I don't even have a atmo BOV.. Its the standard Recirc.

Sure I have a CAI that makes it slightly louder but not that much louder.

Raaaa Sorry I feel rather pissed but I can't afford to be taken over the pits and be hassled by cops especially when I am at Uni and on the way to uni every day have to hit the air to recirc as there is some damn old car in front of me choking me with its exhaust smoke.

Joel .. LOL ur post just made my day hehehe .. and its good to see that we can write arsehole :P ... i remember this one time where i was driving along and i see this red commie ... so i accelerate a bit and i notice there were 2 old men driving it ... i thought to myself ... thats weird at this time of night ... then i notice all the antennas hangin out the back LOL it was a copper ... i'm sure i would of went pssshhhtt next to him with my stock bov too heheehe ... he only just glanced at me and i slowed down hehehe ..

isn't there a way that we can sue the cops if they make us go to an inspection and they dont' find anything(unlikely) that we can at least get our money back?? theres gotta be something that protects us from those "can't get to uni so i'll be a cop and defect people with cars i can't have" pricks??

Joel, I experience the same thing often .... on 3 separate occasions I have been booting it down Folland Avenue just near my house (where there is a solid median strip between the 2 directional lanes) and cops have been going the other way and give me the WTF? look (when they hear my BOV), then they bolt up to the next roundabout and do a u-turn to come after me. Fortunately I stick the boot in and get the hell into my garage before they know where I went. One time I got inside and peeked out the bedroom window, only to see the cop car slowly going down my street looking for me. I'm not sure if it's the same cop each time, or whether they talk about me :) .... almost famous :D

Ill tell u the best thing to do. File a complaint about the cop, make sure u get his badge number. Believe me for the 5 mins work for typing out a complaint against the amount of paper work they have to do after a complaint is filed is enormous. Do that to a few of em and im sure next time they will think about hassling ppl cause of the amount of paper work hassles they have to go thru. Just dont make it noticable that u took his badge number. The door swings both ways u know.

Nice call GTR King - official complaints, keep polite and objective, that will really start giving them the shits and might pull those dick heads into line.

ROFL

I agree with you on the sue thing hippy, just reckon it would be next to useless and the only person paying would be the one doing the sueing.... it is my understanding that as the law stands, the police dont have to know if a car is defective, just believe it may be - but getting defected for items that are OEM, or comply with ADRs would definately be worth making a complaint, or if the copper is being a rude arrogant SOB.

Would love to know exactly what and when a car can be defected.

Heard another interesting one yesterday, guy buys R32, gets defect within a couple of weeks of buying it (from a yard) - goes to regency and is told he has to take it back to stock completely, even has to remove his Z32 AFM (chipped ecu) becuase it isnt a stock item - crazyness.

I dont know if they test the drive the cars. If my car ever has to go over regency, I think I will be removing the sticker from the afm just in case they check.

Its all pretty incredible though, and afm for a z32 would be comply with ADRs just the same as a RB20/25 - its just these anal pricks that like playing god.

I have been doing a bit of research, and as yet I am still unable to find anything that would make it illegal. I have also been trying to find out why BOVs are illegal, and no luck. The only thing I could find that regulates emissions states that crank case gasses must go through the inductions system, and that all exhuast gasses must go through the exhaust. As for sound, that is measured from the exhaust, not during gear change, but I still find it difficult to believe that intake noise or BOV noise would possibley exceed the prescribed 89dB.

All very confusing.

By the way, does anybody know where a company is that provides engineers' reports for aftermarket modifications is in Adelaide, or have any ideas of the cost involved when getting mods certified?

Cheers.

Good luck and good work Steve!

I have the same question as you at the moment too.....may be we can do a group certificate :D

I might be able to tell you the answer when I hear from my friend.

What about CAI or air pod is that illegal and why?

May be speed magazine should do an interview with the Regency boys and set things straight for everyone?

Not too sure about pods here, in WA pod has to be secured properlly, and must not be a flammable type - whatever that means.

Would be interesting to see a list of illegal mods according to each states' inspection stations, just to compare seeing as we are all supposed to following the same ADRs.

I don't like BOV's anyhow..

For some reason I always cop shit for the PSHHSHHH noise. Even if I havn't made the noise.

A little while ago there was a bloke in van turning in front of me while I sat at the lights. He drove past and stuck his head out the window making the psshshhht.. Noise.

