changed spark plugs last week to NGK BKR6EIX plugs on my r32 gts-4

a few days later..after driving for an hour that day..car loses power and sounds very lumpy..and very weak....the problem came on and off kinda that day cos i made a few stops with hour or so in between drives...but on the way home it happened again until i got home. next morning, car runs fine. problem came back again y'day after driving for an hour as well, but i did a lot of driving y'day with not that long breaks in between so problem stuck all day. this morning, car was fine again, havnt driven it.

also, since last week, my idle wen car is cold kinda moves up and down from 800-1000 for around 30 seconds, onli then it becomes stable at 1000..

soo..any ideas? is it the spark plugs? coil pack? i realli have no idea and need to have a look at it tomororw..as i'm too broke to take it to mechanic rite now. any help will be apprecieted and apologies for such a long story.! cheers

hrm the old sparkies look pez..not sure if i actualli wanna put them back in..

anything else?

if u wonna eliminate the coilpacks as the cause you can unplug one at a time and see if the idle changes (which it should) if the idle doesnt change then that coil is shagged....(i think thats how it works)

while the coilpack cover is off you might as well try ur old plugs, if that fixes the problem then take ur plugs back and get them changed.

AiF

P.S. my car was running sh!t due to faulty coilpacks due to a pool of water in between the rocket covers.

hey mate check all connections on ignition module that sits on back of rocker cover as when i changed my plugs the plug wasnt locked in and a few days later it was doing the same as your car, pushed the plug and all was back to normal :D

i had a similar problem while i was looking for the right spark plugs for my RB20, as the RB engines are picky/fussy with plugs.

i've tried a few different NGK plugs, and have found BKR7E to be the best. they have a 0.8mm gap and won't blow out the spark under boost.

hope that helps. :(

  • 4 months later...

If i were you i would buy a set of the plugs the same as the ones u pulled out, and try them. Then atleast u know they should be fine since their were obviously no problems prior to u replacing the plugs, their is also a way to check the coilpacks by measuring the resistance between pin 1 and pin 2 on the coilpack, using a multimeter... if it is between 0.6-0.9 then it is ok othawise the chances are ur coilpack(s) is buggered. Although apparantly sometimes they can test up ok but if they have even a hairline that can cause a misfire so yeh... i really think that if it were plugs or a coilpack it would be happening all the time, especially under boost. hope that helps man.

i was thinking of putting the same ones back in, but i did change them cause i was getting the usual miss fire above 5k.

the problem happens when the car is warmed up and running for about 30mins of driving. if its cooled down or the next day it will run fine untill it warms up again and again happens

  • 3 weeks later...

I was having this problem yesterday. Coil packs 5&6 went open circuit on me for no apparent reason.

Drove to work, left the car for 8hours then jumped back in and on starting it it sounded funny.

Went home and with a Mulit meter checked all the coil packs resistence , 1,2,3 were 0.6 to 0.9 but 4 was 1.4 and 5 and 6 were nothing.

Splitfires on the way.

    • It's funny, as Ive seen plenty of people use them in cheap builds on YT. And they actually go okay, even though a lot of other maxspeedingrods stuff is terrible. Those turbos seem reliable enough, the only part being, a good quality turbo that is "identical" to it, will out perform it day in and day out. In both a lower boost threshold, and the ability to flow more air at the same boost pressure. As a cheap cheap replacement, not a terrible choice. For cheap and shouldn't blow in a day, not terrible (like other eBay/Temu turbos) for low cost and still decent performance, that's where the question comes in to play from the results I've seen. I'd actually find it hilarious to buy one, and strap it to a paddock basher or some other cheap as POS originally NA car, and send it to the moon!
    • The maxpeedingrods turbo is cheap and bolts on to stock parts. I think you just need a bigger silicone coupler for the intake. Its a cheap china turbo, but it's been running on mine for almost 3 years at 16-19 psi.
    • What do they look like right after you've tried to start it with everything connected? Also post photos of what they actually look like.
    • Also wanted to say, my new spark plugs are blackened looks like it's very rich. I have splitfire coilpacks but stock coilpack loom and ignitor. I tried directly grounding the ignitor ground to body as well.
