Heya guys,

I Searched this topic earlier and took the steps from one thread by changing my oil, filter and using a Nulon additive. However the ticking has not ceased.

PROBLEM:

Loud ticking noise from engine. When car is at idle it is slower but still quite audible....at 1100rpm its nearly undetectable and revs any higher its fast and loud.

Like i said i read previous threads and ppl thought it might be sticky hydraulic lifters. But after doing the change of oil etc etc there is still no change. The noise however sounds quite metallic. I have just had a bottom end forged rebuild done so bigends can be ruled out as my mechanic has said.

Any ideas at all?

Sounds like a collapsed lifter?

Some help would be greatly appreciated.

Sam

i had a loud ticking noise similar to yours at one stage in the end it was just the exhaust manifold gasket had broken and the air rushing out caused a ticking noise. Maybe check if the end studs in the exhaust manifold have snapped (this will sooner or later lead to the gasket breaking) The studs breaking is really common so give it a look.

I dont think it is the exhaust manifold gasket at this time.

there is 130thousand on the clock and the bottom end was rebuilt 6 thousand k's ago. The Head though was not reconditioned....

Oil pressure is fine at start/cold and same deal when warm. Like i said the tick gets faster with more revs so gaskets dont sound like the culprit.

The noise started last night when i got home after a drive with a few spirited corners but nothing over the top....

im also guessing lifters but yer....let me know >_<

Just so you guys know in case for future reference...

The noise did turn out to be Hydraulic Lifters...i picked up a second hand set for $100 here on the forums and did the job myself :)

So if you hear a loud metal on metal ticking noise that escalates with more revs....take the head off and have a look :(

Thanks guys.
