Hey guys,

I'm interested in various people's opinions on the ultimate set up for the 'standard GTR' track day class.

Drawing your attention to:

Standard Class:

(List of Free Mods allowed in standard class)

Suspension - All

Brakes - All

Electronics (ECU, Boost Controllers) - All

Intercoolers - All

Pods

Wheels Sizes

Modified Classes:

(Any of these Mods will put you into modified class)

- R Spec Tyres / Slicks under a UTQG rating of 100 tread wear (not including 100)

- A Roll Cage

- A stripped interior. Removal of rear seats only is allowed.

- Any other major weight reduction such as fibreglass doors or perspects windows

- Fuel Systems - Any two out of the following four modifications to either: 1.Injectors, 2.Fuel Pump, 3.Non Nissan OEM Turbo's, or 4.A fuel pressure modification will put you into modified class. (I.E - Only one fuel system mod is allowed)

- Non OEM Engine Capacities (GTST with RB26, RB30; GTR with 2.8L, etc)

(GTR Standard Class)

Any of these turbo's are considered a standard spec replacement turbo and are not considered a turbo mod.

R32, R33, R34 N1's, HKS GT-SS's, Garrett GT2860r-7.

My guess is that you would choose the turbos with the most low down response / linear power delivery, that max out close to the limit of the standard injectors combined with an upgraded fuel pump (approx 280RwKw?)... ie standard R34 turbos??

Not much need to replace the standard cooler at this level of tune I'd imagine. And not much need to get an electronic boost controller, just remove the brass boost restrictor?

Ok the first question; how big is the budget?

You will get a heap of different responses here, it really is a can of worms you've opened. For example i have a built RB2630 with HKS GT-RS's, love everything about it. I dislike -7's. Someone else may love -7's but dislike RB30's and/or GT-RS's :P

I've got Falken RT 615 semi slicks, braided lines, ferodo pads, new clutch, hard pipe kit, 6K worth of suspension mods.

Couple of issues I wanted to generate some discussion on. Ie choosing a good setup... within the mentioned rules.

GTRS's are not allowed, you have to choose the turbo from the list. But what is the point in going for a larger turbo like the gt SS or garret 2860-7's when you are limited by fuel Supply? The rules say you are only allowed one fuel mod. Ie either injectors OR fuel pump. I figure the most you can safely get would be around 280rwkw by upgrading the pump.

I figure power FC, fuel pump, R34 GTR turbos would be a good combo within these prescribed rules.

Other opinions?

Slimjd - in the interest of sportsmanship, you dont cheat. Its a club motorsport class.

Anyway... you could always just ask SAU-Vic members who are currently in, or have been in, that class... being its the Vic Motorsport class your talking about :P

Some of them have been going around in circles for a few years and probably already have a pretty good idea of what makes a GTR fast in Standard Class.

If you understand GTR's Luke, you can get to 330rwkw easily within the restrictions, however can you use that much power on street rubber and be fast? :)

Being you are on street tyres, you are better off getting suspension and brakes, complemented with the best tyres you can buy rather than chasing the power... that would come 2nd being you need to get used to the car for a season or two anyhow. You'll want to consider turbos as well. Pushing GTR turbos (stock ones) @ the track is a very bad idea. Less emphasis on the power either way.

Good advice there. you need to stop dispensing so much of it, poor young thing i am, theres only so much awe i can produce  lol i kid i kid...sounds good though.

So i'm gonna say. yeah. what he said ^

Thanks for the great advice guys.

Had my first track day at Sandown a few weeks ago and loved it (apart from hitting 180km speed limiter half straight). Definately keen just to enjoy my car in its current light tune for the moment, and improve my driving.

In the future though, sounds like a new stock fuel pump, injectors, 2860-7's, and power FC would be a good combo.

Direct deposited my skyline club membership fee today, hopefully can still sign up for the winton track day in early July!

Anyone else going?...

Cheers,

Luke.

    • Oh ok that makes so much sense. Thanks for clearing it up!
    • And these modern "environmentally friendly" EV vehicles also run on the same smoke! When the engine, wiring, or batteries let it escape it also stops running!
    • Yeah - I found the same information too.. 30% open is like 85% of flow etc. So it's probably going to be minor if not completely imperceptible. I also have a larger pod filter here, will swap that on and see if there's any difference. The hardest part is finding a place to uh, test this. It's quite noticable just how much having ducting to the otherwise completely open pod cools the intake temps down. It's better boxed, or shielded but driving for 30 seconds really makes it plummet to near ambient temperatures. I recall in the past when I was a RB land and had a nice flowing airbox -  - Then I took the lid off and put a pod there, and gained 9 psi of boost and about 60kw from the restriction I didn't know I had - with the controller at same duty cycle. However finding people using over the radiator intakes having similar KPA drops at WOT on built setups makes me think there restriction could be the exhaust or potentially the headers. Either way though, there's no real estate to play with and nothing that can realistically be done about it. The original dyno plot without the airbox, and the larger pod had a better curve. It was later I added the ducting and airbox, and a smaller pod to make it fit in there...
    • That's not completely truthful now is it? Any flex fuelled factory cars also had the option to run on steam.
    • Yeah so I guess your mechanic would know turnaround better than me....but I would have thought you had access to same day or overnight rack rebuilds there....any big city here in Australia has that service.   There are a couple of o-rings and seals involved, I guess the risk is the part is specific not general. Other option is if you can have it on stands in your garage for a while, steering rack removal is pretty simple (2 mounting brackets, 2 ball joints (separate by undoing the nut to the top of the threads, put a pry bar between the steering arm and control arm to put pressure on it then medium force on the side of the ball joint or top of the nut with a hammer to break it free) and then the trickiest bit is the splines to the steering rack (not too bad to undo, one nut then it slides out, but mark it first so you can reassemble it straight)
