I just don't get why remote start is illegal - the engine stops if the brake pedal is touched or the handbrake released so it's not a safety issue. And the car has to be in Park with Handbrake on for it to start, so is not a starting safety issue.

Andrew, I think it is related to the old turbo timer issue... illegal because the car is "in operation without being under the conrol of a driver". Same reason that my mate got in the shit with the cops for putting his car in nuetral and rolling down a hill... got a warning because he was not in full control of the vehicle!!

Nightcrawler i dont want to get into an argument with you.

I own a business therefore i am pretty sure i am aware of the legislation and legalities with alarm security systems.

Arguing with me wont make REMOTE START LEGAL full stop. Its not up to me its up to the authorities, i am simply stating what is stamped on top of the product boxes.

I suspect remote start isn't legal as its difficult to implement safely across the fleet of cars on our roads.

The later model manual's run a neutral switch, some of the older cars do not. Attempting to determine which do and which don't, what car can and can't safely run a remote start system would simply cost too and provide no gain. So government money wasted.

With regards to auto's... as they age, the shifter wears, depending on design its possible for the park shifter lock not to work correctly. A slight bump and its sitting in drive, maybe the park and neutral safety switch is also stuffed, so broom off the car goes. So it coule be seen that as cars age remote start is a safety hazard? I've seen this occur in old VL commodores, column shift xe falcon and t-bar TE cortina.

I'm not fussed either way i'm simply speculation why it could be seen as unsafe preventing remote start from becoming illegal.

So Turbotimers are illegal, but ones that do not allow you to keep the car running while the key is out are not? What if you disconnect the turbotimer's ignition lead so that the car turns off when the key is dislodged from the barrel. It would still be able to tell you how long you must wait with your car before exiting or removing the keys...

Paul.. Unless you are thrashing hard right up until the moment you turn the car off (unlikely on the street unless your in an accident) all that is needed is 30secs.

I've had mine for over 5years without any issues with oil lines or turbo's coking. I simply drive the last 500m-1km easyish then turning off the car is the last thing I do when leaving it. Belt off, get wallet etc etc.

OR.. if you driving to a car park.. by the time you find your car park etc its well and truley enough time for temps to get back under control.

So... if you do all this then a turbo timer isn't really necessary right? I've only had my skyline for 4 months and haven't got a turbo timer, but I do always give it 30 secs to a minute before I switch off the ignition. So do I need a turbo timer?

I have a turbo timer BUT only ever use the 30sec option as thats about all it needs, if any! It came with the car, and in saying that i wouldn't buy 1 if it didn't! Turbo timers are a bit of a wank factor item imho! but not quite as wank factor as those alarms that start your car........ :(

Unless your name is David Hasselhoff or you got a big turbo that you spool frequently, just sitting in your car for 10-30 seconds is enough/more-than-enough to bring the oil levels and heat exchangeness to nominal levels to shut off the car.

My turbo timer's (Blitz Dual-stage Turbo Timer) minimum time is 10 seconds, and even when I hit boost (my tt records cool-down from boost levels) by the time I reach my destination it will still be sitting at 10 secs, only if I give her a spirited opening toward the end of my desitination it may show 25 secs or so. It's only if you get the cheap Greddy ones that records cool-down from revs that you get cool-down periods of 4 minutes which is absolutely bullshit nissansilvia.com waiting times. If anyones sits besides their car while its counting down 4 minutes and its a skyline they need a kick in the teeth? :(

I've seen the way you drive. You don't need a turbo timer. ;)

As long as you just 'krooze' it for the last minute or two you can safely shut down the car and let the thermosyphoning take care of the rest.

just cause you got all that power there kel, doesn't mean you have to use it all the time ie. up through the hills. It's also understandable that you don't know your limitations as a driver and don't know the limitations of your car. Don't take shit from PK he's just a stirrer.

As for wank factor I love the old remote start, it's great for scarin the shit out of ppl and ppl definatley take closer notice of your car (walk far enough away from it not to scratch the paint work)

Kelz knows it was in jest. I've kroozed with her enough to know what she's comfortable with & that's why the 2nd half of that last cruise we had was catered with her in mind.

Rang up Just Car and they were cool with Mongoose (aus standards approved) and its turbo timer compatible. So at this stage this is the one im getting (from ebay brand new from a trusted seller - i hope, 100% positive feedback since '00 or sumthing like that).

Now i just need to find a place who wants to fit it for me as well as hook up my sub/amp. for a decent price. (once i find a place, ill order it). Any recomendations ? Btw, Complete Audio wont touch ebay alarms.

    • Here's the chart for fuel pressure vs. current draw, assuming your base fuel pressure is 3 bar and you run like 0.5bar boost on WOT, you should only momentarily hit 9amps here and there. (Ignore my prev post, I cannot read a chart these days it seems)
    • Those comp test results are not hideous. Whether they are accurate or not (ie, when that comp tester says 140 psi, is the real pressure120, 140 or 160?) is unknown to us. The state of the battery used to crank it over is unknown, etc etc. Many people around here would say that the absolute values and the spread are perfectly fine to just add boost and keep going. I personally would be happier with a narrower spread than that, but even the diff between 125 and 145 is not terrible. That one cylinder at 125 though, has probably copped some damage relative to the others. You should inspect the valves seeing as you've got it open. Do you know how to measure installed ring gaps? That, and an inspection of the rings themselves, is how you will determine whether they need to be replaced. If you're not good to do these things, take the block and the pistons and rings to a shop that is, and ask them for the go/no-go on them. Do the bores need a hone at all? If so, you might well be justified in getting some different pistons in order to get away from the ring supply problem. Whether you're happy to spend a lot more money right now, on more gear, rather than less money, but an amount that looks stupid given that you will only get a handful of rings in exchange for that money, is for you to decide.

    • Ok so i would love some advice here please, i purchased an R33 a few months back and its had a few mods done to the engine, its an RB25det running a Master ECU, 1200cc injectors, bigger turbo, oil cooler, oil filter relocation kit, Spool H-beam rods, acl/ross pistons. When i removed the motor from the vehicle (as its getting a respray) i thought i would compression test it and these are the following results. Cylinder 1-145psi, Cylinder 2-143psi, Cylinder 3-125psi, Cylinder 4-145psi, Cylinder 5-140psi, Cylinder 6-135psi this test was done with the motor on the ground and powering up the starter motor. I dropped the sump and found broken oil squirters on cylinder 3,5 and 6. I was told my rings are probably worn so i stripped the motor completely to get a new set of rings for it. The trouble is no one has these rings anywhere and they have to be custom made by Ross over in the states and will cost about $600+$200 delivery. My question is how can i tell if my rings are at fault and if they are still ok and is this price ok for a set of rings?
