Me too!  When do you reckon yours will arrive?  It'll be interesting to compare what gains we get once they are both tuned.

We might even be able to organise a group tune :D

Gavin does use Dysons Dyno but only because it's the best one within the immediate area. I mean, he could drive a few k's to get to one, but I'm pretty sure he'd have some type of deal with them.

I gather that Gavin can install the SAFC's seeming he can install the PFC's. I think it would be harder to do the PFC.

Just a question, why have you's choosen to go the SAFC and not the PFC? Genuine question because I'm looking at doing the upgrades soon myself.

Yeah, I more than happy to have Gavin tune mine on Dysons dyno... I reckon there would be a gentlemans agreement there somewhere too!

I chose the SAFC over the PFC as my car is auto :D Not interested in a manual conv ATM as the missus loves the auto and she drives it more than me. I also have minimal mods (exhaust, bleed, filter) so an SAFC should be OK... Not interested in a Wolf or Link as I don't reckon they are proven enough around here...

Plus the rice! RSM on the dash, SAFCII on the dash. Ultimate rice value! I could of used a Unichip or similar but then I'm locked into a tuner and I can't use the monitor to check knock, throttle, etc...

If i had a manual car it would be PFC all the way!

It seems the PFC's don't output some of the signals required by the Auto ECU and this causes some problems with the shifting of the auto...

Out of interest, Moanie is having some probs with her PFC and the ALSD ECU. I reckon it is a similar thing to the auto ECU prob so you might want to trial fit a PFC before you purchase Erin since you have ALSD too... Hate to be the bearer of bad news but I'd hate to see you buy one and have probs with it...

I hope mine arrives in the next week or two. Its my xmas present from my girlfriend, hehe shes so nice. I probably wont beable to get it tuned until sometime in january as Gavin is going on his christmas break soon and im pretty sure hes pretty booked out until then.

Would be great to orgainse a group tune, if we can find more people i'd be more then happy to see and compare what gains are made.

I'm also saving for a FMIC and i wanna get that fitted before i get the S-afcII tuned as it will save me money only getting it tuned once.

My car is pretty much exactly the same as yours strutto. I also have an auto with minimal mods (i got pod, bleed to 10psi, and 3" exhaust). Becuase mine is auto is the reason im going for the s-afcII also because i dont have a great deal of money and im not chasing huge amounts of power. I have a goal of 200rwkw which i think will be enough for me. I'm hoping ill beable to reach those figures

without having to buy a stand alone ECU.

Cool, mine should be here within a fortnight too. Its my Xmas present to myself :)

We will have to contact Gavin in the New Year and see what we can organise... We might start a thread re group tuning once the time gets closer?

FMIC is on my list too but it won't be done for a while yet...

My only worry at this stage is the power handling ability of the auto... I'm not sure how much they can take but I think 200kw would be getting close to the limits...

I had mine dynoed recently as I wanted to be sure that the fuel delivery was OK and the speedo was still accurate after the wheels and tyres...

I have an incabin bleed which stays closed pretty much all of the time. This equates to around 5psi on my boost gauge. This is how I dynoed the car. Best run was 138rwkw in shootout mode...

It definately has more grunt when running 10psi but it goes hella rich around 4000 - 5000rpm which causes it to bog down abit before picking up again. I'm hoping to get this tuned out with the SAFCII.

I think I'll use the 2 files in the SAFC for two boost settings. 1 for me, 1 for wifey...

Her tune will be for 5psi (she assures me she doesn't touch the bleed  ) and hopefully fairly economical.

My tune will be for 9-10psi and ideally with fairly safe AFR's (between 12 - 12.6)

If I start running out of fuel delivery then I'll hunt down a pressure reg and maybe a fuel pump...

Or thats the plan anyway...

I'm wondering ATM whether an SITC might be beneficial too?

Yeah, i'm keen for getting people together for a group tune, it would be great to meet up with some guys from here as i have only recently bought my skyline and dont know anyone yet

I know mine runs pretty rich too, i only ever run 10psi at night when i go for a cruise. I dont feel safe running 10psi all the time especially with the stock cooler and hot qld whether.

when you say 5psi on your boost gauge are you refering to the stock guage? Its not measured in psi. I know the +7 on the gauge equals to be about 13.5psi. Stock boost should be 7psi

I dont think youll need a fuel pump and pressure reg at this stage...but then again its always better to be safe....after i do the fmic and s-afcII then thats what im doing.

Whats a SITC? sorry im not familiar with that acronym hehe

With my goal of 200rwkw, i didnt take into account the auto box. I thought they were fairly strong? What can be done about making them stronger? I dont really want to convert to manual as it will cost like 2-3k and i feel the car will lose its quality when its done.

I saw this post and got a little worried :) I've spoken to "The Man" (read: Gavin) and he said there shouldn't be a problem, but if there is, the fault can be diagnosed and a there will be a way around it. As I said in my pm. I might search a few more avenues first.

