Hi

Just wondering if anyone can suggest to me what this problem is...

My tacho is spastic. It reads fine most of the time but then sometime, especially when under acceleration or going over 110klm's it flicks around or reads very inaccurately. Just wondering if it is a bad connection or a bad electrical part of some sort, since it only happens under certain conditions.

So any suggestions on what it might be? How to fix and how much it might cost?

Francesca

Hey Francesca,

Ron is right, it'll be your speedo cable. The R32s have it as a common fault based on their age, it is surprising to see a series 2 R33 with the problem.

The speedo flicks back from 110kmh to 100kmh? And sometimes bounces around when driving <40kmh?

Good news is that it is a cheap fix. New cable ($90 for R32) and DIY install.

Mark

Hey

Yeah its just the tacho that is spastic, nothing wrong with the speedo. Its just that the tacho mucks up either under acceleration (not all the time) and at speeds over 110km...

Maybe it does have something to do with revs but its funny that it would as it doesn't seem to discriminate at what revs it plays up at??

Thanks for your help!

Hey budy,

my '95 GTS-t S1 does exactly the same thing at about 3400rpm. For me it was physically the tacho, not any wiring. I have a brand new nismo cluster and no worries. But you dont need to spend much money to get yours working, there are plently of instrument repair companies around, or source yourself a second hand cluster.

sorry to hijack mildly - cowie was that speedo cable $90 from Nissan?

It was in that vicinity at trade/SAU NSW member price iirc.

Guys are paying around $80 for fitting but it is an easy job to DIY and take your wife/gf out for dinner instead :)

    • So, they admitted via message that they accidentally sent me a non Hella product. Then, hilariously, out of nowhere I get questioned about the legitimacy of my BMW intercooler for sale. This is the first *ever* enquiry in over 18 months. WIthin 8 mins of me telling "Total Engines" that I'd be reporting them for selling knock off's.
    • I don't know what it is supposed to look like, but I'd suggest confirming with Hella whether it is genuine. Some of the photos online do show parts with a Hella stamp on them. This looks sus.
    • Couldn't help but share the pics of my $350 "Hella" oil level sensor that arrived from totalengines via eBay today. It's like they're not even trying anymore ... And I think that's sad.
    • I've got a 2011 J50 that I imported six years ago. The unmodified factory AV system date and time has always been correct ( Japanese timezone of course ) up until last month. About two weeks ago, at engine start, the system wished me a happy new year ( in Japanese of course ). I can't think of anything that would make the system think that the date had changed, unless the GPS component has failed/reset somehow ? I checked the GPS reception in the system settings, and it can still see the satellites. Has any other J50 owner had this happen ?  It's no biggie, just annoying that it tells me the wrong date anytime I start the engine. 😅
