hey all, looking at buying a 180sx with an rb20det, tacho moves but is inaccurate (was going past redline when it would've only been around 6k) didnt take any notice of speedo but i think he said it's inaccurate too.

Just wondering if anyone here knows how hard it is to get it to work properly? My mate put an rb20det in his 180sx ages ago and apparently it was going to be a bit of a mish to get the tacho/speedo to work properly??

Is there a simple way to get it to work properly? The car I'm looking at has an R32 gearbox as well.

Also the odometer doesn't work at all.. not sure if this is from when they did the conversion or not..

This problem is one of the reasons my mates think i shouldnt buy the car so I thought i'd try and find out if it's as hard to fix as they say..

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

speedo is out because you need that circuit board that converts 6 cylinder pusles into 4 cylinder pulses so the factory 180 tacho can read it properly. I believe you can find it on the calais forums somewhere, how to make the circuit. Or get an aftermarket tacho and wire it up directly to the computer tacho signal wire.

Speedo should work properly if its a sr20 speedo drive in the r32 gearbox. Odometer i have no idea.

thanks michael! :P

My collegue just fixed his in an originally CA18, now rb25 silvia

From memory the speedo and odometer work off the single cable drive from the gear box and the ideal way is to get the cable to have Rb25 G/B drive onto a CA18 cable but if I remember correctly his is just bolted straight on with the original cable!

Tacho = You need to pull your instrument cluster apart and swap your tacho with an R32 RB20 tacho.

A little bit of effort but not something that would stop me buying a car!

What would stop me from buying a car is the fact that little things like this are a very clear indicator of the standard of the rest of the conversion. It's things like this that are fairly common knowledge amongst import mechs.

P.S. have a look on Nissansilvia.com as I'm sure it would have been cover a million times

Hope that helps

also, if the speedo is only out be a little bit, you could ring the cops and ask them if they know of anyone who can adjust it. i had a mate who's speedo in his falcon was out by about 20% and he got booked. while he was being booked he asked the cop if they knew somewhere he could get it fixed and they gave him the name of some guy who fixed them. don't know how he fixed it. i think they use resistors or something.

    • I've replaced the front brakes of my NA to 324 brembos and 350z calipers: i'm going for 225/40-18 up front and 245/35-18 in the back. I have Rays 7.5*19 ET35(225/35) in the front with 5mm spacers otherwise the calipers "lock up/ won't rotate". When i use the calculator i come up with 8*18 ET30 for 225/40...... but not sure i get problems with the calipers. Anyone riding around with 18 inch. that can confirm "that it'll fit"? In the back it's 7.5*9 ET30 (245/30) with the 5mm spacers, but there is no problem with the standard small brakes, so i want to take 8.5*18 ET25 (245/35).
    • Lol.. but then.. always come back to a JDM..
    • Glad to hear. If possible, get your tuner to check air's to make sure everything is still where it should be.
    • The problem with FB/Insta/Reddit etc comments relating to cars is simple. You get to ask a question once, and get one round of replies. For things that can actually be answered in a few lines of text, once, it's fine. After 6 hours, your original question is lost to the void. There are no follow ups, additional questions, anything. No project car is ever such a simple list of questions to ask. You need discussion.
    • Welcome.  Here's what I have noticed about forum vs FB..... FB; seems to be wallet racing, and the same few questions asked over and over. There *may* be some groups that are closer knit, but most have changed for the worse. SAU; unfortunately, no longer in its glory days. But....genuine people with similar interests. Not all about how much you spent and saying you dont have enough power. Sooooooo much knowledge available. Have personally seen people post up about literally topics I made myself, asking on FB like no one has done it before. Most has been done, and most of that is here.   If you ever feel like just general chatting theres the wasteland.  Other interests are also generally covered in other areas of the forum. Hope you enjoy hanging around. We would love to have you.   P.s. nice 32 😀