I've met up with a few of the guys from here and have had some great times. The GT cruise over Mt Nebo was awesome!

Nope, I have a Splitfire gauge which although not the best in the world is far more accurate than the stock gauge... Stock boost is 7psi when using the standard ecu controlled bleed, which I don't. Stock wastegate actuates at 5psi so when my bleed is closed, the wastegate opens when the actuator sees 5psi...

Whats a SITC? sorry im not familiar with that acronym hehe

Apexi Super Ignition Timing Controller I believe... Allows you to modify the timing by + or - 15 degrees at 5 rpm ranges (800, 2400, 4000, 5600, 7200)...

I can't help myself. I just bought one (like 2 mins ago) from these forums for $170! Not sure if I'll use it yet... I'll see how we go...

With my goal of 200rwkw, i didnt take into account the auto box. I thought they were fairly strong? What can be done about making them stronger? I dont really want to convert to manual as it will cost like 2-3k and i feel the car will lose its quality when its done.

I honestly don't know the absolute power handling ability of the autos. The 300ZXTT's use the same box and some of them are making heaps of power... I think 200rwkw is the figure most people quote tho... I don't think they go bang, rather it just reduces the life of the box by quite a bit...

Some people have had the autos rebuilt with stronger bands and clutches but I think its quite expensive (>1K).

I agree with loosing quality in the auto to manual conversion but I've seen a few done and they are OK... I won't be doing it though...

I plan on getting mine pressure flushed with a new pan filter and some good synthetic Nissan approved fluid at some stage... I don't reckon I'll get much change from $350 tho... The fluid is around $70 for 4L (for the good stuff) and I think you need at least 7L :)

Heat is the big killer of autos so as long as you make sure it locks up when your thrashing it and you don't pull mega burnouts in 1st, I think we will be OK...

Well im glad i didnt set my goal any higher then 200rwkw, it gets damn expensive after that!!

Thanks for all your help strutto, you've been great! I've learnt so much off this forum already

I learnt alot of it here and on skylinesdownunder so there is hope for you yet :)

Practical experience is worth alot though...

Do your research, don't believe everything you hear / read, and know exactly what you want...

I have been great haven't I... :headspin:

  • 2 weeks later...
Well to add to the already growing list

Ive got my SAFCII and am ordering RSM, AVCR and Intercooler soon.

Will be getting it installed at Gavins, get a service at same time, easy i figure, dont know if ill get it tuned there though.

Your going to get gavin to install it but not tune it?? ... Are you nuts? Who else is going to tune it. As far as I know, Gavin is the only knowledgable mechanic around that knows apexi gear inside out. Some people say they know about it, but wouldn't have a clue, others have to read a manaul. To keep the costs down with installing items, Gavin road tunes them and then fine tunes them on Dysons' Rotary's dyno. Depending on what you want done is to how much time and how much it will cost. Remembering that sometimes they might need the car for more than one day, just to make sure it runs right. So you will have to ring up and find out all these things before you have it done.

Hey Strutto,

My S-AFCII arrived today. I've been looking at the wiring diagram and im having second thoughts about installing it myself. You seem knowlegdable and i was wondering when you install yours maybe we could organise to meet up and install mine too. I'll pay you in beer, burbon, cash whatever :D

Then perhaps we can goto Gavin's and get ours tuned together. I wont be getting my fmic till january and i dont wanna wait that long to install/tune it. Although im pretty sure Gavin is very busy from now till he goes on holidays soon, so we might not beable to get in anyway.

Let me know what you think dude

Matt.

