Hey

Thinking about putting my air box back in my car. It's a HCR32 with few mods, usual shit.

I've got an APEXI power intake on it at the moment and it runs fine, no complaints its just that now the car is a bit more cop bait due to how it looks and I don't want the hassle of defects etc

I was just wondering if air box does/will do the same job as a pod filter without causing any restrictions.

I haven't seen/read much information about HCR32 air boxes but have read a bit about ECR33 and BNR32 air boxes being quiet restrictive due to the lower section design.

Anyways just wondering if reverting to the standard air box set up with a good panel filter will do the same thing my pod is doing without losing any power/response etc

I want it to perform the same just without the possibility of a defect.

Any one had any experience?

Butcher your airbox and hide the apexi power intake inside...but if you really want to go with a panel filter...open up the feeds to the airbox and i will perform just as well...

Its way to big. I think you can fit a HKS foam style filter or a TRUST air-inx which slight modifications to the box but they are foam based and they are a bit average quality compared to a Apexi P/intake.

Which section of the air box do you open up for better flow!?

The airbox's flow pretty well, i doubt you'd see any restriction with your level of mods, you'd get less heat soak too than with pods which is always good... but no cool noises. :D

lol yeah I get a nice flutter at the moment with the plum-back pipe and BOV blocked off, but I cbf with cop trouble.

Being on P's with a very 'limited' amount of demerits left I don't want to take the risk.

At the end of the day I want it to go fast and be that little bit quieter, rather than it be slow and sound good.

Its looking like the air box will be back on tonight, and the Apexi P/intake up for sale.

It will fit...i guarantee it...although the filter will be crushed ever so slightly...i know because thats on my car at the moment...

It will not really give much of a gain over the airbox for now but it does stop the cops from hassling me...and when i hit the track or strip...i just remove the airbox cover...

If you want to open up the airbox...you can open up the base and run another pipe to feed the airbox....

You must have hacked it good, I lined it up and had a look if it would fit but the way I wanted it to sit it wouldn't have worked.

As you said though, I don't see it having much more gain over just a panel filter anyways, because bottom line is that its still inside the air box.

I think I will cut the bottom of the box out a little more so it catches a little more air. The air flow is pretty good from the bar to the engine bay but there is a little mod you can do in the R32s which allow more air flow into the engine bay.

I hacked at all the air feeds on my airbox when i removed my front bar for the FMIC so i could make an CAI for the box, it helped, but as i said the pod has been significantly better.

I'm not worried about the heatsoak as i hardly ever hit boost on hot days - The only downer on the pod is more unwanted attention, but as of now i'm content with my setup but i'm keeping my airbox in storage in case of any troubles.

Whats going on?

Yeah I had my air box on when the car went in for compliance, and I was driving it around a fair bit. It did feel different to when I had the pod filter on originally but I don't know if that was because I had the stock exhaust on as well.

I run 12psi all day and it ran that with the air box no issues, but it feels stronger with the pod filter. Don't know if that's mentality thing though?

I have noticed in previous cars that the car ran better with the stock air box over a pod filter.

My air box sits perfect with the intercooler because it uses stock engine bay piping (return flow), no issues there at all but I will cut some of the bottom of the box out for better flow.

I think I might just try it for this week with the air box, I will notice a difference anyways since I have had the pod filter on for a quiet a period of time.

Just don't want the cop trouble man, car draws too much attention as it is because of the ride height and big cooler on the front, plus its loud with the straight through exhaust. I can get away with the rest probably just the pod is the only thing that could score me a defect.

the air box got no-where near as hot and the car always almost as punchy after stop go traffic as it did on the freeway.

with the pod it was heatsoak heaven making the laggy rb20 feel even doughier.

just use the stock box. Even with stock filter..

At 12 psi i really wouldn't bother so much...just whack the airbox on and open it up slightly...

I run the car at 18-19psi daily and still have the pod hidden in the airbox...

Awesome, I will open it up tonight and fit it all back in with a new panel filter.

i've been using the standard airbox with a cold air intake running from the front bar and feeding straight into the snorkel.

a couple of weeks back i put on a huge 6" M's K&N pod and instantly noticed sufficient lag, even with the cold air intake pipe in place. i've always been against pods because of heatsoak.

my next mission is to cut a hole with a holesaw undeneath the airbox and through the chassis, and place a 2nd cold air intake pipe there. might even replace my filter with a bit of stockings for better air intake. :D

My car did sorta feel more punchy with the air box, but I reckon it struggled up top. But agan I wasn't sure if that was because of the air box or the stock exhaust.

struggling up top would have been the stock exhaust mate.. lol.. you'll find out why when you remove the stock dump pipe and compare it to your aftermarket choice.

Haha yeah got the turbo back on now but when I put the exhaust back on I put the pod filter back on at the same time so could never compare the differences.

Rev's nice and free now, could be a little better with a better flowing cat though but thats another story.

Anyways, I will put the air box back on tonight with a new panel filter so see how that goes.

Hey Abu - I've been alright mate. Let us know how you find it with the stock airbox on without any modifications done to the box.

I guess it might not increase HP with a pod (i guess it also depends on what brand/type as there's some shoddy ones around), but for me it has definately felt more punchier, especially in the higher rpm range for some reason i have noticed (BTW, i'm still running stock boost with cat-back + FMIC).

Interesting none-the-less.

    • just an update to this, poor man pays twice  Tried sanding down the pulleys but it didnt do the trick. Chucked another second hand alternator in the na car which I got for free off my mate and its fixed the squelling. Must have been unlucky with the bearings.    As for my turbo car, I managed to pick up a cwc rb alternator conversion bracket + LS alternator for 250 off marketplace, looked to be in really good nick. Installed it , started the car and its not charging the battery.... ( Im not good with auto elec stuff so im not sure if this was all I needed to do but I verified such by using a multimeter on the battery when the engine was running and I was only getting 12.2v )   I had to modify the earth strap for the new LS alternator , factory earth strap was a 10mm bolt which did not fit the bolt on the LS alternator which was double the size so I cut it off , went to repco bought some ring terminals that fit, crimped it onto the old earth strap and bolted it up to the alternator , started the car and same issue. Ran like shit and was reading 12.2 at the battery.  For a "plug and play" advertised kit thats not very plug and play but alas.  My question is , am I missing something ? Ive been reading that some people recommend upgrading the stock 80 amp alternator fuse to a 140 amp but I dont see how that would stop the alternator charging especially at idle not under load.  Regardless ive pulled it out and am going to get it bench tested by an auto elec tomorrow but it would be handy to know if ive missed something silly or have done something wrong.   
    • My wild guess is that you have popped off an intake pipe....check all of the hoses between the turbo and the throttle for splits or loose clamps.

    • To provide more specific help, more information is needed. What Android screen? What is its wiring diagram? Does the car's wiring have power at any required BAT and ACC wires, and is the loom's earth good?
    • So, now all you need to do is connect the 2 or 3x 12v feeds into the unit to permanent 12v, ACC 12V and IGN 12V that you can find in the spot behind the stereo, and the earth, and then it will switch on with the car.
