writeoff
As someone who has travelled 250kmph LEGALLY on the German autobahns I always wonder why Australia can't have higher speed limits. We have the space, we have the $ to spend on quality roads (not that they are) and we have an infrastrature that could benefit from shorter travel times ie large proportions of the population based in capital cities that are 800+km from each other. Cars and tyres are better built to cope with speeds higher than 110kmph and the Germans have shown over a 75 year period that fatality rates on their autobahns are no higher (actually slightly less than most western countries) than on roads with speed limits. I know it will never happen but I'm yet to hear a convincing arguement as to why not. Hey Dave, I went to Europe a few years ago for about 10 weeks to check out the Greek Islands but never got to Germany. I'd love to hit those Autobahns with a Bugati or a McLaren. I did it last year in a Porsche Cayman S which I hired for four days prior to the World Cup and took around the Nurburgring and then again in September in a Ford Mondeo but only got to 190kmph that time. I've already started to make plans with a mate to hire a Ferrari in '08 or '09 and go around the Ring again. Dohmar
lol wonder if it will ever stop, i cant stop spending money on my lines Heh yeah, theyre pricey but theyre worth it As to the speeding question. when I got my gtr the first thing i did was drive it to moonta, at night, in the middle of a class 4 storm (aka rain, thunder, major wind) and took the back route from pt wakefield to moonta. It stuck to the road, and i had perfect feedback, at no time did i feel unsafe. I know I could have gone faster but thats not the point, I was having a great time cruising at a pace the car was happy with. Now when I had my r31, even after dropping 4k on rims and suspension/brake upgrades, the 180 kph i did on burra to adelaide road was much scarier. As noted, speeding on public roads is probably not the best thing to do if you want to keep your licence, your life and your car. Not to mention any poor sods who might be in your path. Im not going to stand on a podium and preach BS to you, cause Ive done it myself... just, with age you get to realize how much power our cars do put out, and how fragile the human body is. Its fun as hell to drive fast, but its not worth your life or anyone elses. Sure enough we might have cars that are highly engineered and tuned to be able to safely travel at a high speed, but theres a time and a place for everything. I dont think ya'll should be so hard on viet, I've done much stupider things in my time. The man had the courage to admit it and acknowledge it wasnt such a bright idea. And as previously noted, port wakefield road is pretty much >the< road to go fast on in south australia. If he did that speed on rundle street, it'd be a hugely different story. The rest of the roads in SA suck nuts. And I agree with writeoff, we NEED AN AUTOBAHN. Would preserve the damage upon rural routes between major cities, would save time, and since our truckies wouldnt be snorting near as much meth, probably be a hell of a lot safer. AND, it'd give us a LEGAL way to crank our babies to the 300 kph mark. 3 lanes from Perth to Syd. As straight as possible. If we had an autobahn it'd certainly prevent a lot of fatalities, especially where pedestrians and cyclists are concerned. Keep the 'bahn for trucks and private vehicles and super bikes, and you'll probably have a good arterial route. Of course, the argument agsinst that, is that Aus is a shitload bigger than germany, that our temperature extremes have inordinate wear and tear on our roads and that if we did happen to build an autobahn across aus, that if there was an accident it'd be so large that getting emergency services to a crash site would be a difficult thing... I for one will lobby my local MP within the next week. I reckon ya'll should do the same. Can you imagine an autobahn from perth to sydney? How cool would that be? Excuses aside, if we can send dudes to the moon, we can get some smart guy to lay a road across oz. And viet I hope u dont sell ur GTR, you'll find the loss of licence goes faster than you'd think. Public transport does suck, but it'll be a good incentive to get ur CAMS licence, a helmet and some track time at mallala -D Edited December 9, 2007 by Dohmar Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/196562-bike-license/page/4/#findComment-3521491 Share on other sites