    • OK, so again it has been a bit of a break but it was around researching what had been done since I didn't have access to Neil's records and not everything is obvious without pulling stuff apart. Happily the guy who assembled the engine had kept reasonable records, so we now know the final spec is: Bottom end: Standard block and crank Ross 86.5mm forgies, 9:1 compression Spool forged rods Standard main bolts Oil pump Spool billet gears in standard housing Aeroflow extended and baffled sump Head Freshly rebuilt standard head with new 80lb valve springs Mild porting/port match Head oil feed restrictor VCT disabled Tighe 805C reground cams (255 duration, 8.93 lift)  Adjustable cam gears on inlet/exhaust Standard head bolts, gasket not confirmed but assumed MLS External 555cc Nismo injectors Z32 AFM Bosch 023 Intank fuel pump Garret 2871 (factory housings and manifold) Hypertune FFP plenum with standard throttle   Time to book in a trip to Unigroup
    • I forgot about my shiny new plates!
    • Well, apparently they do fit, however this wont be a problem if not because the car will be stationary while i do the suspension work. I was just going to use the 16's to roll the old girl around if I needed to. I just need to get the E90 back on the road first. Yes! I'm a believer! 🙌 So, I contacted them because the site kinda sucks and I was really confused about what I'd need. They put together a package for me and because I was spraying all the seat surfaces and not doing spot fixes I decided not to send them a headrest to colour match, I just used their colour on file (and it was spot on).  I got some heavy duty cleaner, 1L of colour, a small bottle of dye hardener and a small bottle of the dye top coat. I also got a spray gun as I needed a larger nozzle than the gun I had and it was only $40 extra. From memory the total was ~$450 ish. Its not cheap but the result is awesome. They did add repair bits and pieces to the quote originally and the cost came down significantly when I said I didn't need any repair products. I did it over a weekend. The only issues I had were my own; I forgot to mix the hardener into the dye two coats but I had enough dye for 2 more coats with the hardener. I also just used up all the dye because why not and i rushed the last coat which gave me some runs. Thankfully the runs are under the headrests. The gun pattern wasn't great, very round and would have been better if it was a line. It made it a little tricky to get consistent coverage and I think having done the extra coats probably helped conceal any coverage issues. I contacted them again a few months later so I could get our X5 done (who the f**k thought white leather was a good idea for a family car?!) and they said they had some training to do in Sydney and I could get a reduced rate on the leather fix in the X5 if I let them demo their product on our car. So I agreed. When I took Bec in the E39 to pick it up, I showed them the job I'd done in my car and they were all (students included) really impressed. Note that they said the runs I created could be fixed easily at the time with a brush or an air compressor gun. So, now with the two cars done I can absolutely recommend Colourlock.  I'll take pics of both interiors and create a new thread.
    • Power is fed to the ECU when the ignition switch is switched to IGN, at terminal 58. That same wire also connects to the ECCS relay to provide both the coil power and the contact side. When the ECU sees power at 58 it switches 16 to earth, which pulls the ECCS relay on, which feeds main power into the ECU and also to a bunch of other things. None of this is directly involved in the fuel pump - it just has to happen first. The ECU will pull terminal 18 to earth when it wants the fuel pump to run. This allows the fuel pump relay to pull in, which switches power on into the rest of the fuel pump control equipment. The fuel pump control regulator is controlled from terminal 104 on the ECU and is switched high or low depending on whether the ECU thinks the pump needs to run high or low. (I don't know which way around that is, and it really doesn't matter right now). The fuel pump control reg is really just a resistor that controls how the power through the pump goes to earth. Either straight to earth, or via the resistor. This part doesn't matter much to us today. The power to the fuel pump relay comes from one of the switched wires from the IGN switch and fusebox that is not shown off to the left of this page. That power runs the fuel pump relay coil and a number of other engine peripherals. Those peripherals don't really matter. All that matters is that there should be power available at the relay when the key is in the right position. At least - I think it's switched. If it's not switched, then power will be there all the time. Either way, if you don't have power there when you need it (ie, key on) then it won't work. The input-output switching side of the relay gains its power from a line similar (but not the same as) the one that feeds the ECU. SO I presume that is switched. Again, if there is not power there when you need it, then you have to look upstream. And... the upshot of all that? There is no "ground" at the fuel pump relay. Where you say: and say that pin 1 Black/Pink is ground, that is not true. The ECU trigger is AF73, is black/pink, and is the "ground". When the ECU says it is. The Blue/White wire is the "constant" 12V to power the relay's coil. And when I say "constant", I mean it may well only be on when the key is on. As I said above. So, when the ECU says not to be running the pump (which is any time after about 3s of switching on, with no crank signal or engine speed yet), then you should see 12V at both 1 and 2. Because the 12V will be all the way up to the ECU terminal 18, waiting to be switched to ground. When the ECU switches the fuel pump on, then AF73 should go to ~0V, having been switched to ground and the voltage drop now occurring over the relay coil. 3 & 5 are easy. 5 is the other "constant" 12V, that may or may not be constant but will very much want to be there when the key is on. Same as above. 3 goes to the pump. There should never be 12V visible at 3 unless the relay is pulled in. As to where the immobiliser might have been spliced into all this.... It will either have to be on wire AF70 or AF71, whichever is most accessible near the alarm. Given that all those wires run from the engine bay fusebox or the ECU, via the driver's area to the rear of the car, it could really be either. AF70 will be the same colour from the appropriate fuse all the way to the pump. If it has been cut and is dangling, you should be able to see that  in that area somewhere. Same with AF71.   You really should be able to force the pump to run. Just jump 12V onto AF72 and it should go. That will prove that the pump itself is willing to go along with you when you sort out the upstream. You really should be able to force the fuel pump relay on. Just short AF73 to earth when the key is on. If the pump runs, then the relay is fine, and all the power up to both inputs on the relay is fine. If it doesn't run (and given that you checked the relay itself actually works) then one or both of AF70 and AF71 are not bringing power to the game.
    • @PranK can you elaborate further on the Colorlock Dye? The website has a lot of options. I'm sure you've done all the research. I have old genuine leather seats that I have bought various refurbing creams and such, but never a dye. Any info on how long it lasts? Does it wash out? Is it a hassle? What product do I actually need? Am I just buying this kit and following the steps the page advises or something else? https://www.colourlockaustralia.com.au/colourlock-leather-repair-kit-dye.html
