hey guys,

I think its the time to change my clutch and never thought that it could be this expensive!! but anyways i dont have much mechanical knowledge and i thought i would get it done from a mechanic. this is the job list that they gave me;

"We will remove the gearbox and replace the Clutch Kit and at the same time inspect and report on the condition of,

  • Flywheel Condition
  • Spigot Bearing
  • Drive Shaster and Slave Cylinder
  • Clutch Folk
  • Gearbox
  • afts and CV or Universal Joints
  • Clutch Cable if applicable
  • Clutch M
  • Oil
  • Gear Shifter & Linkages or cables
  • Engine and gearbox Mounts

the guy quoted me $1098 and he said it will bw a standard clutch. ive gotta sports clutch at the moment and if i decided to go for the standard one can i make it feel hard to feel like the current one? and what do you guys think about the price?

bear in mind that the pull release bearing is more than hunded dollars im pretty sure...

a workshop not wanting to make money.. wich there is none. will take:

remove box 45mins

r+r clutch kit 15mins

clean and install box 1 hour.

flywheel grind ~$70

there is no need to drain any oil. any confidant shop will block off the attessa hose. and worse case it 1 litre of auto fluid.

Actual time to put a clutch in 45 minutes with airtools including putting new clutch in and alinging it thats what time it took me and a mate to do it, he is a mad dog though yeah.

The crapiest part of the job is rotating the bellhousing of the box in etc also being at back of the box and letting it get lower then the front while holding it on a 4 post oh should say 45 mins and a t-shirt lmao.

to give you some idea mate i just put a carbon button clutch kit in my SII 33, the kit alone cost me just under 500 at trade price.

i did it after hours at work, first skyline box ive taken out. It took me an hour or so to get the box out, a further 10 minutes to get the pressure plate, clutch plate and fly wheel off. Being there is no spigott bearing, only a bush i didnt need to inspect it.

had the flywheel machined by AMMS in brisbane for i think $50.

refitted flywheel and new clutch kit and aligned clutch took about 20 mins.

refitted gear box.. well this took a little longer as the section in the bell housing where your starter bolts to hits the tunnel so you need to spin the box a bit. but still only took about another hour and half.

id also advise changing gearbox oil as they can commonly break the detents in the box and if this has happened can lead to more damage so by changing the oil you can check this as the drian plug is magnetic.

thats just an idea.. as for pricing id be thinking for standard clutch around 800ish. but if you have a h/duty clutch already i wouldnt advise going back to standard cause you will be disapointed.

Hmmm I'm getting my clutch done next week, with an Exedy OEM replacement (want something a little easier than whatever's in there at the moment, rock hard and all the way to the floor) which i've been told will be about 350-400 for the parts. Then about 200-300 labour on top.

I dunno, I'm pretty happy with that.

    • Oil change does not trigger code 21. Code 21 is for coilpacks primary side connection. You can try to clear the code with a battery disconnect, hold down the brake pedal to drain capacitors through the brake lights with the ignition on for 10-15 seconds before you reconnect the battery. I have seen R35 coil conversion permanently cause this code with no ill effects so it might be the resistance it wants to see isn't quite right on one or more coilpacks. Could be inside the ECU, could be the harness, could be a coil. You can test it all if you want or just ignore until the car actually starts misfiring.
    • I forgot you have a Nistune ECU. Use Nistune to do all the tests I mentioned instead of faffing with 30+ year old electrical connectors. You can read MAF volts off that too, there are reference values in the service manual to tell you roughly what it should be in different conditions.
    • No. I think it might be the AFM. Hence the use of the terms "swaptronics", which implies the use of swapping out electronics for the purpose of diagnosis. It's about the only way to prove that a small/niggling/whatever problem with an AFM or a CAS or similar is actually caused by that AFM/CAS/whatever. A known good item swapped in that still gives the same problem is likely to be caused somewhere else. They're all the same. Spraying AFMs with cleaner is an each way bet between cleaning it and f**king it.
    • Oh wow! This might actually work amazingly. Do you know the ratio of the diff? I was told the only thing you need to make sure of is if the front & rear diff ratios are the same. Ours is a 4.083 Thanks!
    • You think its the AFM? I know its a common issues on R32s. I find it coincidental how this issue raised right after cleaning the fuel system. As everything except the fuel system was fine before. I tried running it with the IACV unplugged but did not notice a difference and still stalled. However, the RPM gauge is not in the cluster right now, so I will need to connect the laptop again and use Nistune to check the RPM. I will check this weekend.
