No offence to anyone that has a TT, but they seem like RICE to me... Your car won't cool down sitting still while running, you need to drive it around slowly so the air flow can cool it. Ever noticed on a hot day that your car gets warmer sitting at the lights, then cools down once you start moving again?

That is the whole explanation (in a nut shell) to why they are not worth having. And that they are a great place for a car thief to hot wire the car from...

I always thought that a turbo timer wasn't just to cool the turbo down, but to give it a chance to slow down before shutting off.

Your turbo wheels can get up to a fair few rev's per minute while under boost and I for one like the idea of letting the revs slow down before I cut all oil and coolant pressure to the engine..

Just my 2cents

its to let the oil and water cool down in the turbo by flowing through it after a thrash rather than switching it off with boiling oil and water in it and it cooking. my turbo spins for a good 40 secs or so after i switch it off, even when idling.

If you were really driving fast enough to heat up the turbo then you probably used the brakes it to stop in the driveway.

Surely it makes more sense to do a lap of the block to cool the whole lot down. Not just the turbo, idling in the driveway.

The turbo is designed to run red hot, the gearbox isn't.

The engine oil cooler doesn't work unless you are moving, no airflow.

Ditto manual transmission cooler.

Similarly diff cooler.

Brake rotors get hot spots and warp unless they are turning while cooling down

Basically sitting there with the engine idling does nothing for everything else and very very little for the turbo.

Do a lap of the block to cool it down, it's better for your car.

i just wanted to know if there was one or not, i dont do any laps to cool down right now due to my lazyness. and i think a turbo timer has its ups and downs but who cares its better me having one then not having one, and if there really are coolers out there for all those things you mentioned lol then ill buy em to. i think this thread is about what is out there not if its a good idea or bad idea im pretty sure there are heaps of threads like that already. whats the bet you have all done your own mods to your cars and they are all FKN sic mods and whats the bet that people have said "no it cant be done" or "thats a shit idea" i know SK has a fKN out standing reputation for knowing his shit and being the first to complete rather extensive mods. cheers for your input. but i want heaps of goodies for my car and if it gets stolen let the insurance company deal with that and if parts break let my bank deal with that.

NOW CAN SOMEONE FKN TELL ME IF THAT FKN EBC/TT IS WORTH THE PRICE THEY WANT?

now i know my reasoning may sound really rice... but i fail to see why all the big brand names like apexi and hks with such a reputation to uphold will venture down the turbo timer manufacturing path just to capitalise off others ignorance with no real benefits to using the product.

I have a TT in my car (a generic brand one tho) ....normally i set it to 0 mins...but on some spirited driving days i'll leave it to run for 2 minutes before shutting down

EBC ...yes definately worth the price...although some are using the $22 manual boost controller without any problems..so its all a matter of whether u rather spend the extra money elsewhere...

TT ...u can get a generic one which works just fine.

I haven't seen anything else around that does both these things in one unit. No idea if that unit in question is any good or not...

You can get a bleed valve for ~$20 or an Apexi AVC for ~$500

Turbo Timers start at around ~$50 or so second hand

Up to you what you want and how to spend, if you can find someone to tell you that the unit in question is a good buy then go for it. Looks kind of big, hard to tell, is that thing a whole DIN size?

i read somewhere that the turbo actually continues spooling after the engine is turned off and therefore with the engine off and the oil pump obviously not running....the turbo spools without any oil and may cause premature wear on the bearings, the turbo timer is to keep the oil pump running and feeding the turbo whilst giving time for the turbo to slowly stop ....but hey...i probably read that off the back of a turbo timer packaging (aka marketing gimmick)

The turbo still spins while idling under the turbo timer's control, EXACTLY the same as it does when you let the engine idle under your control. The turbo doesn't know it's the turbo timer holding the idle.

Turbo timers were of some use when we all had plain bearing turbos, with heavy rotating mass and mineral oil in the engine. Now we have balls, lightweight turbines and compressors and synthetic oil in our engines. Time has passed the turbo timer by.

