Crazy Fuel Gauge!!!

Has anyone got any ideas about this one.

Imported my R33 GTS 25T about 6 months ago and for the last two tanks,

the gauge has been playing up. It shows Full on the gauge until I've done about 270+ kays, then it falls sharply until it hits the Empty mark by about 420 km!

Have made no changes to car and it has only done it this time and last time! Could it be electrical??? Could it be something inside the tank?!?

The only thing I can think of that I did differently during the first tank was I really "gave it some" up a twisty section of road, through tight bends and chicane-type corners when that tank was still full (only about 3 km!). Any clues??? Don't really want it to be like this permanently!!!

in my 200sx i was doing a little bit of sidewayz action and the actual gauge in the tank fell offfffff...

maybe???

It seems to be a fairly common problem in the Skylines.

Do a search because there are a number of solutions/theories that seem to work.

I had the same problem, the sender has fallen off its bracket and sunk to the bottom of the tank.

Remove the top to the tank (near battery) and find sender and reattach the the metal bracket that supports pump and sender, it will click into place when installed correctly.

I've got the same problem...is it easy to access the fuel tank to fix this problem?

how accurate is it when installed correctly?? .. my gauge falls to a level stays there for a while, then falls to another level quickly .. stays there for a while and so on ...

Its easy to access, remove cover between boot and battery, a metal cover on driverside has 4 screws. remove these and you will find top of tank. Remove wires, unscrew large retaining ring (you may need to use drift and hammer..gentle.. to get it started) then reach into tank and and fish arround for the sender its a long tube like thing and will be on bottom of tank ujust follow the wires. It then clips to the metal bracket vertically.

Warning: Disconnect battery before opening tank as fumes will be strong, do not spend long periods in boot as the fumes will make you feel ill, take regular breaks.

The gauge is normally very accurate after 50 kms, mine is 100kms for 1/4 tank around town

I had a theory about this for a while....

On my GTS-T I was noticing that if I was really racing the car the the guage will plummet reasonably quickly. As soon as I was taking it easy for a while it would seem to come back up a small amount. It almost seemed to be indicating an estimate based on the consumtion rate rather than what was actually left in the tank. Surely they didn't put any smarts into the fuel guage??

Anyone else notice this?

same thing happens on my old man's 98 vs commo.......

i've always thought that it was just basing it on an estimation which seemed kind of odd.

But mine started after a sprint day at queensland raceway.

Kept thinking WTF why wont the gauge move them the last 100-150 down she came.

if i corner fast around a larger radius, around a left turn

the needle rockets up, all the way sometimes.

after i got a car back installed, the fuel gauge seems to be more accurate. before it sort of got stuck periodically.

Anyway, I'm a bit hesitant to open up the fuel tank. Sounds

like a recipe for fried eyebrows! Are there any mechanics out

there who can confirm the safety of this solution???

Oh yeah... I'm pretty sure every cars (analogue) guage will

move up and down depending on nose up/down or left/right

turns. I'm no physicist, but if I was I'd call it something like

- I don't know - the "Slosh Effect!?!". I've noticed it in ALL my

cars! Any physicists out there with the actual facts???

MRE - How did you get into circuit racing up here (costs - etc)? Is yours

a four door, too? What mods for a 14.3?
