Just wondering if anyone knows where in the engine bay of a R33 GTS-t I can find the power wire for the air con?

I need to tap the wire of the air con that has 12v only when the air conitioner is turned on.

There is a relay in the fuse box under the bonnet makes A/C, but it has constant power as soon as the ignition is turned on, and I need it only when the A/C is turned on.

I want to wire up the front fan so it turns on as soon as the A/C is turned on.

Thanks

J

there should be a plug that plugs on the compressor ( 2 pin i think ) u maybe able to see it from under the car or put u r hand from under the car and try to feel it . if i remember right its on top , if u take the airbox off u 'll see it i'm sure , if u cant find it let me know and i'll have a look in the gtr and post back .

how come u want the fan to go on when the air is on ? not necessary on the skyline cause u have a clutch fan , unlike front drives that have electric fans . isnt the air cond efficient ? or does the car overheat ?

Cool - thanks.

I had a quick look at a mates R32 GTR from under the car but couldn't see the plug, but I'll have a good look around mine on the weekend, and rip the air box out etc.

I got rid of the clutch fan, and now I'm running a DC16 incher that's thermo controlled by a temp probe in the radiator.

I've heard stories of the A/C over presurising when you ditch the clutch fan for a thermo controlled fan, hence why I want to do this mod.

So to stop the A/C over heating/pressurising I'll make the front fan come on whenever the A/C is turned on.

And with summer on the way I dare say that the A/C will get a good workout :D

Cheers

J

if u have a thermo electric fan its a must that the air cond fan goes on when u put the air on , cause the thermo fan only goes on when the engine gets hot and for a very short time .

Woohooo - I worked it out.

OK, forget about the relay under the bonnet that's marked A/C. It might be for the A/C, but it's not switched with the A/C !!

The wire that is switched when you turn JUST the A/C on and off is pin number 5 on the FICD relay under the bonnet.

I have no idea what FICD stands for though !!!

Just to confirm, pin 5 of the FICD relay is only turned on when you turn the A/C on. If you only have the heater on and manually turn off the A/C (by pressing the A/C button after you've pressed 'Auto'), then the pin is held low (no voltage on it).

But as soon as you hit that A/C button, and A/C lights up on your headunit, then pin number 5 on the FICD relay has 12 volts on it.

I hope that helps someone.

Yep.. It sure did.. I've got 2x DC12's on my 32.

What have you done about the coolant temp switch thing that is plugged in to the bottom of the radiator. This is origionally what used to control the on/off for the overheat fan that is in front of the condensor?

I am going to see if i can get a cooler temp switch that will then activate the thermo's through a set of 2 relays.

Currently the two thermo's are running off 1x30amp relay. The power wire from the battery gets warm and began melting the wire once. Hence the reason for 2x relays in the future.

G'day Joel - how you been?

Cool, yepp. What I've done is used a single poll double throw relay, so when the A/C is off the front fan operates as normal (eg. off of that temp sensor in the bottom of the radiator).

But once the A/C get's turned on, the fan is cut from the circuit (so the ECU doesn't get confused (not sure if it would though)) and power is applied to it to turn it on.

Hay I noticed the same thing with my DC fuse holder. It was getting warm and was starting to melt !!

Matt (whatisname) has had the same problem, as well as a mate of mine (I had to replace his last night !).

Do what I did, go down and get a good quality fuse holder that can take 40amps and uses 10ag wire. Then you shouldn't have any problems...

I had the DC16 incher I've got on the bench to see what sort of current it draws, and OMG !! On start up it peaks to around 31 amps !! then settles on about 19 amps once it's upto speed !!

Good idea about getting a lower temp sensor.

I was worried about the A/C over pressurising and doing some damage :D

J

I've got a wiring diagram for the R32 so I'll try to see what else that temp sensor switch is used for.. I.e if the ecu retards timing when it detects an overheat.

Yer my Fuse holder also melted. :)

I might have to see what two DC12 thermo's draw when starting up and once up to speed.

They do suck some air though as when I put my hand in front of the condensor i can feel the air being pulled through my fingers.

I might be poping up to Canberra over christmas.. Maybe.. If I do come over I'll have the RB30 in it by then.

Cool - yepp for sure. I'd be real keen to check out the conversion.

Drop me a PM if your gunna come over.

    • You just need to remove the compressor housing, not the entire turbo. I would not be drilling and tapping anything with the housing still on anyways.
    • So, I put my boat on a boat. First of all, I'm going to come out and say it. Why is Tasmania not considered a holy goal, an apex that all road-legal modified cars go to, to experience? This place is an absolute wonderland of titanic proportions. If people are already getting club runs for once in a lifetime 30 person cruises to Tassy then I've never seemed to see it. It is like someone replaced the entire place with an idyllic wonderland for cars, and all of the people living there with paid actors who are kind, humble, and friendly. Dear god. After doing a lap of almost all of the place I've found that it's a great way to find out all of the little things that the car isn't doing quite right and a great way to figure it all out. All in all, I drove for 4 hours a day for a week and nothing broke. I didn't even need to open the engine bay. This is by all means a great success, but it has left me with a list of things to potentially address. I also now have a 3D printed wheel fitment tool which annoyingly hasn't got any threads in it to actually assemble it. I might be able to tape it together to check the sizing I actually want to use, but it'll likely involving pulling the shocks out to properly measure travel at least at the front, and probably raise the car while I'm at it, at least in the rear. I scraped on quite a few things and I'm not sure how else to go about it. I was taking anything with a bump at what felt like 89 degree angles. And address those 10 other tasks. And wash the car. God damn it is dirty. And somehow, the weather was perfect the entire time - And because I was on the top of Mt Wellington it turns out it was very much about to freeze up there. I did something I typically never do and took some photos up there in what must have been -10 and the foggy felt like suspended ice, rather than mere fog. If you own a car in Australia, you owe it to yourself to do it.
    • Damn that was hilarious, and a bit embarrassing for skylines in general 😂 vintage car life ey. That R33 really stomped. Pretty entertaining stuff
    • Hi, I have a r32 gtr transmission. Does any of you guys have an idea how much power it will hold with the billet center plate and stock gearset? At what power level and use did yours brake with or without billet plate? Thanks, Oystein Lovik
    • Saw this replica police car based on a Mitsubishi Starion XX parked next to a 'police box' (it's literally a box) in Hirohata, Himeji City in Hyogo prefecture the other day. It's owned by Morii-san who is a local Mitsubishi Starion enthusiast. According to a local radio station blog post, he always wanted to make a police car himself based on ones he saw in his favourite Manga comics.  As it's illegal to modify a car to look like a police car and drive on the road, Morii-san tried many times to get permission from Aboshi police station headquarters nearby. They refused initially by after they got tired of that they granted him permission. However, the car can only be displayed on private property and obviously can't be registered as long as the police livery is present. The car was completed at a cost of 1.5 million yen (US$ 10,000) in addition to the car cost. A location was chosen outside Hirohata Police box where the car can easily been seen from the street. Morii-san has two other Starion road cars, both widebody GSR-VRs.
