ahhh thats not a bad idea mate, thanks, when you say you drove a your 33 turbo does that mean you where driving it illegally? if thats the case, where you getting pulled over left right and center or what was the go there? how did you avoid going to court? (this is not me kicking your suggestion in the teeth stuartlaw_78, merely just curious :) )

I have never been pulled over in my 33. Got pulled over more in my celica than 33. I think in terms of getting pulled over etc has a lot to do with where you live and therefore where you are driving around. I think at the time i didn't really care all that much about the legalities of the car, many of the cops around my area wouldn't have a clue, but as i said it was only for 6 mnths. big chrome wheels, stickers, burnouts etc will prob get you pulled over...

ahh what you say is true, but then if i had those things on any car i'm sure i'd get pulled over...i guess ill test drive both and just see what happens, you said you had 3rd party insurance, but i read insurance companies won't pay out because it's an illegal car anyway?

i guess you where lucky enough not to get into any accidents...

ahh the decisions are endless and so hard...i live in a pretty low risk area, eastern sub's of melb but hrmmm...

I would say go for the NA R33. It has a bit of guts and obviously the look you're after. Just remember, the difference in insurance cost at your age between the turbo and non turbo, will pay for an RB25DET in a few years. So, get the NA and the do an engine swap later. That's what I'm doing :P

I'm 22, so a bit older, but insurance is still a big thing.

This gives you time to look after the little things such as stereo and interior trim etc. You don't need to touch the engine, cause you gonna swap it later anyway.

I don't want to get your hopes up too much. Its nothing like the turbo, obviously, but it does go compare to many other non turbo cars. If its got enough power to get sideways on you (which it does), without putting your foot to the floor, I'd say its a good starting point for a responsible P driver. :D

Go for a test drive in one and see what you think. After test driving mine, I had a grin from ear to ear, but every person has to feel for themselves.

Good luck with the search.

hey im 21 and just bought a 95 r33 gtst have about 3 yrs driving experiance now though just thought u might like a bit of an idea on insurance, ive never had a fine or anything, no accidents and im paying 1700 a yr on insurance with young and cool. they are a good company by the looks of it and let you pay by the mth however it is a cpl of hundred a yr more. my first car was actually turbo, but was ff, it was a old n12 et turbo pulsar. i paid 13000 for my gtst with 108000kms on the clock, bought it the day it came back from compliance, so you should be able to get a top na r33 for that budget.

hey man, i own a r33 non-turbz on my Ps too, its not blazingly quick but it still has abit of guts to it. With the insurance, i pay $550 for third party fire n theft.. i think a turbo r33 third party fire n theft is around the same price so the insurance doesnt really change a whole lot. I think they consider any skyline a greater risk car. But with driving a non-turbo r33 i have peace of mind that i will get paid out if i crash

theyre good cars, and i recommend one for a first car! i have nearly spun out in it, in the wet and if it was turbo i know it would have been a totally different story, with me wrapped around a pole probably. so just have a think of it all before you make up ur mind

    • I get that taking off the head is best but that's a bit much for "just" valve seals. I was just under the impression that one would be able to rotate to TDC and be able to temporarily drop the valve without losing it and effectively having to remove the head to then recover it. I never knew people actually pushed rope into the cylinder to do valve seals hahaha So just to confirm, just going to TDC will not work? In that case I know when I do valve seals I'll maybe just remove the head and do some other things while I'm there, or just wait until I do an engine build.
    • The old approach was to fill the cylinder/chamber with a length of rope pushed in through the sparkplug hole. The new approach is to connect compressed air to the sparkplug hole and fill it with enough pressure to push the valves up. Doing either of these things with the head on and the engine in the car is a lot less pleasant than doing it properly.
    • Can't you put the pistons to TDC and then do the valve seals? Or will the drop down too far to pull them back up?
    • One thing I can tell you is, do it properly the first time. If you encounter unexpected problems just let the car sit for a week or two if you have to get some other parts or figure stuff out.  I'd have said go and use as many OEM parts as possible but since you want to change the turbo later on a custom kit is probably the better choice. Since I have no experience with RB25 just compare parts diagrams and images before buying a line kit and it should be easy to see if it has everything you need. Amayama has very good parts diagrams and part number lists, that is what I used a bunch to figure out what I might need. And don't forget to plan ahead and possibly renew other stuff that's easy to get to while you're in there doing the turbo lines. Happy wrenching
    • Update 4:   Hi all, good news. Engine is running and all the gaskets and seals seem to be working as intended. No leaks so far, even the JB Weld seems to hold. I flushed out the old coolant a few times and put in fresh coolant, not Nissan stuff, I decided to try the Ravenol Protect FL22, they claim it works for a wide variety of JDM cars and the opinions on it by some people were pretty good. And it has the nice poison green color! And man am I glad I bought a coolant system tester earlier this year, vacuum filling works wonders on this engine. I can definitely recommend this to anyone still doing it the old school way. All you need is compressed air supply. Will have to do a small test drive as soon as I can, I removed the gauge cluster again as the tacho needle was still bouncing around a bit but it was much better than before already.  I also found some cracks on all 4 tires inner and outer sidewalls. Apparently these tires should 't be parked on for extended periods or be kept under 0 degrees during storage, which I did not know. Clearly the previous owner didn't look into those details either, he probably bought them just cause they are cool semi-slicks. I'm just wondering how tf I am supposed to reach 30-80 degree tire temperatures on the public road consistenly, these tires were never going to work for my use case. I'll probably order Continental SportContact7 ones as these are the best allround summer tire available right now and I don't think I'll need anything crazier for now. Do let me know if you have experience with various tires and which ones you recommend.
