today i was messing around with my air conditioning, trying to get it working cauz its so damn hot! found fuse 8 in the fuse box under the dash to be blown... was a 10amp fuse. replaced it with a new 10amp fuse, started the car and turned the a/c on. a/c compressor kicked in, then stopped! checked fuse again...BLOWN :-O

checked out the wiring to a/c pressure switch...connector all dirty and dodgy looking. cleaned the connectors up and checked continuity thru the connector, was all ok.

had no 10amp fuses left so replaced fuse 8 with a 15amp fuse. for about 25 mins the a/c worked perfectly until a very slight burning smell started to form somewhere in the engine bay (no smoke visible) then as expected the a/c compressor stopped and the 15amp fuse was blown!!

thats where i am at now, if any one has any sugestions or knows the problem please feel free/help me!

thankyou

ok cheers guys,

i had the coil re-wound by

RAPID REWIND

Brisbane QLD (behind sailsbury wreckers)

3875 2498

for those who need it in the future.

anyway, a/c working fine now!! only one prob:

radiator/thermo/aux fan not cutting in.

fan does not even work when engine is at operating temp.

all wiring to fan is fine

relay is fine

fan is fine

fan will work when correct switches in relay are bridged.

i self tested my a/c system with the diag mode

logged code 23 - Water temperature sensor

so im thinking new sensor and it'll be fine?

water temp gauge works by the way

any thoughts be greatly appreciated.

cheers

Ross,

The auxiliary fan is not operated by the A/C system but simply the temperature switch in the bottom of the radiator. It will only kick in once the water temp gets to about 96 degs from memory. Also the water temp sensor you are talking about is not the engine temp sensor but the sensor at the back of the inlet cam cover connected to a coupling wrapped around the heater tube connected to the heater hose. It has a 2 pin connector.

Cheers

thanks BH_SLO32, can u please tell me wire colours and a picture if possible of the engine temp sensor as im not too sure where to look for it.

you think that sensor is the failed sensor that the a/c diag mode is telling me about?

thankyou.

Yep, photos attached. Sorry I didn't really get a shot of the temp switch in the car but I took a photo of a spare one I had lying around.

Cheers

Thanks for your help ben and for the pics too.

unfortunately, although my temp sensor is showing a code in diag mode, i am thinking that it is unrelated to the problem i am having with my radiator fan not operating.

today i removed my temp sensor loacted at the bottom drivers side end tank of radiator and tested it. at ~96 degrees celcius i had perfect continuity thru the sensor to the 2 pins at the end of the connector.

in the fuse box in engine bay i tested all 4 ports for relay and all are ok. wiring and ground circuits are all ok.

all i can think of now is that the rad fan is not supposed to come on when the a/c is turned on as i have read in another thread where some clever fella has put a DIY on installing a diode so the fan will come on with the a/c.

thoughts on this please.

thanks,

- ROss.

it only comes on when the water is 96degC then.

that is the way its meant to operate, only as a failsafe so to speak if the coolant temp rises out of its standard range, which is between 76.5 and 90degC on RB engines, to aid engine cooling.

if your retrofitting the system, it will be an advantage to switch the fan on anytime the ac switch is engaged, it will lower the head pressures and make it more efficient.

Ross,

The temp switch for the climate control is not related to your thermo fan operation as you stated. In the past when I have installed thermo fans I replace the temp switch in the radiator with a unit that switches on at about 85 degs and turns off at 83 degs. I now also install an incabin switch just in case the temp switch fails while driving (has happened with my dads R32).

I am just about to experiment with a jaycar temp switch with adjustable hysterisis (adjustable "on" and "off" temp) for about $30. I will be testing it on my dads R32 which has dual 12" thermos which I have wired up with the factory thermo fan. Currently he is having issues with the temp switch (again) so this jaycar kit hopefully will offer better reliability. At $30 I don't have much to lose.

Cheers

    • I've heard the Tomei USA head gaskets are decent if you want to o-ring the heads but otherwise not recommended.
    • The 296mm rotors are the R33 turbo brakes. The 310mm rotors are the R34 turbo brakes. The calipers are nearly the same, but not. They're the same caliper but the R34 caliper has longer legs so that it sits out far enough to go over the rotor. The pads are the same for both. When you say, "I bough tsome EBC"....did you just mean pads? Or rotors? 310mm rotors fit under 17" wheels. There may be some wheels without enough clearance though. I can't fit my fingers between the barrel of my wheel and the "corners" of my R34 calipers, but there is plenty of room behind the spokes. This is on Enkei RPF1. You can fit 324mm rotors inside a 17" wheel, but I'd be willing to bet that it would be close to impossible with the Nissan/Sumitomo caliper (using an adapter, of course), because the Sumitomo caliper is fatter than the Brembo caliper that is supposed to go on the 324mm rotors.
    • Hi. Can someone tell me what brakes(and mainly WHERE) can i buy brakes on R34 GTT? I bought some EBC which SHOULD go on my car(i have GT but it has GTT brakes) but it does not fit, Brakes are "too" small(296mm) Are 310mm be good or? I have 17 inch wheel so no "big boys" but for me driving i just need one that fits and i can get here in EU/Czech.
    • Since winter isn't that harsh anymore in Poland, i will definetely drive it 365 days a year 😉. But if the snow hits i will try it for sure and let U know. Only swap i am planning to do is of course R34 GTR front 😍.
    • Hey. Very valuable information about pitwork, I will pay attention when buying any consumable parts 🙏 As for the carpets - I got a handful of information from nengun, from which it appears that indeed the carpets for the driver's side are OEM. They are not able to show me any pictures due to the long chain of different sales entities but after I place the order, as soon as the goods arrive at the nengun warehouse from which they will send the shipment to me they can send me photos and if my purchase differs from OEM I can immediately return it / cancel the purchase. I think I will give it a try 😉. Of course i'll let you know what's what as soon as i get them P.s. I know the topic is not relevant to the thread, but both nengun and amayama have these SICK 😍 trunk room lamps available. Do you know anyone who ordered them? I need to have one in my car
