If its factory R12 have it refilled with R12A as its more efficient, easier on your a/c pump, hoses etc and environ friendly to the atmo than R134A.

Don't confuse R12A with R12.

Its also a LOT cooler and you don't feel the power sap when you turn the a/c on UNLIKE R134A. :(

You'll need to find some one licensed to deal with it; a lot of the people are not so if they try to bag it in order to sell you crappy R134A then go somewhere else.

The bloke I use is on O'Sullivans beach road Lonsdale. Forget the name of the place; he's on the northern side of the road around half way down.

R12A is a tad more expensive even though its basically BBQ gas. :P

Mine cost $138 for a vac and refill with dye. From quotes I received around 120-140 was the going price.

I was told to avoid the R134a with the R32/R33's air con compressor as its not designed and doesn't cope well with the high head pressure of the R134A gas. I remember when I had R134a in mine; it noticeably sapped power and made the aircon compressor audible inside the car.

The R134a is apparently 20% less efficient so it places a greater head demand on the condenser which in turn pushes hotter air through to your radiator and places a greater parasitic load on the motor via the compressor.

Only 'some' places deal with R12A is because in large quantities its highly flammable and apparently requires a license to work/purchase it.

nissans doesnt do R12A the guy their knew where i could go but he said he cant tell me? ahhaha and another guy said good luck in finding a place that do R12A.. ive been to a few places no1 seem to have R12A =/ damit!

When I first had mine regassed it wasn't that cold... Checked out the aircon evaporator and it was covered in dusty junk that was impossible to remove. Replaced the evap core with a clean one and it was so so cold it would make your bones hurt in your hand when placing it in front of the vent.

It would also make your cheeks very cold to the point where I used to manually turn down the a/c on fan speed 2. :)

Putting the multimeters temp probe in front of the vet I was seeing 0-2degree's. :( Super Icy.

ok heres the facts from a fridgy

R134a A/C systems run a synthetic based oil in the compressor, its in all new cars from '94' onwards

R12 is mineral, running either or in the wrong system WILL do damage to your compressor, which in turn will put more load on the compressor and give you that zap in power

my mate was very disgusted in the R12A is a tad more expensive even though its basically BBQ gas. statement and had this to say about it

R12a if CLAIMED to be LPG, is a timebomb waiting to happen as soon as you get a leak and a spark or point of high heat say a turbo

he said there is about 4-5 replacements for R12 and that he has a chart with all the different options

the one that kept comming to mind was ICEON 39 aka R413a

now further to my research on the R12a because my mate wasnt sure what the 'a' ment he said sound like some kind of blend but had no idea so i told him its somthing i can google and i come up with this

lol the bbq gas statement was not to be taken seriously.. But as you can see (propane/butane) it is partially a bbq gas. :yucky:

The 'if claimed to be bbq gas/disgusted' statement; it doesn't sound like he knows what R12a is??

I spoke to the gas bloke who's a neighbour and deals with R12a before having mine gassed.

He said its definitely not a time bomb in a cars a/c system like many say. The amount of gas within an a/c system he said its not dangerous and is no more dangerous than R134a. It requires a naked flame to ignite as does R134a.

The large amounts used at a workshop yes it is. He said within the industry he has never heard of R12a causing an explosion within a vehicles a/c system.

Also after a little googling it appears R134a is flammable at 720degree's and R12a at 890degree's.

So a lot of people who don't really know make a lot of generalisations. I remember something being mentioned of why R134a has become the gas of new car a/c systems; something to do with the people who make it; politics and being in bed with car manufacturers.

The bloke across the road said not to worry and go with it as its a good thing. :nyaanyaa:

    • You just need to remove the compressor housing, not the entire turbo. I would not be drilling and tapping anything with the housing still on anyways. 
    • So, I put my boat on a boat. First of all, I'm going to come out and say it. Why is Tasmania not considered a holy goal, an apex that all road-legal modified cars go to, to experience? This place is an absolute wonderland of titanic proportions. If people are already getting club runs for once in a lifetime 30 person cruises to Tassy then I've never seemed to see it. It is like someone replaced the entire place with an idyllic wonderland for cars, and all of the people living there with paid actors who are kind, humble, and friendly. Dear god. After doing a lap of almost all of the place I've found that it's a great way to find out all of the little things that the car isn't doing quite right and a great way to figure it all out. All in all, I drove for 4 hours a day for a week and nothing broke. I didn't even need to open the engine bay. This is by all means a great success, but it has left me with a list of things to potentially address. I also now have a 3D printed wheel fitment tool which annoyingly hasn't got any threads in it to actually assemble it. I might be able to tape it together to check the sizing I actually want to use, but it'll likely involving pulling the shocks out to properly measure travel at least at the front, and probably raise the car while I'm at it, at least in the rear. I scraped on quite a few things and I'm not sure how else to go about it. I was taking anything with a bump at what felt like 89 degree angles. And address those 10 other tasks. And wash the car. God damn it is dirty. And somehow, the weather was perfect the entire time - And because I was on the top of Mt Wellington it turns out it was very much about to freeze up there. I did something I typically never do and took some photos up there in what must have been -10 and the foggy felt like suspended ice, rather than mere fog. If you own a car in Australia, you owe it to yourself to do it.

    • Saw this replica police car based on a Mitsubishi Starion XX parked next to a 'police box' (it's literally a box) in Hirohata, Himeji City in Hyogo prefecture the other day. It's owned by Morii-san who is a local Mitsubishi Starion enthusiast. According to a local radio station blog post, he always wanted to make a police car himself based on ones he saw in his favourite Manga comics.  As it's illegal to modify a car to look like a police car and drive on the road, Morii-san tried many times to get permission from Aboshi police station headquarters nearby. They refused initially by after they got tired of that they granted him permission. However, the car can only be displayed on private property and obviously can't be registered as long as the police livery is present. The car was completed at a cost of 1.5 million yen (US$ 10,000) in addition to the car cost. A location was chosen outside Hirohata Police box where the car can easily been seen from the street. Morii-san has two other Starion road cars, both widebody GSR-VRs.
