Hi guys,

I did have a search but couldn't find a simple answer.

My right side headlight has gone out on my 1999 R34. It works when on high beam, but doesn't in 'normal mode'.

It's got the Xenon headlights, factory standard AFAIK. Should I be able to drive down to a Repco/Autobarn/Super Cheap and change this thing myself? Do I need to check the globe to see what model number it is? I've read something about H3 and H4.

Regards,

David.

I just called a local Melbourne workshop and they quoted $120 to supply and install that bulb. Will take a few days to order in.

Those PHILIPS CRYSTAL VISION HALOGEN BULB's on ebay are $80 a pair - http://cgi.ebay.com.au/PHILIPS-HALOGEN-Car...Z1QQcmdViewItem

It says 'Directly interchangeable with originally equipped products! Easy install by self, good for DIY!'

Anyone have any experience with these? Are they easy to install? Any threads show the headlight bulb removal process?

OK, so I went and checked out my headlights.

Above the drivers side headlight assembly there are a series of model numbers.

From right to left

D2R 35W (factory printed on)

H1 12v 55w (engraved on, presumably during compliance)

H1R1 12v 65w (factory printed on)

Is the 'H1 12v 55w' a replacement of the factory 'H1R1 12v 65w' for compliance?

It sounds like it's the D2R 35W that I need to change (Xenon low beam).

Do I have this correct? Is $120 a reasonable price for this? The only new one I could find on eBay was $90US + $25US shipping, so it seems reasonable as long as it's a good brand one (Philips or Osram).

I also unscrewed the large 3" circular cap that covers the rear of the bulb. Certainly doesn't look like the bulb simply twists out, looks like you need to undo a couple of screws first, but what do I know...

OK guys, for the benefit of the board...

I went to my mechanic who explained to me they removed the Xenon lights during compliance and replaced them with standard halogen H1 globes (hence the engraving). So my car has H1 low beam and H1 high beam which I'd imagine most R34's would have.

A basic one of these costs $8 from Repco. If I want to go Narva Arctic Blue (i.e. a whiter light), it's $45 a pair or $25 each. Repco Oakleigh only sell Narva and don't stock Philips/Osram.

A search around the forum told me that Narva ones are hit and miss and I should really go Philips. Philips Vision Plus (+50%) are $30 + $8 post on eBay for what looks to be a Chinese or Jap market product but claims to be the genuine article.

I'd rather just go to an Autobarn to Supercheap and pick one up at lunch, even if it costs an extra $10-$20, but there aren't any in my area.

Changing them is pretty easy. Unscrew the rear cap, press together the two metal prongs holding in the lamp, unplug and replug. Ensure not to touch the globe otherwise the oily fingerprint will burn onto the globe.

mate just wanted to pass on my thanks for all your posts - i've had the exact same issue for the last few weeks and had been putting off sorting it out. after reading through everything here i went out - bought a replacement at $18 from repco on sale... and installed in about 5 minutes. too easy... i'd read another post about using Meguires Plastic Polish (for motorcycles) and just finished cleaning up all the yellow sh*t off my lights... saturday very well spent.

thanks again

    • 21 is explicitly the coils detected as the issue. Is it guaranteed the actual issue? No. Just the ECU thinks it is. When you say rattling, describe it better, get an audio clip as best you can if possible.
    • Yea got me coppers. Bad news is I just put them in and the car still has the light and shakes. I also noticed I hear like rattling coming from the exhaust piping right under me. Does 21 also have a possibility of being O2 sensors?   So, coil packs are good, the harness is good, the MAF is working, and obviously the spark plugs just replaced and working.
    • Make sure you drop the GTT base tune back in, and set your injectors again, this will remove anything playing up with it you may have removed. Possibly lean there as it's normally a fast transient going THROUGH atmospheric pressure, and a turbo motor would then quickly go richer as boost builds. The only worry you MIGHT have is ignition timing, as the DE is higher compression than the DET from memory. But again, you're not in boost, so the DE motor will be a lot more forgiving at atmospheric.   Get Murray, Kinkstahs, and Johnny's input on tuning haltechs, those guys have played with tuning enough in the past to be able to help now you're past the trouble shooting stage of the MAP issue
    • @Rusty NutshI mate. Do you have a pinout diagram for the na neo auto ecu?
    • Yeah thats the plan now. 🤞
