Noticed that my series 2 R33 GTST has a form of electronic boost control that runs from the factory ecu. I plan to fit a Apexi PFC and its boost controller. However will the Apexi PFC alone run the standard factory boost controller to a higher setting or is it necessary to remove the factory boost controller and replace with the Apexi equivalent.

Apparently, so i have read, it controls the rate that boost climbs and the amount of boost in each gear so as to give a more linear power delivery, very common on Audis. Audi uses them to adjust boost pressure with climate to give a more constant power delivery for each drive. Ya know how colder weather helps turbo cars to make better hp...the audi drops boost when this happens to keep power constant.

It is located on the passenger side strut tower, looks like a small solenoid with three vacium/pressure lines running to/from it. One is from the wastegate itself, one from the alloy elbow that goes over your rocker cover(s) that would read pressure and one that bleeds air back into the intake of your turbo. Can you see how it works? Some of the boost from inlet is bled back into duct just before turbo before the remainig boost is used to push wastegate cannister open and hence control boost. I have heard that this common only to series 2.

snake all R33's have that solenoid and it doesn't control boost like an EBC, it just opens at around 4800-5000 rpm and bleeds a little air off to increase boost by 2psi as steve said. If you watch your boost gauge you'll see what we mean. To fit an EBC simply remove the solenoid first.

i see, it stages the boost through the rev band...dont have a boost gauge yet thats why i assumed it was for different purpose. So unless you plan to keep standard boost it is virtually useless because of its limitatin to only lift boost by 2psi.

To: Steve dude

I don't have a boost controller, therefore i'm not sure what sort of the boost i'm getting. But when i in the full acceleration, it will goes up to + 3.5. So how much psi am i running?

And may i ask if i don't have a boost controller, can i set up the boost? Lets say, run it to+7 !

Cheers mate

steven

Your guage reads in x100mmHg, about 3.5 is about 7psi. +7 is acutally around 14psi, which is well beyond the safety of the stock turbo - you may get away with it for a while if you have a FMIC and decent exhaust, but it wont last.

You +3.5 indicates to me that you dont have an aftermarket exhaust? Or if you do, its not flowing very well - best sort that out before you start tweaking boost, remeber the exhaust gasses have to go somewhere, or they decrease engine efficiency, so you should try and get your exhaust flowing as well as possible. As an added bonus, you will get more boost with a free flowing exhaust.

The stock boost guages are not in my opinion to be trusted anyhow, as they are not calibrated well enough to read accurately, and have few pressure scale markings.

to increase boost you will need either a bleeder which is quite cheap, or an EBC which isnt so cheap.

but when i bought the car, the owner show me the receipt about the aftermarket exhaust. It said for front mufflers is $95, and the 180 Muffler is $240.(Not sure what is it mean) Therefore i think i got the turbo cat exhaust or aftermarket exhaust. Becasue when i looked at the back of the exhaust, it looks quite big, its bigger than the coke can a lots. Can u tell me how can i see/ where i can see, i had whether an aftermarket exhaust or not please?

Cheers mate

steven

Have a look under the car, if the pipes are around 3 inches or 80mm+ it is probably ok. Best way is to buy a cat back system, just buying mufflers will help a bit, but only if its a decent one = there is alot of crap out there.

And if he paid $95 for the front muffler, it could be something like a turbo muffler which are crap and just give the exhaust a nice note.

    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
    • I'm not going to recommend an EBC pad. I don't like them. Just about anything else would suit me better. I've been using Intima pads for a while now.
    • Agreed, and in particular the earth strap that should go from the subframe to the chassis but it often broken or left off. There is a section in the R32 workshop manual you can follow for troubleshooting if you don't see anything suspicious, and depending where you are (there is no location on your user profile) you should be able to get your hands on a second hand replacement unit still if needed
    • Yeah they mention as a R34 for 2.5 Turbo...but then again thos "small" were also for R34 by that different site. But i look into it and that 310mm EBC is for R34 GTT. And by those you linked the specs are the same 🙂    EDIT: I found these on one site here: DBA 4000 series T3 DBA42304S They are 310mm...and it says are for R34GTT...are there good? EDIT2: ok they have pads too.  What "color" should i get for street use? I dont want/need some noisy ones...(and if they are not that dusty that is good too)
    • Yeah, shame. Maybe  driver's carpet is available 🙏. I am waiting for both amayama and nangun to confirm.