Driving down a sidestreet slowly I had a bloke do the pshhhht noise to me..

Then yesterday while trying to find a car park at the end of Hindley street I had a small group of school girls laughing then making that pshhht noise and then pretending to sneeze.

Not happy.. Jan..!!! And I don't even have one of those darn pssshhtht or boing psshht boing.. bovs.. :D

Doesn't bother me really just some times when I am not in a good mood it seems to make my blood boil :)

Well they be a necessary evil, even a stock bov makes noise, but they are good for the turbo. Also, I noticed a definate improvment in reduced lag on gearchange when I fitted mine (aftermarket one that is).

that aside, I dont like the fact that these people can order you to have an inspection because your car has a bov! they are fitted when stock, so whats the big problem?

I was told by a copper that they are illegal cos they are a 'fire risk' in the engine bay (as they do spit out a little oil and/or fuel), and when I pursued further asking if they ever knew of a case of one starting an engine bay fire they said no but .... and couldn't really give me a satisfactory response.

    • perhaps i should have mentioned, I plugged the unit in before i handed over to the electronics repair shop to see what damaged had been caused and the unit worked (ac controls, rear demister etc) bar the lights behind the lcd. i would assume that the diode was only to control lighting and didnt harm anything else i got the unit back from the electronics repair shop and all is well (to a point). The lights are back on and ac controls are working. im still paranoid as i beleive the repairer just put in any zener diode he could find and admitted asking chatgpt if its compatible   i do however have another issue... sometimes when i turn the ignition on, the climate control unit now goes through a diagnostics procedure which normally occurs when you disconnect and reconnect but this may be due to the below   to top everything off, and feel free to shoot me as im just about to do it myself anyway, while i was checking the newly repaired board by plugging in the climate control unit bare without the housing, i believe i may have shorted it on the headunit surround. Climate control unit still works but now the keyless entry doesnt work along with the dome light not turning on when you open the door. to add to this tricky situation, when you start the car and remove the key ( i have a turbo timer so car remains on) the keyless entry works. the dome light also works when you switch to the on position. fuses were checked and all ok ive deduced that the short somehow has messed with the smart entry control module as that is what controls the keyless entry and dome light on door opening   you guys wouldnt happen to have any experience with that topic lmao... im only laughing as its all i can do right now my self diagnosed adhd always gets me in a situation as i have no patience and want to get everything done in shortest amount of time as possible often ignoring crucial steps such as disconnecting battery when stuffing around with electronics or even placing a simple rag over the metallic headunit surround when placing a live pcb board on top of it   FML
    • Bit of a pity we don't have good images of the back/front of the PCB ~ that said, I found a YT vid of a teardown to replace dicky clock switches, and got enough of a glimpse to realize this PCB is the front-end to a connected to what I'll call PCBA, and as such this is all digital on this PCB..ergo, battery voltage probably doesn't make an appearance here ; that is, I'd expect them to do something on PCBA wrt power conditioning for the adjustment/display/switch PCB.... ....given what's transpired..ie; some permutation of 12vdc on a 5vdc with or without correct polarity...would explain why the zener said "no" and exploded. The transistor Q5 (M33) is likely to be a digital switching transistor...that is, package has builtin bias resistors to ensure it saturates as soon as base threshold voltage is reached (minimal rise/fall time)....and wrt the question 'what else could've fried?' ....well, I know there's an MCU on this board (display, I/O at a guess), and you hope they isolated it from this scenario...I got my crayons out, it looks a bit like this...   ...not a lot to see, or rather, everything you'd like to see disappears down a via to the other side...base drive for the transistor comes from somewhere else, what this transistor is switching is somewhere else...but the zener circuit is exclusive to all this ~ it's providing a set voltage (current limited by the 1K3 resistor R19)...and disappears somewhere else down the via I marked V out ; if the errant voltage 'jumped' the diode in the millisecond before it exploded, whatever that V out via feeds may have seen a spike... ....I'll just imagine that Q5 was switched off at the time, thus no damage should've been done....but whatever that zener feeds has to be checked... • I think Fitmit had some, have a look on there (theyre Australian as well)
    • Hah, fair enough! But if you learn with this one you can drive any other OEM manual. No modern luxury features like auto rev-matching or hillstart assist to give you a false sense of confidence. And a heavy car with not that much torque so it stalls easily.
