Have had huge issues with my RB20det lately, probs are, ignition cutting out at various points in the rev range (not a miss fire like a plug or coilpack would do, but rather a total ignition cut of all 6 cylns) Some times the problem is only while drifting through corners and not in a straight line.. but a couple of times it has happened while on fullboost in 3-4th gear in a straight line and the ignition will cut out, come back, cut out quite repetively.

Now while this is happening, the Tacho also dies... so to me it indicates a loose wire, or a problem somewhere in the wiring of the ignition system. This resulted in me pulling my loom out.. have a look at it and tell me if all the electrical taping in black is factory or not? I know the red tape looks to be non factory...

the loom has been pretty molested, with none of the wires soldered, just crimped together..

heres another pic

like we talked about earlier, you can shotgun my loom when i pull the engine out as i have a 26 loom.

a bit of useless information, on the fuel rail the loom connects to 4 out of 6 injectors and the other 2 connect to the fuel rail loom, compared to the first 3 being connected to the loom and the last 3 being connected to the rail loom on a 32. made it a bastard to take out my fuel rail :action-smiley-069:

Hey Simon, do you know if you have a Cefiro/Laurel version of the RB20 or has your RB20 been taken out of a skyline (R32 ect)?

I have the Cefiro (earlier) version of the RB20 which has different AFM, coilpacks, ignitor box, ECU, loom ect ect.

Im pretty sure its a factory cefiro RB20det (no bov in crossover pipe, and rb20det on the buildplate, also a factory manual)

Dont tell me all the parts are different?! Coilpacks cant be, as i have 4 CA18 coilpacks and 2 RB20 ones in there atm, 9ignitor loolks the same but im not sure about the rest.

Phil: Rb rails are always a PITA to get out, likewise with a CA, SR's only nissan engine where you can do it in 10 mins... like a 4age

Yep genuine cefiro rb20dets have most sensors, ignitor, coil pack different to a r32. in fact i've found the ceffy's loom/igniter/coilpacks/airflow meter are same as r31. r31has a 128 bit ecu, r32 has 256.

Coils packs, while still having 3 pins, have the pins facing the opposite way to the r32 coil packs, hard to explain on here, but i've got no idea how you fit the ca (same as r31, and ceffy) coil packs and the r32 ones on the same loom.

sorry to sidetrack simon, doesn't really fix your miss, just a bit of info.

i'd say its a break in a wire somewhere, like you said.

good luck finding it

mines a cefiro RB20DET, and im having alot of trouble now with an AFM i just wired up (from a 32) and a stock computer (from a 32). could these be swapped for 31 AFM/Computer?

i believe you also need swap the ignitor module aswel as the firing order is different or something a rather....let me know if you do get the r32 cpu and AFM working on the cefiro motor and loom, as ill do the same when i cbf getting around to it.

    • The rain is the best time to push to the edge of the grip limit. Water lubrication reduces the consumption of rubber without reducing the fun. I take pleasure in driving around the outside of numpties in Audis, WRXs, BRZs, etc, because they get all worried in the wet. They warm up faster than the engine oil does.
    • When they're dead cold, and in the wet, they're not very fun. RE003 are alright, they do harden very quickly and turn into literally $50 Pace tyres.
    • Yeah, I thought that Reedy's video was quite good because he compared old and new (as in, well used and quite new) AD09s, with what is generally considered to be the fast Yokohama in this category (ie, sporty road/track tyres) and a tyre that people might be able to use to extend the comparo out into the space of more expensive European tyres, being the Cup 2. No-one would ever agree that the Cup 2 is a poor tyre - many would suggest that it is close to the very top of the category. And, for them all to come out so close to each other, and for the cheaper tyre in the test to do so well against the others, in some cases being even faster, shows that (good, non-linglong) tyres are reaching a plateau in terms of how good they can get, and they're all sitting on that same plateau. Anyway, on the AD08R, AD09, RS4 that I've had on the car in recent years, I've never had a problem in the cold and wet. SA gets down to 0-10°C in winter. Not so often, but it was only 4°C when I got in the car this morning. Once the tyres are warm (ie, after about 2km), you can start to lay into them. I've never aquaplaned or suffered serious off-corner understeer or anything like that in the wet, that I would not have expected to happen with a more normal tyre. I had some RE003s, and they were shit in the dry, shit in the wet, shit everywhere. I would rate the RS4 and AD0x as being more trustworthy in the wet, once the rubber is warm. Bridgestone should be ashamed of the RE003.
    • This is why I gave the disclaimer about how I drive in the wet which I feel is pretty important. I have heard people think RS4's are horrible in the rain, but I have this feeling they must be driving (or attempting to drive) anywhere close to the grip limit. I legitimately drive at the speed limit/below speed the limit 100% of the time in the rain. More than happy to just commute along at 50kmh behind a train of cars in 5th gear etc. I do agree with you with regards to the temp and the 'quality' of the tyre Dose. Most UHP tyres aren't even up to temperature on the road anyway, even when going mad initial D canyon carving. It would be interesting to see a not-up-to-temp UHP tyre compared against a mere... normal...HP tyre at these temperatures. I don't think you're (or me in this case) is actually picking up grip with an RS4/AD09 on the road relative to something like a RE003 because the RS4/AD09 is not up to temp and the RE003 is closer to it's optimal operating window.
    • Either the bearing has been installed backwards OR the gearbox input shaft bearing is loosey goosey.   When in doubt, just put in a Samsonas in.
