hey guys, i have recently been defected (here in adelaide) for alot of things.

one that has puzzled me is for the factory fitted battery in my boot!

I have been told that i need to fit a dry cell battery, or vent to atmosphere.

i rang around and got a price for $540.. :/

my question: has this happend to any other 33 owners, why not rectified on compliance!

That's crap. No idea what he means by 'vent to atomsphere' (WTF?). I think he means a dry cell as in one of the sealed batteries, not the old school lead-acid cells which you need to top up with water. As for $540, you can do better, if i'm right then it shouldn't cost more than $120

Um, actually, both of you are incorrect. Before you go calling something full of crap, educate yourself.

The electrolytic process releases hydrogen gas. I have seen a car being jump started, and when the guy disconnected the neg cable (incorrectly connected to the battery itself - big no no) there was a fireball that singed his eyebrows).

anyways, the electrolytic process releases hydrogen gas, which builds up in the boot. The stock battery has a little hose that vents the gas out through a little grommet in the battery tray floor.

Eitehr get one of those venting ones, or a gel/sealed lead acid battery.

you think thats a load of horseshit, here in nsw I get hassled by engineers and blueslip stations for my boot battery, even tho its a gel-cell sealed type, aparantly I need to put it in a sealed box with a vent, incase someone decides to use a normal battery in the future.

haha, yeah maybe.

I thought the factory fitted battery in a r33 was a dry cell. As all cars from factory that are fitted with a battery in the boot had to be dry cell.Im new to all this but to me sounds like you got the guy at pits on the wrong day

The stock bosch batteries that come with skylines are all dry cell. Have you been through regency yet or is this what the cop said to you when he pulled you over? well when you go to regency dont even touch your battery, they have seen 1000's of 33's go through their with batterys in the boot, just make sure its secured tight and has the boot trim over it.

My old R33 (93 if it makes a difference) had the factory-fitted lead acid battery, but with the vent going through the grommet in the tray to vent under the car. AFAIK it doesn't have to be a dry cell if it vents to outside the car.

Incorrect. The factory battery is a standard wet cell normal lead acid battery. It has a vent hole, which has a pipe which runs throguh the floor and vents.

thanks guys for the awsome response. perhaps my battery is not from the factory, but its from japan.

i will have to shop around, i just had never heard of this before.

it will be the last thing on my list to clear my defect.

he wants me also to re-instate abs! i told him it doesent have abs, and he wrote on the notice all defects to be checked by a qaulified mech and supply report stating function correct!

...i love the system :)
