looking at a 180 that ive found and they have upgraded the engine which was a non turbo sr20 to a rb20 from a r32.

Is the RB20 a better engine than the SR2 DET or would i be better of buying a 180 with a stock turbo engine already in it?

any help appreciated.

does it still have LSD like the factory turbo cars. It would have to be 94+ model eh? if its got lsd then id get it especially if it has the updated interior. If you wanna go all out on mods then the rb20 is a more solid platform. If youre gunna go smallish mods id probably just get one with an sr20det. Also check how big the brakes are, i'd definatly want some decent stoppers on a car like that. If theyre the same size as the sr20de sils id be budgeting in a brake upgrade.

in the end its up to you. i'd try and use the fact that it was once an n/a, and your going to have to spend more on this one to spec it up, than to buy a normal sr20det one

CS_180: All 180sx were turbo I believe, except some of the later (late96, 97+) models..

RB20DET and SR20DET are similar strength/outputwise, you wouldn't replace one with another (:P)

Just consider that it will likely need as Gary said, brakes, diff, (maybe gearbox) and engineering!

Saying the SR cant handle the mods like an RB20 is a fairly broad statement which really doesnt hold any weight. The SR is just as good as the RB20 if not better, when theres Perth workshops turning out 700hp SR20 monsters then it makes you realise how good they are for a 2 litre, 4 cylinder.

And as meggala shows, putting one in a skyline results in enough engine bay room to mount an intercooler flat in front of the motor, which alot of jap guys have done in R32's. The SR is ALOT lighter than the RB20 (alloy vs iron), that picture alone should demonstrate that.

    • It's funny, as Ive seen plenty of people use them in cheap builds on YT. And they actually go okay, even though a lot of other maxspeedingrods stuff is terrible. Those turbos seem reliable enough, the only part being, a good quality turbo that is "identical" to it, will out perform it day in and day out. In both a lower boost threshold, and the ability to flow more air at the same boost pressure. As a cheap cheap replacement, not a terrible choice. For cheap and shouldn't blow in a day, not terrible (like other eBay/Temu turbos) for low cost and still decent performance, that's where the question comes in to play from the results I've seen. I'd actually find it hilarious to buy one, and strap it to a paddock basher or some other cheap as POS originally NA car, and send it to the moon!
    • The maxpeedingrods turbo is cheap and bolts on to stock parts. I think you just need a bigger silicone coupler for the intake. Its a cheap china turbo, but it's been running on mine for almost 3 years at 16-19 psi.
    • What do they look like right after you've tried to start it with everything connected? Also post photos of what they actually look like.
    • Also wanted to say, my new spark plugs are blackened looks like it's very rich. I have splitfire coilpacks but stock coilpack loom and ignitor. I tried directly grounding the ignitor ground to body as well.
