Hi there,

Was removing my radiator today when i noticed from under the car that the clutch fan has a crack in it, on the part that sits around bearing on the motor. See pic:

As you can see, the crack is about 1 cm in size.

Obviously the smart thing to do would be to replace it, but i'm curious if anybody's had a similar issue or a fan fail on them due to cracking.

Also, if anybody's got a spare one lying around that would be great.

Thanks

just put a bigish thermo on it with a proper shroud.

electric fans get a lot of bad rep but personally i reckon most of this is due the people running them unshrouded and not big enough fans.

for instance i've been looking at fans for my hilux. the one on it was a 16 inch flowing 1000cfm (i think) yet 2x 10inch fans wouldn't flow even close to that.

kinda the same argument such as a single 4 inch pipe will flow more than 2x 2inch pipes by a significant amount, but i get the shits arguing with people about this.

On my r33 i found a crack about the same size as yours. Went for drive that night to get something and the fan split and went into the radiator.

So instead of just having to buy a new clutch fan i also had to buy a new radiator.

Get it replaced as soon as you can as you never know when they will fail.

Where abouts did you get a new one from? I had to trim the blades on the stock one for the intercooler pipe so wouldnt mind buying an aftermarket one that fits on without needing to be trimmed.

Anybody with a Hybrid FMIC know of an aftermarket brand that doesnt require trimming of the blades?

they fatigue after a while.

almost all r31 and vl have this fault as well that i have seen.

i would just double check that the viscous fan centre is working properly, not locked up all the time as this will put extra load onto the blades.

A 16inch SPAL fan from PWR will flow 3000cfm. I don't know of any that flow higher but they are good value if you are having cooling issues and they can't be fixed by the normal maintenance procedures.

    • The wideband reading is meaningless if it's not running. Why are you using shitty old sidefeeds on any engine, let alone a Neo? What manifold and fuel rail are you using to achieve that? Beyond that, can't help you with AEM stuff as I've never been their ECU/CAS combo.
    • Manual boost controllers (where a little of the boost was bled off) were quite common back in the day, because they were cheap and easy. Generally they had a manual adjustment screw rather than being fixed like yours. Down side is they always bleed boost, not just when you want them to so an electronic boost controller that uses a solenoid will have less lag.
    • Hello , im new here and i have A31 home build  RB25det neo stock eng / turbo  aem ems 2 blue connector  aem 3.5 map aem cas disk aem wideband connected to ecu  355 lph pump 550 nismo yellow injectors side feed aftermarket regulator  and won’t start with base aem tuner basic tune eventually flipped cas 180 degree so it triggers on correct stroke not in exhaust cycle  Now it won’t start Wideband reads 10 and 11 at lowest fuel setting  and will share calibrations soon for aem tuner i think something is wrong in aem tuner    please if you have any information, am very grateful
    • Legend. I ended up finding the facebook account of the owner of the first car i sent but sadly he deactivated the account. I think you’re right in saying it’s some sort of well done custom job. Really appreciate your help anyways.
    • Totally equivalent. Stock often goes from the comp cover because that's where the actuator is also installed and the factory needs 2" of hose to make the connection - and it comes as a pre-assembled unit. They totally have a boost reference from somewhere between the turbo and the throttle(s). Oh, jeez. Just do it in M12 then. We don't actually care that much. I would expect any such AN converter fitting to rely on an o-ring or some other seal onto a flat surface under the flange of the hex**, because bolt threads are no intended to provide a pressure seal. unlike..... pipe threads. **which also requires a suitably flat and smooth surface on the turbo's boss to provide the seal.
