hey guys. id like to fit a fmic and possibly coilovers to my 33s2 but dont want the hassle of getting defected or incase of accident getting claim refused.

i know that with intercoolers most of them cut though the frame/body (or where ever it gets cut) to make the piping fit which is obviously illegal, but what about the ones that use the original piping and only have the reo trimmed. are these deemed legal or still not because of the reo trimming.

or better yet can anyone put point me in the right direction of a company/s that do fmic that would be legal or is there somehow can you make a front mount legal for road use.

and with regards to coilover suspension i am pretty much after the same info regarding legality.

im so confused with all the laws regarding what can and cant be done so i thought someone might have a better idea on here

i live in qld btw.

cheers for your help all

pete

ARC, Blitz & PWR are all I know of that make turn flow fmic's for skylines. They are all legal and you won't need to cut anything.

Coilovers are a bit of a grey one. Seeing as they come out with coilovers technically. You have to keep 2/3 suspension travel and I think from memory it's not allowed to have adjustable height.

Front Mount Intercooler's are legal and you can have them placed on your mod plate paperwork (Although there is not a specific code for them it shows confirms that it has been installed in accordance with good engineering practice).

YOU MUST NOT cut through the front reo bar as it is illegal as it compromises the structural integrity of your front bar.

You can make cuts through the body where they are cut for a GTR as the body shell is generic (I have helped someone on here forward a letter to Qld Police for a defect of the same nature and had it pulled as a result)

My tip is to buy a Greddy (or similar type) front mount kit that is fitted without any cutting as that is what I will have for my wifes car.

Coilovers are fine as long as your car is legal height as I have never heard of police defecting someone over coilovers except in circumstances where they were too stiff.

cool. thanks for your help guys, when you say greddy or similar, who else would you say is similar to greddy. i have read about the blitz lm intercoolers that are return flow but as far as im aware i would need to cut the reo. do you know of anyone that does return flow that i wouldnt need to cut reo to make it fit. also would i need to get the fmic mod plated.

I would only have a mod plate as back up if you cut a hole in your car. If you dont cut you dont need one.....

Depending on your power output I would just go the Greddy LS. Ive got a no name kit on my 525rwhp R33 and its been going great guns.

Call Steve from Motion Garage 0407672023 as he does awesome work (Did both exhausts (Stainless) and cooler fitments (beautiful welding on pipes which are custom made) on both of my cars). He has also fitted heaps of kits like the Greddy Kits that are fixed without holes.

He is also be good for advice on what you want and is unbelievably affordable. I got quoted $1300 for a mild steel exhaust system and he did a custom made full stainless system for the same price and my power outputs have been awesome with no restriction.

The need to cut the rio bar usually comes from 300mm+ intercoolers in height dimension & is totally illegal here in Qld(cutting Rio). There are plenty of IC's that are shorter in height & will fit behind the front bar without the need to hack into the Rio. All you would then need is to run return route pipework back to the stock layout.

Your best bet is to ph Qld Transport with regard to Height Adj. coilover type suspension.

I know plenty with them & most who have the car at some respectable height never seem to have issues with the police with regard to having them in-however the only guaranteed legal option with their regard/to my knowledge is a set of TEIN's that have been installed professionally with a locking tab & certificate issued-ie by Fulcrum to be of a height no less than 100mm from the lowest point of the vehicle to the road surface.(Teins being not the only option here)

Personally I dont believe that the suspension is working to maximum efficiency when the car is at a height of 100mm as all the suspension geometry is out & without installing roll ctr adjusters & the list goes on to get it right-good road handling quality will be sacrificed, so you are flogging a dead horse all in the name of looking Low-rider Gangsta-but to each their own I guess.

hey mate

blitz do return flow intercoolers that run straight back into your original piping mines for a 32 but i didn't have to cut the reo bar which is illegal all i had to cut was the front bar coz she wouldn't fit heres a pic

cheers

No u can't make cuts thru the body.

Every turbo car with a fmic that has the piping going thru the left side inner guard has a defect, and there's nobody in town that can legally fabricate the body to make any engineer or qld transport happy... its getting rediculous.

I can't drive my car at all, also half of my mates.

I know GTR's have a hole in the R/H side of the engine bay just above the rail under the battery in 32's, this is covered by a plate that is spot welded and can be removed and the intercooling

pipe goes through there. its the same as having a GTR its a factory hole and is legal.

i think by the sounds of it going for a return flow would be the better option.

i suppose ill have to suss out whats on the market that will fit without cutting the reo.

going by the above post blitz should fit, anyone know any others?

also is it the height thats causing the reo to need cutting on most or width, length?

in regards to suspension, i think ill just end up getting a shock, spring combo.

bilstein shocks/whiteline springs etc. more than likely ill never end up taking the car on a track

so i dont think ill really need coilovers.

