Ok so i am definatelly going to be transplating an RB of some sort into my MR30 skyline.

question is which one?

and RB20DET is around $2100 for engine/gbox/loom/ecu

as opposed to an RB25DET at more like $4500 for the same

have your say on why i should should not go with either one of these

I say go the RB25... I love the mid-eighties Skylines, and to see a modded RB25 in an MR30 would be the dogs bollox... I guess I say that coz the RB20 was introduced in the R31, the R30`s replacement. But to have an engine from 2 generations up, would be the best old/new mix IMO. More power and a newer(ish) engine than the RB20 goes without saying.

cool thanks keep them comming, i really want to knowwhat ppl rate the engine as. i would only be looking at the ECCS R32 RB20 if i was to get one of these.

the car will also be changing, get rid of the pimp chromey, run some gold P1s and a front bar that i am hoping is getting made right about now

show your thoughts

yeh but why is the box so much more expensive than the R32 box like $1000 more ($250 as opposed to $1250)

ive got some import DR30 taillights on the way and a JSS front bar comming eventually

RB25... i personally didn't like the RB20 a great deal.

and my gearbox is going along quite fine with over 200rwkw... Nothing wrong with it yet lol

I'm not sure if it's a 20 or 25 box, but it's lasting good.

touch wood.

where ya getting a 25 from?

(mine might be for sale for the right price...)

Hmm, in an MR30 I'd be inclined to fit an SR20DET myself. But of the RB25/RB20, I dunno, if you bought the rb20 you'd have more money left to mod it, if you got the RB25 you'd have a slightly better base to begin with.

Too close to call. The RB20DET is more bang for your buck, but the RB2DET is definitely a superior engine.

cheers,

floody

Dude i thought about the SR then went nahh alot of work. Doh! just realised that instead of using the Skyline crossmember us a pintara crossmember... piece of piss!

why didn't i think of that!

i can get heaps more stuff for SRs and the like

can i change the poll to include an SR?

    • Bit of a pity we don't have good images of the back/front of the PCB ~ that said, I found a YT vid of a teardown to replace dicky clock switches, and got enough of a glimpse to realize this PCB is the front-end to a connected to what I'll call PCBA, and as such this is all digital on this PCB..ergo, battery voltage probably doesn't make an appearance here ; that is, I'd expect them to do something on PCBA wrt power conditioning for the adjustment/display/switch PCB.... ....given what's transpired..ie; some permutation of 12vdc on a 5vdc with or without correct polarity...would explain why the zener said "no" and exploded. The transistor Q5 (M33) is likely to be a digital switching transistor...that is, package has builtin bias resistors to ensure it saturates as soon as base threshold voltage is reached (minimal rise/fall time)....and wrt the question 'what else could've fried?' ....well, I know there's an MCU on this board (display, I/O at a guess), and you hope they isolated it from this scenario...I got my crayons out, it looks a bit like this...   ...not a lot to see, or rather, everything you'd like to see disappears down a via to the other side...base drive for the transistor comes from somewhere else, what this transistor is switching is somewhere else...but the zener circuit is exclusive to all this ~ it's providing a set voltage (current limited by the 1K3 resistor R19)...and disappears somewhere else down the via I marked V out ; if the errant voltage 'jumped' the diode in the millisecond before it exploded, whatever that V out via feeds may have seen a spike... ....I'll just imagine that Q5 was switched off at the time, thus no damage should've been done....but whatever that zener feeds has to be checked... • I think Fitmit had some, have a look on there (theyre Australian as well)
    • Hah, fair enough! But if you learn with this one you can drive any other OEM manual. No modern luxury features like auto rev-matching or hillstart assist to give you a false sense of confidence. And a heavy car with not that much torque so it stalls easily.
    • Actually, I'd say all three are the automatic option. Just the different trim levels. The manual would be RSFS, no?
