Looking At Buying An R32 Gtr, Need Your Advice!

Recommended Posts

from what ive heard and seen if its a cheap GTR its cheap for a reason. just before the end of the 15 year rule there was an influx of $16,000 GTRs from japan. thoe this is dam cheap it realy was pot luck as to what you got. like anything you can make it look good in a pic. basicly a rb26 engine rebiuld is around 8 to 10 thousand plus and thats what most of these cheap GTRs need. and if you happened to get one whith a good motor than you would probably get one with rust. a guy i know got one and his mate got wet feet sitting on the passenger side while driving it on a wet day. after a bit closer expection they found huge rust holes in the chassie rails. another friend got one fresh from japan, they payed a little more because it had lots of good bits. but on the trip home from the boat it blew up. six months and 10 grand later its fixed.

so basicly dont buy one from a pic. go and have a close look as they will cost a lot to fix. maybe even have a look for one that has had a fresh engine biuld as a few other mates of mine have picked up cheap freshly biult ones because people have brought them, blown them up, got them fixed but then cant aford to pay for the rebiuld.

hope thats hasnt scared you off. just telling some real life stories of tassie GTR owners.

There are enough nice gtr's in aus now, you pick one up for a good price that is in reasonable condition. GTR's are old now. Most of them have been hammered too, especially ones with gear on them. Look at as many as you can, test drive them, get them inspected independantly then take it from there...

Just budget at least 4k per year for maintainance and repairs...

GTR ownership is FUN!!! but it aint cheap!

yeah try and buy one locally i got mine from a mob over in melbourne called jsa imports.

My engine was shot, my gear box was on the way out it looked and drove like a dream when i went to look at it but the week later it came down nothing but probs...

Just look around alot of gtr's are getting around now good luck >_<

PLEASE PM MATTA21 IF YOU WOULD LIKW DETAILS ON THE IMPORTER HE WANT THROUGH

hey thanks for the feedback guys, was just wat i needed.

Save up for a lot longer and get a 34gtr!!!

i dont find r34's anywhere near as appealing as the r32's, too big & bulky 4 meh...sorry to any r34 owners who may be reading this.

cheers

If its for the road, buy from a good dealer or get something with history that has seen an engine rebuild. Check mainland prices as generally cheaper.

Pro Automotive built a new engine for Josh Saxby's R32 (gunmental) that I think is still on the market and a Hobart car.

    • Ok so after much research and talking with knowledgeable people I've got my turbo conversion done and it's all running great other than 1 small issue.  Car has remained auto with the na auto and tcm, I've used a stagea ecu with. NIstune board and everything is great other than my gear selection on the dash. It illuminates park, reverse, neutral, 3rd and 2nd. But nothing drive or what gear your in when you pop it into tiptronic.  I'm sure there is may e 1 wire in the ecu plug I need to move to rectify this. Dose anyone here have any ideas?   Cheers guys
    • Sorry I haven't been following all the detail, so you may have tried this. Does it idle with the tiniest bit of throttle you can add? You've mentioned the IACV, does it have an AAC valve and have you adjusted it at all (ie, screw the idle adjust screw all the way in, then back it out a couple of turns until idle is stable)?
    • My bad, I unplugged the one underlined in red instead of yellow before. With the car started, after unplugging the IACV (the one underlined in yellow), it idled at around 400/500 for 3 seconds before stalling. Attempting to start the car without the IACV will not start the car.   It does stutter and sputter for around 5 seconds before dying. However, immediately after starting it, you can already hear some slight sputters from the exhaust.   It won't start with the AFM unplugged. If it is when the car has already started, it stalls in a few seconds.   Yesterday, I did take some logs using Nistune of 3 scenarios. Car idling till it stalls Car idling and unplugging the IACV Car idling and removing the AFM I also have some previous logs of when the Car is idling till it stalls and when driving and it cuts. I am not really knowledgeable enough to understand what to look for. After every test, car idles rougher and rougher, until I have to stop. It will be fine the day after.
    • There is no difference between a 17x8 and an 18x8. The total diameter of the tyre needs to remain +/- the same (so you don't mess up the gearing, speedo reading, and clearance when turning front wheels..... so you just need to use a lower profile tyre on th 18 than you do on the 17. /rocket surgery.
    • I thought the same to start with. But then I thought it was one of those LCAs where the end of the ARB goes through a bushing in the LCA itself, instead of having an end link.