    • Nice, thanks for sharing your progress....that's a pretty long list you are putting into it!
    • Decided to upgrade my pressurised plastic coolant expansion tank for a fancy pants alloy version The OEM versions can get brittle, even the new plastic one I got when I first got the car is a starting to show signs of "stress" I wasn't cheap, but it is basically unbreakable
    • Morning all, I have an RB25DET Neo that's in need of a rebuild. Will need new pistons etc due to detonation damage. Would anyone be able to recommend a shop in Southeast Queensland who I could bring my long motor to for a rebuild? Just want someone who knows RBs and whos built a bunch of them before. TLDR - recommended engine shops for RB rebuild.
    • Gday Thought it was about time I started a build thread! As expected this project has snowballed into a huge financial liability, but unless you’re strong willed and responsible, it’s not a surprise. Background -  My first turbo car was an R32 GTS-4, got my full license and then totalled my Au Falcon a week later, so while trying to sell my RMZ450 dirtbike to buy another car a bloke offered to swap the R32 which at the time I felt like I was ripped off but looking back and seeing prices of those now ($40kish) it was a good deal, I didn’t know enough about these cars to appreciate what I had so sold it before the RB20 blew up. Between here and there, out of 12 cars I’ve owned the note worthy ones are a V8 Lexus SC400 (soarer), a couple of XR6 Turbos and my beloved S15 which I had for about 3 years, picked it up for $12500, repairable write off but she was fine, gun metal grey/pewter and bone stock/unmolested until I got my hands on it. Ended up spending about the value of the car and 280kw, 2 demerit points by the time I got defected and sold it for $14500 (also $40kish in today’s market, rip) Fast forward to the present day, I’m in a much better position financially and daily an MQ Triton (great cars, pipe down Ranger Bois), I cruised marketplace and car sales for a few months looking for another R32, the best deal I could find was an absolute rust bucket half finished project for $12000, until this R33 popped up in Port Macquarie for $18k - unregistered and barely running but decent shape, kept an eye on it for a few weeks and the price steadily dropped, $16k then $15k then $14k, that was the point where I was like shit someone’s gonna snatch this up! It was owned by a young bloke who had big plans but him and his missus just had a baby so smartest move financially for them but big gain for me. So 2 days later I’m towing a car trailer to pick this thing up. Roughly 2 weeks and $3500 later I’m cruising around Newcastle in my beat up R33 all smiles and dose noises! It only needed some basic shit to get it going, coil packs and air flow meter, electrical stuff and all fluids changed, 158k kms and running pretty good, nice smooth engine after oil and coolant flush - when I say coolant I mean it had been filled up with tap water, every gallery and heater element was filled with rust, 8-9 flushes later and still had brown liquid coming out but she’ll be right. The car was painted R34 Bayside Blue at some point but whether it was a cheap job or just not looked after is anyone’s guess, clear coat flaking like sausage roll.  Was rethinking my choices and contemplating life, had it up for sale for $22k - still cheaper than any registered R33 but got little interest, next minute I had an opportunity at work - 6 months overseas for good money, so that was a no brainer, fast forward again and here we are with a 50% finished project. Current Mods - 200ish KW according to butt dyno Was tuned with Apexi PowerFC EBC (old school Greddy Profec)  Stock turbo (more shaft play than a Tinder date gone right) 3inch turbo back Varex muffler  Aftermarket injectors of mystery size, Power FC showed 36% duty cycle at full boost so not behd good size Someone had good intentions but stuck with the stock R33 MAF so we had misfires at 6000rpm due to the MAF hitting 5.2V So far I’ve redone the entire interior with carpet form Car Mats Direct, new Seats and steering wheel from Autotechnica, also sound system by Autobarn (mainly Kicker) Also MCA pro comfort coil overs - Hands down best purchase yet, worlds of improvement over the tired 30yrold shocks Goals - 450kw/600hp on flex tune New paint job - Midnight Purple 2 Engine is at the shop getting rebuilt with forged rods a pistons, new valves and springs, ATI Harmonic balancer, Aeroflow 7.5L sump, rear head drain and oil restrictors as per oil control thread* and cam covers modded for larger breathers, other stuff I can’t recall of the top of my head Parts purchased and to be installed once the engine is done -  Engine loom from Wiring Specialties including these options: Haltech Nexus S3 R35 Coil pack conversion  PRP Dual Trigger kit Fan controller  Other Parts -  262 Kelford Cams Turbo - Hypergear ATR43SS3-ProS with T51R mod (whistly boi) 6 boost manifold (high mount) 50mm Turbosmart Pro gate (plumbed back for legal reasons) HKS Super Turbo Exhaust with High Flow Cat Custom 3.5inch dump and front pipe 1500cc Bosch injectors  Fuel Pump walbro 525 Haltech MAP and IAT sensors Haltech Flex Sensor Fenix Radiator with dual thermo fans LS1 Alternator Kit Oil Filter Relocation from EFI solutions and Cooling pro oil cooler Many other things sitting in my garage waiting for that engine to come back. • Losses have to be less with DC coupling. Provided the battery inverter has decent MPP tracking ability - which really shouldn't be a problem. It's not 2005 any more.
