hey ive got a 4inch stainless steel catback exhaust sitting in my garage jus waiting to get fitted, but ive been told that a 4" is too big and wont b as effective as a 3" exhaust. Whats the deal here, should i sell the 4" and look for a 3" or just chuck the 4" on.

opinions anyone?

depends on what u want. a 4 inch will give u good top end and average low to midrange and a 3 inch will give u good down low/ mid range power

stock turbo basically car is all stock except for a shitty pod which has to be changed and a dump pipe. Originally when i bought the car it had a turbo back exhaust fitted, 3inch from the turbo through to a 4inch from the cat, which is currently sittin in my garage because it had to be taken off for the roadworthy.

I thought when it came to turbo cars Biggger is Better. No exceptions.

It's only NA's that require back pressure etc...

But if its a road car then you have to wrry about police/EPA noise.

i beleive if ur exhaust is too large on an exhaust u will lose alot of bottom end due to no backpressure etc, but for high revs, yes better flow will mean better performance.

ohk that helps, but is it worth goin to the effort to gettn rid of the 4" n finding a 3.5 or a 3" or would you guys just chuck on the 4" since its jus sittn in the garage.

just run the best of both worlds. run a 3inch front/ dump and 4 from the cat back if its already sittin there :D

Go biggest you can. Considering your current mild setup, keep the 4" cat back, grab a 3.5" Turbo > Cat section.

If your planning big numbers later on, then a diff m.fold / turbo will require new front section anyway.

yeah a lot of funny information floating around with people saying youll lose performance with decreased back pressure lol . Yes, thats the theory with naturally aspirated motors

any exhaust you have is gonna have more than enough back pressure since the gases have to pass through our little friend, the turbine wheel.

Even back pressure in NA cars is a myth. It has been proven that the gains in NA exhausts are made in the headers. Biggest pipe possible after that with the compromise being the noise.

In this case. Chuck the 4 inch on, nothing to lose. If you don't like the noise then swap for a 3 inch. You may end up smack in the middle of the rich and retard mapping as a result with either a 4 inch or 3 inch though

In bigcarls example I think you'll find there are gains to be had by going bigger, though it's not necessary by any stretch.

    • A few small updates since the previous post and lessons. I decided to do a little interior light upgrade on the 110. I quite like the iilumo items, even if they're a bit of a premium over other brands. You'll also note the Stedi Fogs, that will go into the S15 fog lights as I needed to match the bulbs since I got the new ones earlier. I hope they fit as the body is quite a bit longer than your normal bulb.  Annoyingly, I managed to trip the fuse, which normally wouldn't be an issue until I located the fuse. I can't say I've ever come across this. I had lucked out that someone nearby had a spare, but oddly enough Toyota dealerships seem to keep this in stock. I ordered some to keep in my stash and as luck would have it, someone else nearby tripped the same fuse so I passed on the favour.  I also did a little service on the 110 ahead of some additional work coming up. It's been annoying that Goleby's stopped carrying this particular HKS filter for the 110, so now I need to keep them on order from Japan. I also took the opportunity to install a bash plate and number plate riser. The plate riser is such a cheap but nice fix to help really tidy up the car. I'm tempted to now also replace my headlights, on this car. Both items were from Project Aero.    I also needed to replace the rear tyres on the 110, and after trying to get it aligned learnt that I need to replace some bushes in the front end, so that's next.  Closing out this update with a nicer picture as always!

    • Appreciate the correction on the "ground", that will make a huge difference to looking at this. That makes complete sense about AF70/AF71 which is what I had come down to being the issue, one of these. I'll have another look in the ignition wiring when I get a chance next week. I'll also make up a jumper wire for running that AF73 test.  ECU is fine, relay itself is fine, pump harness is fine and the pump itself is fine. I am going to upgrade the Walbro 255 anyway with a DW300 I have since I need to replace the fuel sender and I'm going to upgrade the FPR with my chasebays kit ready for new plenum/injectors/dbw, but I'll get this working first. That's why this is so frustrating.
