Hi, im a new to skylines Australia, I am very interested in buying a Nissan skyline, now I just wanted to ask a few questions first. I am bound buy the bs NSW p plater rules, (which btw have proven no help what so ever in preventing provisional license accidents-report in newspaper). So I can not drive turbo or V8, witch is a real shame because I am definitely a fan of the turbo skylines...

But because of the fact I love the look of skylines alot, I have been thinking or purchasing a n/a 2.5litre R34 skyline... My main concern is weather to go for a standard auto all wheel drive model, or a semi auto tip-tronic rwd version. Im not interested in getting a manual at the moment.

Can anyone who has actually owned or driven either of these please tell me your opinions on these cars, power wise, economy, comfort etc...

I have recently lost my license for stupid speeding offenses, which will make me start my time on my red Ps again, which means a good 3 years until I get my full license and can drive a turbo car... so im not going to be speeding much anymore..

um I will be interested in a turbo when I do get my full license, are these n/a skylines easy enough to convert to turbo, weather it be full transplant or turbo conversion on the existing engine, or are there to many hassles relating to this, and a cheaper option being selling the n/a and buying a standard turbo?

Finally I was just wondering about the tip tronic, in the semi auto rwd, do they have some sort of limiter which automatically changes gears after a certain amount of rpm? or do they allow the user to red line and change when needed?

So ye any help would be greatly appreciated guys

Whilst i own a GTS-T, i think you'll find they have similar figures, just lower power/torque outputs.

Economy, particularly for the turbo models - but also for NA, is entirely dependant on your right foot. You mention being able to hold the car in gear with a tiptronic semi-auto, which instantly tells me you probably need to add 20 - 50% onto any figure most people will give you.

Comparing the car to a commodore is relatively simple. It handles light years better, a lot of this is to do with weight, but also in the suspension design. Less weight means it brakes better too.

Comfort in my R33 GTST is superb from an interior quality standpoint (I'd say it beats the last model executive commodore, and i have an R33 S1 interior), ride is slightly on the rough side (but significantly more responsive) of normal - however i have an aftermarket kit.

Regarding conversion to turbo - don't bother, don't wreck and devalue the car, sell it and buy a turbo model.

My honest opinion however is, just wait it out with what you have now, learn to drive (track days, driving course's and sheer kilometres), come back in 3 years or so and look at the option then.

thanks alot for that info nsanity, i really appriciate it... i know alot of people think i should just wait 3 years til i can buy a turbo model, but to tell you the truth, im far from patient and there no way i could wait 3 years lol, but ye about the tip tronic, can u hold the gears> or does it come to a point wear it changes after to high rpm? also about the rwd or 4wd opinions on these.. atm deffinitly steering towards rwd, very much like the tiptronic factor, cant understand why the 4wd model doesnt come out with this? (maybe someone can tell me), also u would loose a bit of power in the 4wd but im sure this will be made up in the handeling department.. anyways if anyone could help me out with those other things it would be a great help, cheers

i can't answer your tiptronic question for certain, but i would imagine so - however i'd assume that point (being that skylines are performance orientated) would be redline, or a smidge past it.

As i understand it, 4wd in Skylines is actually not what most people think 4wd is. GTR's are rwd till they lose traction, the majority of the time, Attessa will have all the power directed at the rear wheels.

Yes you will lose some power from the transfer case and whathave you, but we're not talking a ford 9 inch or something stupid - the benefits would easily outweigh the negatives.

    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
    • Here's an idea, answer the questions I asked you as they are trying to work out WHY the LSD will be binding up in a straight line.
    • You haven't driven many modern cars then have you? Most of them have sfa steering feel with their stupid electric bullshit steering systems.
