Hi all.Had my 100k service done yesterday and all the sudden the powersteering is leaking like a sieve. Before the service i never had a drop of oil under my car in the garage in the 16 months i have owned it.I had the workshop change all the ancillary belts as well as the timing belt, water pump, bearings etc.Could they have done something wrong to cause this or is it an amazing coincidence?Does anyone have a powersteering pump in good condition they want to sell?

If it started happening straight after you got the car back from your mechanic you should take it back and tell them. If it's too late for that now (seeing as though you posted this a week ago) check the low pressure hose under the power steering pump and see if it's leaking there. Mine was leaking due to being old and cracked, it was only about $24 for the hose but really difficult to get to so I got my mechanic to do it while he was doing another couple of fiddly things for me and had everything apart.

Failing that, or even if it is the hose but you can't be bothered replacing it, try using a bottle of power steering pump sealant that you can buy from auto spare parts shops. I think I used the Nulon brand one (not 100% sure though) on one of my previous cars (VS Commodore), it started off as a slow leak that I never got around to fixing but when the car started to leak a puddle of fluid on the garage floor after parking it more than a couple of days I decided I needed to do something. I didn't expect the sealant stuff to work very well but afterwards it sealed it up 100% perfectly and was still totally sealed when I sold the car about 6 months later.

I would've tried the fluid sealant option on the GTR, but a new hose was only $24 and my mechanic already had the car in bits to do other stuff, so I figured I'd just do it properly.

it's probably just one of the hoses .. mine was leaking so was replaced but started leaking again after a few months due to the hose shrinking a bit from being new so the clamp loosened up a bit ..

The area where it leaks below may be deceiving .. mine was actually leaking all the way at the front from the hose but the oil was travelling down the hose and dropping on the ground all the way back near the firewall/oil sump.

I am guessing that it is leaking from where the large hose from the resevouir joins the pump; alternatively, if the mechanic had it off I am guessing that one of the washers for the hose at the top of the pump are missing (there shoud be four, one on the top and one on the bottom of each banjo fitting).

    • Possibly avoid using a Cometic one unless the deck/head surface are perfectly flat. I did have a look just then and forgiving gaskets such as Tomei or Nitto don't exist for the FJ20, however the Bar-Tek or Kameari ones look good and might do the trick.
    • Because pipe threads for pipe things. M threads for bolt things. Throw some teflon sealant onto it and dust your hands off knowing you did the right thing, instead of going twice around the block to achieve a result using the wrong things. Of course, all of these solutions are ignoring the fact that the minimum thread pitch we're talking about here is 1.25mm, with the 1/4" in NPT or BPS being out around 1.4mm. You will need to know that the boss you're tapping has enough thickness for at least a few threads. That's one of the reasons that 1/8" is commonly used - because the pitch is <1mm. And why would you look to use 1/4" NPT in a BSP country anyway? Ugh.
    • Just throwing around ideas, does it need to be in the compressor cover? Why not the hot side piping?
    • 1/8NPT drill size = 8.7mm. Since the hole got messed up by me, it’s probably around 9mm.    So 1/4” NPT would be next step. A drill size of around 11mm would be preferred there which is not way of my M12 (drill 10.5mm and tap M12 threads)
