So if you haven't heard of it already, Nikon is offering $200 off its kits from authorised resellers.

This brings a D5000 kit under the $1000 mark and the D90 to around $1200ish. I'm aware that the two use the same sensors, but the processor on them are different, which accounts for the D90's 4.5 frames per sec.

The lenses that come with both kits are different, with the D90's lens coming up trumps, but Nikon owners accumulate lenses, so I'm not gonna consider addon parts in the equation, just the bases themselves.

What I wanna know is if anyone on here has used both and found any noticeable differences in the pictures they produce? Also in your opinion is the extra cost of a D90 worth it over a D5000? I'm not someone who's gonna run a photography business etc, I'm more of an amature shooter. The closest I'll probably ever get to serious work might be a personal sextape or two.

So if you get a D5000 as a package its $200 off - body only is $100 off, but if you get a D90 its $200 off regardless?

If so Id get a D90 body only (get 200 off) and then just buy a nifty fifty (ie f/1.8 50mm for like $191)

You'll take fkn awesome pics

ps LOL at "sextape or two"

all the cheap places I found to buy either are all selling import models, which don't qualify for the discount.

FFFUUU

hmm not a bad point about buying the body only and then adding on lenses, also the single lens D5000 kit only gets a $150 rebate, so technically buying a D90 body with a $200 discount is actually better value for money. Especially given that buying lenses from HK or the US is way cheaper than locally.

Try that, Shan, some of them are already just under the $1200 mark.

that's exactly what I did lol. When I contacted them, most of them told me that the models they sold were ineligible as they were parallel imports, not supplied by Nikon Oz. Its the old import vs domestic saga.

Hahaha, I was actually gonna add that whole "...but just check if they're local Nikon-certified units or not" statement too.

Damned shame, it would be good to find an eligible one for $1200 before the discount was applied.

BTW, since having bought my own DSLR, I've been going to Digital Camera Warehouse to buy stuff when I'm in that area (they're in Canterbury, so it's usually when I'm on the way back from the airport or visiting my old workplace to catch up with friends), but they do have a shop in Melbourne too, and their prices are amongst the best as far as I've noticed so far.

tracked down a list of official dealers for Nikon:

also came across their sales pitch about fringe dwelling grey importers lol:

sound familiar?

gonna try my luck at Officeworks or Myer, see if I can haggle a better price. I have better luck haggling with clueless sales reps than at a pro camera shop where they know their stuff.

haha yeah - might also be worth going between JB and hardly normal

see if you can get them to match each others best deal etc

(in my experience myer is always exxy)

Which one is a little over-priced, mate?

Digital Camera Warehouse i think he means...

but yeah like funky said not Nikon OZ

D90 Body:

$1495 - www.digitalcamerawarehouse.com.au

$1449 - www.dirtcheapcameras.com.au

$1235 - www.d-d-photographics.com.au

D5000 Body:

$1320 - www.digitalcamerawarehouse.com.au

$1260 - www.dirtcheapcameras.com.au

$989 - www.d-d-photographics.com.au

Goodguys just sent out an invitation for a sale on Thursday night, "Supplier Invoice Price + $1" on all items in store. Hopefully that drops the price down a bit from $1400ish.

CBF dealing with grey importers, I can buy em direct and not pay the importer the middle man fee. Base body for D5000 is about $800 including shipping direct out of HK. The whole point of this exercise is to get a domestic model as cheap as possible by capitalising on multiple discounts.

I know you have already said you don't want too, but to all the other people out there looking for a special on camera gear, seriously beware buying from grey importers. Yeah it might be cheap, but just wait til something stuffs up and see how long it takes your gear to get repaired/replaced.

I bought a 40D from a grey importer, it error 99'd and it took 3 months to get my camera back. If i bought it locally in Australia, it would of been sent off to canon and back within the month or i would of got a replacement/refund. Many things can go wrong with bodies, but even more goes wrong with lenses. Just be wary that what is cheap is expensive in the long run!

If it works fine and perfectly for you, then dis-regard this message but it DOES happen and A LOT!

    • Working through possible solutions of converting my mechanical speedo.    Anyone know what type of speedo sensor the factory r34 gtr getrag has ? what the output is ? I assume its not a VSS and more a voltage like earlier speedo sensors ? Can an ECU read it ?

    • I can get more photos of it here soon and I plan to make a thread detailing the process. I received the car this way and it sorely needs refinishing. That is probably the most appealing photo of it. Up close it is fading, cracked, and needs to be re-glued. Depending on their condition I'm on the fence between refinishing or making a new set.  Another angle hiding the pimples and razor pumps
    • According to this thread the RS4V with build plate RC40 comes with the R200 diff @ 4.083 ratio as well (mine has said RC40 denotation). We may need to check if the axle stubs are the same pattern as well. The auto subframes have longer axles. However I think yours being a later Series 2 as well, we should have the same bolt pattern for the diff stubs. Unless your upgraded rear also has upgraded axles. Either way, I would not be opposed to pulling the covers to check so I can inspect that  fancy rear core  Also I don't have HICAS. I don't believe that should change things but I hope the people here with heaps more experience than me can correct me if I'm wrong   Let me know if you want to attempt to make this work and I can get some pictures of mine from under the car.
    • It's not that straightforward. For example I have had this code because my ignitor/power transistor wires were unplugged. It knows something is wrong but has no idea what it means. If you want to actually diagnose this I recommend following the service manual flowchart for code 21. Ohm out the harness, coilpacks, inspect the ECU, etc. And again, it's entirely possible for there to be no problem at all but if you're running a different coilpack it'll trigger the code because it doesn't like what it sees.
