if a car is detonating. You can hear it clear as day when you have some ear muffs on, so I don't know why you think it's dodgy. Why would a work shop use the labour of two people instead of one person with head phones on if it was dodgy?? think about it.

you're kidding me, right?

by the time you HEAR detonation with your ears (without the use of headphones) its usually too late and the damage has already been done.

also, why is it that it is easier to hear detonation when you're standing outside the shed where the run is being performed, than when you're standing next to the engine with your head in the engine bay?

The answer is outside the shed you don't have the sound of the engine/dyno/other noises to contend with.

there was a good demonstration of this at the SAU Dyno night a while back...

everyone standing outside the workshop at allstar could hear that the car on the dyno was detonating, but nobody inside the shed really noticed due to the amount of ambient noise.

with headphones, you can pick up even the slightest traces of knock, LONG before you can hear them with your ears....

When you put your head in the engine bay you need to be wearing ear muffs other wise your kidding yourself. the head phones are good as well but you can pick up other noises which aren't detonation so it comes down to the operator. My point is that just because a work shop uses someone to listen for detonation doesn't mean it's dodgy.

You are right about it being easier to hear detonation when you are away from the car but it doesn't work with every car. It depends on ho lound they are ect!!

    • I had issues with my car today after removing the rear bumper. The headlights aren't working when turning the stalk but high beams are working and the rear tail light where the reverse camera is wired up won't turn on when the stalk is activated, but the reverse camera, tail light indicator and brake light all seem to work. I checked the fuses they aren't blown. I think the reverse camera could have possibly gotten pinched but shouldn't be as there is a decent amount of room. I did use the lights and loom for the license plate from the new bumper but also tested the old one in case but made no difference. This isn't for a skyline also. Any ideas what it could be? It was working when I drove I'm pretty sure, then on my return home I noticed my headlights weren't working.

    • Unless you're fortunate enough to buy a newer car, getting an older style plate to match your name/car is difficult because they've already been purchased.  Unlike other countries, personalised plates are locked to the country and not region, so there can't be multiple versions of the same plate but with a different area code.  Hope that helps