Spend the $50 to $500 you save on not buying a turbo timer on making the car go faster or handle nicer. It's much better value for your money.

By far the best value for money boost controller I have used is the Jaycar IEBC, have a read of the thread on it as to why.

    • From there, it is really just test and assemble. Plug the adapter cables from the unit into the back of the screen, then the other side to the car harness. Don't forget all the other plugs too! Run the cables behind the unit and screw it back into place (4 screws) and you should now have 3 cables to run from the top screen to the android unit. I ran them along the DS of the other AV units in the gap between their backets and the console, and used some corrugated tubing on the sharp edges of the bracket so the wires were safe. Plug the centre console and lower screen in temporarily and turn the car to ACC, the AV should fire up as normal. Hold the back button for 3 sec and Android should appear on the top screen. You need to set the input to Aux for audio (more on that later). I put the unit under the AC duct in the centre console, with the wifi antenna on top of the AC duct near the shifter, the bluetooth antenna on the AC duct under the centre console The GPS unit on top of the DS to AC duct; they all seem to work OK there are are out of the way. Neat cable routing is a pain. For the drive recorder I mounted it near the rear view mirror and run the cable in the headlining, across the a pillar and then down the inside of the a pillar seal to the DS lower dash. From there it goes across and to one USB input for the unit. The second USB input is attached to the ECUtec OBD dongle and the 3rd goes to the USB bulkhead connected I added in the centre console. This is how the centre console looks "tidied" up Note I didn't install the provided speaker, didn't use the 2.5mm IPod in line or the piggyback loom for the Ipod or change any DIP switches; they seem to only be required if you need to use the Ipod input rather than the AUX input. That's it, install done, I'll follow up with a separate post on how the unit works, but in summary it retains all factory functions and inputs (so I still use my phone to the car for calls), reverse still works like factory etc.
    • Place the new daughterboard in the case and mount it using the 3 small black rivets provided, and reconnect the 3 factory ribbon cables to the new board Then, use the 3 piggyback cables from the daughterboard into the factory board on top (there are stand offs in the case to keep them apart. and remember to reconnect the antenna and rear cover fan wires. 1 screw to hold the motherboard in place. Before closing the case, make a hole in the sticker covering a hole in the case and run the cable for the android unit into the plug there. The video forgot this step, so did I, so will you probably. Then redo the 4 screws on back, 2 each top and bottom, 3 each side and put the 2 brackets back on.....all ready to go and not that tricky really.      
    • Onto the android unit. You need to remove the top screen because there is a daughterboard to put inside the case. Each side vent pops out from clips; start at the bottom and carefully remove upwards (use a trim remover tool to avoid breaking anything). Then the lower screen and controls come out, 4 screws, a couple of clips (including 3 flimsy ones at the top) and 3 plugs on the rear. Then the upper screen, 4 screws and a bunch of plugs and she is out. From there, remove the mounting brackets (2 screws each), 4 screws on the rear, 2 screws top and bottom and 3 screws holding in the small plates on each side. When you remove the back cover (tight fit), watch out for the power cable for the fan, I removed it so I could put the back aside. The mainboard is held in by 1 screw in the middle, 1 aerial at the top and 3 ribbon cables. If you've ever done any laptop stuff the ribbon cables are OK to work with, just pop up the retainer and they slide out. If you are not familiar just grab a 12 year old from an iphone factory, they will know how it works The case should now look like this:
    • Switching the console was tricky. First there were 6 screws to remove, and also the little adapter loom and its screws had to come out. Also don't forget to remove the 2 screws holding the central locking receiver. Then there are 4 clips on either side....these were very tight in this case and needed careful persuading with a long flat screw driver....some force required but not enough to break them...this was probably the fiddliest part of the whole job. In my case I needed both the wiring loom and the central locking receiver module to swap across to the new one. That was it for the console, so "assembly is the reverse of disassembly"
