well im looking at buying a silvia, most of the nice ones are running external gates.

is there any point hiding them? abviously the coppa will know you got 1 just from the sound but if he cant see it and its hidden by bolted down panels and stuff can he still get you for it?

how bad are the fines? i heard its classified as having no cat, so it can be a fine of like 10grand. and if you got 1, wat can u do to pass it over the pits, change the whole exhaust manifold and turbo? then u wud need a new tune and end up costing an arm and a leg.

and if u get caught with 1, do u get the fine on the spot or do they give u a few weeks to get rid of it and take it over the pits?

so wat i dont get it why so many street cars are running external gates risking like a 10grand fine... i must be missing something here

I dont live in WA so I dont know the exact laws but if the External Gate is engineered, plumbed back into the exhaust BEFORE the cat then I think it would be legal. If it is plumbed into exhaust after the cat or it just vents to the atmosphere (Screamer pipe) then it is illegal.

Who ever told you that is talking shit. External wastegates are the same as internal wastegates, only not part of the turbo. As long as it is plumbed back into the exhaust before the cat the exhaust gasses still pass through, therefore no extra emmisions are released.

A screamer pipe (vent to atmosphere) is illegal for 2 reasons. 1: Extra emmisions. 2: Noise. Sounds great though :D

They can yellow you for it, but I doubt they're fine you for it. I know plenty of people who have been stickered for having no cats, decat pipes, some have even gone over the pits like that. They fail, but it just means they dont get rid of the sitcker.

open gates are definitely illegal but those that are plumbed back before the cat are legal. cops will still sticker you for weird reasons but if you bring it to the pits they will pass. is there something about noise levels as well? some say that it cant be too loud.

There is a law saying it cant be too loud, however SN1P3R's car passed the pits 3 times with her exhaust before she got stickered for it being too loud. My exhaust has no turbo, cat, or any real muffler, and the resonator and cannon do sweet f**k all to muffle the sound. Therefore, you can hear it 3 streets away at high RPM. I am yet to be stickered for my OBVIOUSLY illegal exhaust.

dunno if its a good idea advertising how illegal your car is :spank:

as far as i know, they are not illegal as long as they are plumbed back.

Don't worry, I knew the risk I was taking when I wrote that. Simple cat swap and silencer and it's legal again.

ossie 21 has an engineered external gate

so they are legal if they dont vent to atmosphere

afaik they only do emissions testing over east, thats why people often pass the pits with gutted cats etc

They do emissions testing over here now, I had to get that done for my car. Apparently I got in just in time because they were looking at making people do something called the IM240 test (i think thats what its called), which only 1 place in Perth can do, and the cost was in the region of a grand :) BUT...since then I haven't heard much about that happening to people so I'm not sure if that's what people are having to do or just if the DPI were looking into it, I just did the test that is done for compliance to the australian design rule (39 I think it refers to) :)

external gates are legal if plumbed back before cat

however if its not and you have a after market comp you can set your comp to rev limit at 4k and loosen off a cooler pipe clamp so u got boost leak and say to the pits inspector its on run in tune due to being a fresh engine. The wastegate wouldnt open due to not reaching the boost limit hence you would be able to take the gate off and block the gate flange so they dont know you have one which would be legal..... or

just plumb it back, but that costs u money rather than 10mins of buggering around to trick them hahahaaa

By telling them you have an aftermarket comp you are screwing yourself over with them :) That won't work, you just have to have it plumbed back.

don tell em bout the aftermarket comp just a limiter on the coil leads or summin hahaaa they don no much theyre all generally old and carby experts hahaa

but yeah i agree just plumb it back if u get stickered but till then it sounds good loud :(

When my S13 was stickered I was caught going over the pits in the middle of their pay dispute. As a silent protest to DPI pit inspectors were sending all modified cars out with "Seek technical section approval" noted on all work orders.

I had to fill out a comprehensive application to the DPI Tech Section at Welshpool requesting approval for my high mount, gate, bigger brakes, exhaust etc etc. It was time consuming and agonising but at the end of the day I got approval for everything and not only did I get permits but I also had a full history outlining that my car was 100% legal.

If your going for a car that has an external gate why not look into requesting approval from DPI before waiting for a yellow sticker. At least if your pulled over in the mean time you can show the jellyback that your making an effort.

I'm planning to do that with my R34 now it's externally gated.

    • Thanks Mate, I did know you could do that but i know there is a pump out there that you can bolt on and it all lines up. I was told about it and then forgot the model, I figure if i am pulling it apart i will just put a new one on
    • You can also remove the veins from the HICAS portion of your existing pump.
    • Trying to swap the rear subframe on my R34 and can't remove the L-shaped stay brackets between the front subframe mounts and the sill/chassis. I'm in the UK so rust is a problem. I've used loads of WD40 and then Tunap 103 for days beforehand. I backed off the bolts forward a bit, backward a bit repeatedly for ages to try and avoid snapping. They have all moved a few full turns. The one I've spent most time on has come loose and I can turn with fingers, and it will pull down and push up 2-3mm. But it won't come out. I can tighten it back up and loosen it off again repeatedly but it still won't come out. I assumed there's a captive nut inside but if that's broken loose then I can't understand why I can always tighten the bolt back up - I'd expect it to just spin both ways. Any ideas what's happening here? I can't visualise what's inside there to cause this.
