Hey everyone.

Im booked in for my 2nd visit at regency on thursday but iv got another problem with my starter solenoid. My car is intermittanly not wanting to start, i.e not nothing happening at all when i turn the key. Up untill no iv just been giving it a bit ova tap with a hammer and it starts up ok.

Now i had this problem a while ago but i had the starter motor removed and checked when i had my clutch changed and my mechanic said that it looked fine. After re-installation i didnt have a problem for a number of months untill i degreased the engine bay again in preperation for regency trying to have my defect cleared. The problem is becoming worse and worse now and i want to try and fixit b4 thursday.

Can anyone tell me if it is possible for degreaser to get inside the solenoid and break down some of the grease inside causing the solenoid to stick ? I wouldnt of thought this would be possible as it appears to be a sealed unit. If not then it may just be a coincidence that the problem returned for the 2nd time after a good degreasing.

Any help and advise is much appreciated guys.

cheers

Try rigging up a relay that supplies power directly from the battery to the solenoid. Use the standard starter wire to switch the relay.

number of things i'd check - if u just degresed it, and its playing up, i'd check all cable connections and especially the plug, check your earth cable as that runs directly to the starter motor and solenoid.

IF that all checks out, the solenoid is playing up and probably has sticking contacts (common problem is old starter motors). If your handy with things, you can pull the solenoid out, buy some new contacts and fix it urself, or take it to an auto elec and it will cost you a few hundred for them to reco the solenoid.

When you turn the key to the "start" position, it provides 12V to the starter motor solenoid which in turn allows the starter to operate. The wire is connected to the started solenoid through a spade connector. Usually the problem you are experiencing can be attributed to a loose connection ie. the spade connector is loosely connected to the solenoid. Next time you have a problem starting make sure the connector is pushed on completely.

If this doesn't fix your problem I would suggest examing the starter wire which runs from the battery to the starter (big wire usually black with yellow stripe). Examine the connections at the battery and the starter and ensure the connection is good. If you are handy with a multimeter, check the resistance in the wire.

Given the problem is intermittent, I would place my money on a bad connection with the starter solenoid (the spade connection).

Let us know how you go.

Cheers,

Ben

Ok thanks for the advise guys.. Yeah iv tried disconnecting the solenoid and bolting the wires back up again but doesnt seem to of made a difference. I will do as you suggest though BH SLO32 and examine the wires all the way along back to the battery...

I rang regency and told them my problem just incase i cant getit fixed by tommorow and they said that they cant defect me again for having a dodgy starter in itself. Hopefully thats true.

cheers

Ok iv just cleaned out my spade connection and got my wife to try and crank the car while was in there with a multimeter to see if its getting 12v through the spade connection wire and it seems to be getting it. damn! im actually dissapointed because i thought it would be that. I also ran a new wire to the starter wire to see if the plug was dodgy and that didnt work either.

2nd hand or new solenoid it is then i guess.. although il be roll starting it onto the pits tommorow i think.

thanks anyway guys

    • I would just put EBC back on the "I would not use their stuff" pile and move on.
    • Can I suggest you try EBC directly again and link them to as many competitor catalogues as you can to show their listing is incorrect, eg https://dba.com.au/product/front-4000-series-hd-brake-rotor-dba42304/ If you have access to an R33 GTST VIN and your VIN, you could also use a Nissan Parts lookup like Amayama to show them the part number is different between 33 GTST and 34 GTT which may get their attention
    • So i got reply from EBC and they just this site where you can clearly see those 296mm fronts on R34 GTT. I send them photos and "quotes" that 296mm are not for 34 GTT and they are too small. But it will be very hard to return them cuz nobody here knows 100% and they just copy those EBC catalogue :-D https://ebcbrakesdirect.com/automotive/nissan/skyline-r34
    • Hi, is the HKS  Tower Bar still available ? negotiable ? 🤔
    • From there, it is really just test and assemble. Plug the adapter cables from the unit into the back of the screen, then the other side to the car harness. Don't forget all the other plugs too! Run the cables behind the unit and screw it back into place (4 screws) and you should now have 3 cables to run from the top screen to the android unit. I ran them along the DS of the other AV units in the gap between their backets and the console, and used some corrugated tubing on the sharp edges of the bracket so the wires were safe. Plug the centre console and lower screen in temporarily and turn the car to ACC, the AV should fire up as normal. Hold the back button for 3 sec and Android should appear on the top screen. You need to set the input to Aux for audio (more on that later). I put the unit under the AC duct in the centre console, with the wifi antenna on top of the AC duct near the shifter, the bluetooth antenna on the AC duct under the centre console The GPS unit on top of the DS to AC duct; they all seem to work OK there are are out of the way. Neat cable routing is a pain. For the drive recorder I mounted it near the rear view mirror and run the cable in the headlining, across the a pillar and then down the inside of the a pillar seal to the DS lower dash. From there it goes across and to one USB input for the unit. The second USB input is attached to the ECUtec OBD dongle and the 3rd goes to the USB bulkhead connected I added in the centre console. This is how the centre console looks "tidied" up Note I didn't install the provided speaker, didn't use the 2.5mm IPod in line or the piggyback loom for the Ipod or change any DIP switches; they seem to only be required if you need to use the Ipod input rather than the AUX input. That's it, install done, I'll follow up with a separate post on how the unit works, but in summary it retains all factory functions and inputs (so I still use my phone to the car for calls), reverse still works like factory etc.
