Hey i just test drived an n/a skyline, and it has a 2.5 cannon muffler (not straight through) and it was really loud. liek my ear was going funny, is it common, uncommon, or a fault, also, if i were to buy it, wat muffler would i buy to quiet it down a tad,

is it common for rb's to be that loud?

Thanks Nick

Hey mate, Yeah depending on what style of cannon it is it can make things quite lould.. I had a seca corolla with a 2.5" cat back system and a cannon from REPCO and it was rated at 146db at 5-6000rpm.. was reduculious lol so got it taken off in the end..

and so what i reccomend if it dosnt have a aftermarket exhaust just replace to a stock barrel and tip again put on..

If it is an aftermark one just replace the cannon part if u do buy the car..

Hey man did you happen to notice what brand exhaust it was?

Did it have a silencer put in?

If you know what brand it is you might be able to get a silencer from the company, my exhaust a kakimoto racing one has a silencer available.

if not you can always go to a few exhasut shops, they can probably set you up with one..

Thats if you didnt want to go through the new exhaust hassle

My exhaust without the silencer is insanely loud, the ppl at woolongong hated me on the cruise yesterday

p.s. N/A skylines are always louder, turbos seem to quiet them down a bit

nah, didnt catch it, i guess its somthing i should have been asking, lol. so you rekon i can pic up a silencer, man it was so loud... my old mans like you would get so annoyed at it after an hour, but yeh, i guess i can just replace the muffler later on if theres no silencer  . Thanks mate

yea the turbine in a turbo muffles the exhaust and makes it a tad quieter.

you can always get a center muffler or a new one welded on for like $200 and it'll be a lot quieter

ive got a standard exhaust with hot dog on my car ending in a DRIFT brand cannon and its pretty quiet most of the time.

Cool thanks dan, so many ways to quiet it down

Nick

the ones you see on cannons just makes the outlet hole a lot smaller so it restricts the exhaust flow a bit to make it quieter. my cannon came with one but it looks pretty gay when its on lol.

Hmm, well the 33 i looked at was pretty much undrivable my ear went distorted lol, i just want a nice purrr, :D

Before you do go out and buy anything have a look and see if all sections of the exhaust are boltd up tightly with good gaskets, some places may need goo, new gaskets or several gaskets.

Will, do....but an easy fix if that seems to be the problem?

  • 1 month later...
i have the same problem

bought a r34 n/a

its a 3inch kakimoto...

:ermm: what are the best ways of reducing the sound

A 3" on an na is way over exhausted. 3" is best suited for a turbo, most likely your exhaust is for a turbo and was brought of ebay or something.

your best bet is to change it to a 2 1/2" (understandably its not the cheapest option) ether that or do to your local exhaust place and get another muffler put in.

another note, im fairly sure you dont have to get the same brand name silencer so long as you get the right size for your tip (i have seen them for sale at autobarn) then you just have to knock it in and drill a small hole in the very end of you cannon and wack a nut and botl through to hold it in. (dont asume just because its a tight fit it will stay in without a bolt, it will fall out one day)

panda.

  • 4 weeks later...

ive always had 3inch systems on my falcons, and wen i asked about one for my n/a R33, the exhaust guy refussed to do it. he sed that is the biggest over kill to a non turbo 2.5.

2 1/2 inch is ideal for 2.5 DE's. im getttin mine on tomorrow along with turbo tec trackies and a "metal cat". and no cannon, tryin to be different.

ur cannon may have also had baffles taken out for a louder tone, all my mates do it to their exhausts, its shockin

    • What copper washer do you guys use on the bleeder bolts? The existing one I have I had no idea where to find it in a local store, I did buy some online but that are only 1mm thick whereas my old one is 2mm+ thick and when I put the new washer out and squeeze the top radiator hose I can hear a bit of air but not with the old one. Does this matter? The new one doesn't leak, but the inner diameter is a bit loose whereas the old one threads on the bolt.
    • Howdy all, after being out a few weeks ago on a spirited drive in my GTR I have 2 issues that oddly have appeared at the same time. Whilst accelerating quickly through the gears all of a sudden i’ve lost power at the top of third gear (below redline around 6000rpm) for no obvious reason.    From that point onwards the car has been running rich on idle, won’t really rev under load without a ton of black smoke and the odd backfire, and dying as a pull up to a set of lights unless I keep the revs up around 1500rpm. In addition when shutting down the car that same night (I was 10 minutes from home) I noticed one of the turbos was significantly noisy on wind down when shutting off the engine. After letting the car cool down overnight it starts up fine, although once it gets to temp the revs start to creep up and down, the exhaust is darker than it should be and it also sounds like it’s running rich (fat note) I’ve put a new set of plugs in it - no change, the old plugs all seemed OK with two of them being somewhat richer/fueled up than the other 3 with 1 being borderline. I’ve smoked tested the intake system via the front of the Turbos, found a split vacuum hose going to the factory boost gauge sender, which I have since replaced.  Also found another leak on the gasket coming off the rear turbo outlet, have also replaced this. After fixing both of these leaks - still have the running rich issue. I’ve also tried another pair of AFM’s - no change here After pulling off the front turbo intake pipes, there is obvious shaft play in the front turbo, which now hisses loudly on light revvs although I can’t see why this would make the car run funny even under idle. I’m curious to know why it’s running rich before I potentially replace/rebuild turbos. The car is completely stock <50,000kms  other than an exhaust. Oil and coolant are all clear. I haven’t bothered with coil packs as it looks like they won’t be the issue due to condition of the plugs. Any help appreciated as I cry myself to sleep!
    • No probs at all. I used to love trying to dig up obscure info for those in need where possible going back 20+ years on SAU.  I did have another look and couldn't come up with any closer match. I'm leaning towards those skirts in your first pic are custom fitments, cut down/extended or from another car entirely and modded to fit an R34 sedan. I would've thought someone in Japan had them and taken a photo at some stage over the last 2 decades but there's nothing. Someone out there must know surely.
    • Welcome mate. Any pics? Even with a DE I'd be well happy if I had that as a 1st car.
