Recirc Pipes on GTR

I have pod filters & want to make a cold air box. I am looking to mount the afm's on the outside of the box & replace the dodgy rubber intake hoses to the turbos.

Upon inspection, I found that there are recirc pipes going from the turbo intake all the way under the car to the other side where the recirc valves (bovs?) are.

My question is why would they use such an elaborate setup when most cars just stick them somewhere between the i/c outlet & the throttle body?
