Adding A Carputer To My '03 350gt Prem... Want To Solve The Nav/movie/music/internet Problem Once And For All!

Hi all, I've been reading through the forum but haven't seen much on the following mods. Anyone have any info on the plausibility of these mods:

I have a '03 350GT V35 Prem with bose stereo.

I want to install a computer (running windows) in the boot and run the video inputs into the in dash screen and running the audio into the Bose stereo. Here's what I'm planning to do.

1) I want to replace the OE screen with a touch screen to better interface with the computer, while maintaining the ability to hide away the screen in the dash when not using it. (Therefore must be the same size as the OE screen)

2) Run an IPod USB cable from the carputer to a docking station modified from the ashtray in the centre console.

3) Keep the OE computer connected to the new touch screen and still controlled by the OE buttons (I can read Japanese so I still want to see things like fuel consumption amount, trip counter etc.) I figure I could switch between input devices.

I figure this way I'll have full audio and video (dixv, xvid etc) capability through the in dash screen and has full Nav using the carputer's GPS card and off the shelf software. (Australian maps can be downloaded too) Then I can tether my Ipone via the USB dock and have internet access also.

Here are my questions:

1) Are there any touch screen's out there that 1) fit in place of the OE screen and 2) have the correct inputs to connect all the necessary connections etc.?

2) What sort of connectors do I need to connect my computer to the Bose stereo as an audio input source?

Any help would be appreciated.

he's done something there perhaps he can expand to the rest of what u want.

i'm not sure about programming oem buttons - you'd better off chuck them in a bin!

have a read of this brainstorm... kind of gives something much similar to what you're doing but a lot less fiddly and ... to be honest what you're doing sounds VERY risky..

Risky? no.. Rediculous... yes!

Kesium and I have brainstormed this for at least several seconds and have come up with no potential problems

The only tricky part to this (maybe it's not tricky.. i dunno) is figuring out what touchscreen to use, and how to connect the existing hardware to it... does anyone know how the dvd-rom etc is connected to the screen??

The car-puter touch screen solution with custom front end is by far the best way to go about things.

Positives

HDD for music/movies etc

Internet

Nav - usb/bluetooth gps reciever and whatever nav software you want (plus you don't need to use the gay remote like the garmin)

OBDII interface gives you all the info on what your engine is up to and can be displayed however you want it

TV via pci tv capture card

Negatives

nothing

As you can see, my logic and research is sound

All jokes aside, as long as we can replace the oem screen and connect audio to the bose system... this is a piece of piss.

Down the track, you could pull apart the redundant oem buttons and do some frankenstein magic to connect them to the guts of a keyboard to allow the oem controlls to control the front end. That may sound tricky but it isn't.

I've installed carputers to a few cars now and they are awesome, affordable, awesome, upgradable and awesome.

Thanks guys for the links, interesting. Only thing it seems as these other guy's aren’t leaving the OEM software and OEM computer connected (i.e. the DVD-ROM box). I want to keep these features, just in putting them into the new touch screen under a different source. (Therefore keeping the need for the OEM NAV buttons).

If anyone's got diagrams of the electrical system on the v35 especially as it pertains to connecting the audio to the BOSE and how the OE DVD-ROM box connects to the OEM screen, it'd be much appreciated! :banana:

I like the idea of connecting the immobilizer to my car-puter and uploading GPS co-ordinates. Sorta like a home version of the low jack. But since I plan on using my iphone for the I-net connection this probably isn't useful. Well unless both my car and iphone are stolen. Then that's just a bad day for everybody.

nah the reason i say it's risky is cos v35 seems to have it's cpu and brains in those screens

it's not really something me, an amatuer, would really want to touch too much

Seriously guys,

The car pc is the way to go.

It offers a far cheaper alternative to modifying the existing stuff.

No translations disks (which are still apparently coming)

No expensive GPS mods

No band expanders

No replacement tv tuners

why not just ditch the existing system (apart from the volume knob)

there is nothing (as far as I can tell) that the standard set up can do that a carputer can't do.

A carputer will cost about $800

the screen about $400

GPS reciever about $80

OBD-II about $150

tv/radio tuner pci card about $50

Software... that's up to you! (read "eval" copies)

Obviously there will be more costs involved for installation etc but i think it's clear that we should concentrate our efforts on coming up with a solid plan for integrating a new system instead of trying to make the existing one work

Did a little digging on the interface side of things. Maybe instead of an after market touch screen which invites a whole range of combatility issues, I keep the OE screen and just input the car-puter into the exsisting display and stereo and use an airmouse for the interface. I'm looking at this product "http://www.mobileairmouse.com/". (The demo looks awesome.)

Airmouse basically turns my iphone into a wireless air mouse and keyboard. I could mount this just below the OE screen and used as a touch pad, or it can be used by holding it in my hand and using my iphone as a wand, offering the best of both worlds. This basically comes down to if it is possible to connect the car-puter to the bose stereo and the OE screen or not. hmmmm...

LOL - with carputer installed in your car, with wireless broadband a bit torrent client installed, you can d/l any 'fast forward' scenes as you want while cruising 4 hours to GOR... :ph34r:

      Wanted to buy R200 longnose LSD 3.9 ratio

      Hi all,  I am in the market for an R200 longnose diff out of a Z31 300ZX, or S12 RSX, DR30 skyline, or similar, in a 3.9 ratio.  Preferably a late model one with the M12 crownwheel bolts.  The only easy to find advert for one of these was my ad back in 2007 when I sold it on this forum.  I sold the diff as I had sold the car it goes to, but as it turns out, after 18 years I got the car back late last year, so now I'm looking for the diff !  If anyone knows where to find a longnose R200 LSD with the M12 crownwheel bolts, drop me a line at [email protected] - Bonus paid if soomeone comes up with the original diff (stranger things have happened !).  Cheers   Ben D

      Hi everyone, I used to post here a bit from 2004-2013, when I owned various Nissans, in particular my S12 RSX gazelle, which was sold in 2007.  As luck would have it, after an 18 year hiatus, the car found its way back to me last year, and over the past 11 months I have had the pleasure of restoring it with my kids.  One thing that I am after in particular is a 3.9 ratio R200 LSD for it.  I actually sold the one out of the car here back in 2007 , and it would be incredible if I could track down who I sold it to, so I can see how they have progressed over the years (and to be honest, to see whether I can get the diff back !).  Anyways, hi all and let me know "where are the R200 Longnose diffs all at these days ?  Cheers Ben D

      Arms will be the same as the G35 or 350Z, but as above, there was a change in the lower control arm where it connects to the ball joint.  That said, you can remove the ball joint cone from your old ball joints and fit them to the new ball joints.  To be honest, I didn't think the ball joints themselves were different. The main ball joint is a bit awkward to replace, you really need to remove the steering knuckle to press out the old one.  Some people have used tools to remove it in place, but it just seemed too hard to get to. If you are going to press out/in that ball joint, then you may as well just replace the bushings in the LCA and the compression rod.  You can buy the compression rod bushing from Nissan, but the LCA bushes, you will need to go aftermarket. Much cheaper than buying the whole arm.

      Ha, well, it's been.... a bit of a journey. Things have taken much longer than I'd hoped. I'll probably put up a thread at some stage. Hopefully soon. The car's not done any kms since my update in June though, put it that way.

      Here's the chart for fuel pressure vs. current draw, assuming your base fuel pressure is 3 bar and you run like 0.5bar boost on WOT, you should only momentarily hit 9amps here and there. (Ignore my prev post, I cannot read a chart these days it seems)
