Ok, Please don't flame me for this but I'm curious about the RD laws in Victoria, as I know they range from state to state (you lucky WA bastards!) I've been having trouble finding what are the exact laws in VIC are I know they are COMPLETELY banned and cops operate your version of the Stelcar RDD's but what is the penalty exactly? I've read that Australia's maximum penalty is $1200 9 demerits and destruction of RD in question. But i didn't find what state that was from. Just to be clear this is just to satisfy my own curiosity in RD's I am not planning to use one, operate one, or purchase one in the foreseeable future, due to the fact that the only what which would be logical to buy in VIC would be the Bel STI and right now $700 can go to more important things...like food. I know K and Ka bands are operated Australia wide but is POP and Instant on also operated? You might be wondering why i'm asking all these questions if I REALLY don't intend to use one, well I get side tracked really easily when I'm interested in something and I cant do anything else (more importantly concentrate on my work) and RD's was a really be hobby of my in the US and I've been researching how/what/where it's used in AUS and these are just some pieces of information I couldn't find myself

Also if you have ad personal experience with use of an RD in VIC please post your comments and opinions

Thanks in advance

James

....Actually....that's prob a good idea, I know you were prob being sarcastic, but i mean I cant get arrested for inquiring right? Haha thanks Ash, gonna go do that now...at least they are open on sundays

I believe I had read they are illegal and I found this:

Victoria

VICTORIA - (Road Safety Act 1986) 74. (1) A person must not own, sell, use or possess a device the sole or principal purpose of which is to prevent the effective use of a prescribed speed measuring device or to detect when a prescribed speed measuring device is being used.

According to: http://www.radarlaser.com.au/lawsrdau.htm

I would cross-reference it though to confirm its correct.

Thanks Gareth, I knew that I just couldn't find the exact penalty if you are caught operating one

Hmm, I thought I read something huge like 5K somewhere on a website but I can't find it again, but it probably wasn't the radar detector as 5K is really damn high.

You do know a large section of Vic police have had laser versions for a long time right ? :P

Good luck finding the info

    • Possibly avoid using a Cometic one unless the deck/head surface are perfectly flat. I did have a look just then and forgiving gaskets such as Tomei or Nitto don't exist for the FJ20, however the Bar-Tek or Kameari ones look good and might do the trick.
    • Because pipe threads for pipe things. M threads for bolt things. Throw some teflon sealant onto it and dust your hands off knowing you did the right thing, instead of going twice around the block to achieve a result using the wrong things. Of course, all of these solutions are ignoring the fact that the minimum thread pitch we're talking about here is 1.25mm, with the 1/4" in NPT or BPS being out around 1.4mm. You will need to know that the boss you're tapping has enough thickness for at least a few threads. That's one of the reasons that 1/8" is commonly used - because the pitch is <1mm. And why would you look to use 1/4" NPT in a BSP country anyway? Ugh.
    • Just throwing around ideas, does it need to be in the compressor cover? Why not the hot side piping?
    • 1/8NPT drill size = 8.7mm. Since the hole got messed up by me, it’s probably around 9mm.    So 1/4” NPT would be next step. A drill size of around 11mm would be preferred there which is not way of my M12 (drill 10.5mm and tap M12 threads)
