So in other words, a cannon going on my 2.5" system whether it be 3" or 2.5" will make an insignificant difference in power, and just be there for looks. If thats the case I'd go with a 3"

Thanks for all the info guys, appreciate it. If you have anymore keep it coming, as I'm not getting it done til mid-week so still plenty of time to deliberate! :)

yes, after all the piping before the muffler, the size of the muffler means very little. 3" will be louder and probably more droney.

you also have to remember that the engine is only 2.5L so 2.5" would be the largest exhaust size you would want to go even with cams, etc unless it is a seriously cranky engine and is pretty much only a track car. much bigger engines cope with 2.5" exhausts as sports systems without any problems. i have seen dyno tests where people have compared a single 2.5" system to a twin 2.5" system on a 3.5L magna and there was pretty much no gain at high rpm, but the twin system had less low down power.

Got a 2.5" system, custom extractors from DKNE in NSW, HPC coated; hot dog muffler, resonator and a 3" cannon.

Now I'm waiting to get pulled up and defected because its loud as all hell.

All up it cost me

$850 - HPC coated extractors

$1000 - 2.5" system & cannon

$150 - Head gasket from nissan

Worth every cent I reckon  I'm very happy with it.

Thanks for all the help guys, I really appreciate it.

    • R34DE as in R34 with an RB25DE? So did you get this? Or you planning to?  I'm not really sure what you're saying.
    • Possibly avoid using a Cometic one unless the deck/head surface are perfectly flat. I did have a look just then and forgiving gaskets such as Tomei or Nitto don't exist for the FJ20, however the Bar-Tek or Kameari ones look good and might do the trick.
    • Because pipe threads for pipe things. M threads for bolt things. Throw some teflon sealant onto it and dust your hands off knowing you did the right thing, instead of going twice around the block to achieve a result using the wrong things. Of course, all of these solutions are ignoring the fact that the minimum thread pitch we're talking about here is 1.25mm, with the 1/4" in NPT or BPS being out around 1.4mm. You will need to know that the boss you're tapping has enough thickness for at least a few threads. That's one of the reasons that 1/8" is commonly used - because the pitch is <1mm. And why would you look to use 1/4" NPT in a BSP country anyway? Ugh.
