gday guys, good topic, im also curious about a few things myself if i may...

how do you get the permits?

do you get them the same place as where you go for the pits inspection?

i thought to get rid of a yellow you just go to your local approved mechanical workshop and get it checked and passed?

is side mounting you front number plate illegal? ill be dong this once my custom plates get here, woot! i think im asking for trouble with my new plate anyways though!!lol!

am i mad to book in to get my Skyline inspected over the pits to find out whats good and what isnt before the fuz get to me?

gees, sorry, so many questions, ive only just picked my 33 up so im just reading around trying to pick up info as i go, cheers!!

Gonz.

The permit is a waste of time, even if you have one. The filth will tell you that you've swapped the permitted item with a different illegal one, and there's nothing you can do about it. They get the final say and you get the shaft. It's happened to me.

The best thing to do is to build a good relationship with your inspector and try to see the same one every time if possible. That way, he can turn you around ASAP and with minimal fuss. The one I use knows me well.

I have permits and one of the items listed was an aftermarket bov (but I had put the stock one back on), when I got yellowed he tried to tell me the bov was too loud.. I attempted to explain it was the stock bov but because I had "changed" something he wrote up the work order as "emissions controls modified" what a cock.

But everytime you bring it down the pits (even if its the same pits)

you get which ever inspector is free

how do you get the same one?

After I got done for the first time before my mod permit, I told him after he wrapped it up that I hope I don't see him again. This was when he told me that he would and after a small discussion told me that the police have final say in any doubts about the legitimacy of the modification.

When I got done the second time, I pulled up just as the gates opened and walked into the office. He just walked in when I was waiting for someone to serve me, saw me, then said I told you so. He put his lunch box behind the counter, then came out and had a look at the defect notice.

I pulled into the inspection pit and he lifted the bonnet and told me that the BOV I got done for was the same one. He then had a quick look around the car then passed me with no need for any modification. After we got finished he asked me the circumstances leading up to the defect notice because the cop had put the sticker on an angle, and after I told him what happened he said that the cop was "an officious idiot".

I have been back to the same guy another 2 times making a total of four and each time since, no further mods have been applied. I only had a small issue with a very minor power steering leak the last time and he told me to sort it out when I get home, which I did.

One comment he made to me that made me realise the whole process is a joke is that the cops have no formal training in mechanics and some have only minor training in ADR's. Most of it is just guess work and plain arrogance.

Yes your mad to take it over the pits without being forced to. Let "the fuz" get to you first.

Side mounting your number plate is fine as long as its on the passenger side or in the middle, due to cameras not being able to see it on the drivers side.

Permits are gotten at the pits, might as well wait until a cop pings you then just go down to the pits with it and get the permits then.

hahaha, yeh i spose, with some of you saying that permits dont mean much then whats the point of spending the money on getting the permits then, what a crap system, im hoping that because im abit older than most of you here(no offence) i may be right if i get pulled over for a breatho or licence check!!

so the front number plate can be mounted on the side...sweet, my new slim plate will be going to the side then, i cant wait to get them, im not sure how long they will be as i forgot to ask, but hopfuly soon!!, its been 4 weeks already and i havnt heard anything!

gees, all sounds like hard work, in all my years driving modded cars ive only ever been done when i was in my early 20's, my last couple of utes have never been bothered so i hope my luck remains, cheers for the info!!

I'm 43 and I still get shafted. Mainly because I'll argue with them when they are blatantly wrong.

how do you guys go with the fitment of FMIC's in 33s. i had to trim some of my reo to make it fit before and now i have completely removed the section that the number plate bolts on too leaving only the top section of the reo. im guessing this is illegal but i cant see how they fit otherwise! im thinking about getting some black mesh for the front and making a aluminum cover across the radiator support panel to cover it up a bit.

Cutting into any structural part of the vehicle is illegal. You can't even cut the 6" holes in the rear parcel shelf to fit 6x9 speakers.

The only way around your dilemma legally is to fit an FMIC that is suited specifically to the 33, and to replace the reinforcement crash bar.

If your front bar completely hides the fact that the bar was cut, then don't stress until you've been done. Then it's something you'll need to address.

this is basically what ive done.

Looks like it should fool them, there looks to be no large gaps for them to peer from the front, but if you can see evidence of the cuts from inside the engine bay, address it.

cant even see the reo from inside the engine bay but if you put your hand behind the bumper you can feel the top part of the reo.

I'd say you should be good. Most cops don't like to get their hands dirty (makes their donuts taste bad). Give it a go and see how you go man.

oh! :P well there goes that theory then i guess, lol! all i can hope for is that my luck remains with me and i never get bothered like my previous cars, and if i ever get done ill deal with it then, no point in trying to be legal when suposedly they sticker you anyways even though you got permits.

You know what it means when they slap it on an angle, don't you?

yeah but the cops put it on the passenger side in the top corner and it can mean give this guy a hard time

but when the cops put in the middle of your windscreen the cop dont like u or your car

bonnet is legal allen 94 and below its fine as far as i know

As you know I've got one too and was told they're illegal due to water/oil line eruption event compromising the driver's view on the windscreen.

Couldn't give a toss either way, I'll still put it back on after a canary.

Anyway, doesn't the Evo X have a flat vented bonnet?

    • I got back to Japan in January and was keen to get back on track as quickly as possible. Europe is god-awful for track accessibility (by comparison), so I picked up a first-gen GT86 in December just to have something I could jump into right away. The Skyline came over in a container this time and landed in early January. It was a bit battered after Europe, though—I refused to do anything beyond essential upkeep while it was over there. The clutch master cylinder gave out, and so did the power steering. I didn’t even bother changing the oil; it was the same stuff that went in just before I left Japan the first time. Naughty. Power steering parts would’ve cost double with shipping and taxes, so knowing I’d be heading back to Japan, I just postponed it and powered through the arm workout. It took a solid three months to get the car back on the road. Registration was a nightmare this time around. There were a bunch of BS fees to navigate, and sourcing parts was a headache. I needed stock seats for shaken, mistakenly blew 34k JPY on some ENR34 seats—which, of course, didn’t fit—then ended up having the car’s technical sheet amended to register it as a two-seater with the Brides. Then there’s the GT86. Amazing car. Does everything I want it to do. Parts are cheap, easy to find, and I don’t care what anyone says—it’s super rewarding to drive. I’ve done a few basic mods: diff ratio, coilovers, discs, pads, seat, etc. It already had a new exhaust manifold and the 180kph limiter removed, so I assume it’s running some kind of map. I’ve just been thrashing it at the track non-stop—mostly Fuji Speedway now, since I need something with higher speed after all that autobahn time. The wheels on the R34 always pissed me off—too big, and it was a nightmare getting tires to fit properly under the arches. So I threw in the towel and bought something that fits better. Looks way cleaner too (at least to me)—less hotboy, less attention-seeking. Still an R34, though. Now for future plans. There are a few things still outstanding with the car. First up, the rear subframe needs an overhaul—that’s priority one. Next, I need to figure out an engine rebuild plan. No timeline yet, but I want to keep it economical—not cutting corners, just not throwing tens of thousands at a mechanic I can barely communicate with. And finally, paint. Plus a bit of tidying up here and there.
    • Nope, needed to clearance under the bar a little with a heat gun, a 1/2" extension as the "clearancer", and big hammer, I was aware of this from the onset, they fit a 2.0 with this intake no problems, but, the 2.5 is around 15mm taller than a 2.0, so "clearancing" was required  It "just" touched when test fitting, now, I have about 10mm of clearance  You cannot see where it was done, and so far, there's no contact when giving it the beans Happy days
    • It's been a while since I've updated this thread. The last year (and some) has been very hectic. In the second-half of 2024 I took the R34 on a trip through Germany, Italy, France and Switzerland - it was f*cking great. I got a little annoyed with the attention the car was getting around Europe and really didn't drive it that much. I could barely work on the car since I was living in an inner-city apartment (with underground parking). During the trip, the car lost power steering in France - split hose - and I ended up driving around 4,000kms with no power steering.  There were a few Nurburgring trips here and there, but in total the R34 amassed just shy of 7,000kms on European roads. Long story short, I broke up with the reason I was transferred to Europe for and requested to be moved back to Japan. The E90, loved it. It was a sunk cost of around EUR 10,000 and I sold it to a friend for EUR 1,500 just to get rid of it quickly. Trust me, moving countries f*cking sucks and I could not be bothered to be as methodical as I was the first time around.
    • I assume clearances were all a-okay?
    • Shock tower brace is in +5Kw....LOL
