Engine setup is rb30det 1.06 3540 with a Turbosmart 48mm gate mounted out of the exhaust housing.

On spring pressure (15psi) the gate holds boost perfectly with perhaps 1psi creep maximum.

Ive now installed a Gizzmo IBC and now find that even with the gain on minimum setting and duty on 35/100 im still getting quite a bit of creep. Its installed as per the manuals reccomendations.

I would be interested to hear from guys running the same controller on a similar setup to mine.

Testing extensively on the roads isnt an option really either as 3rd gear traction isnt too good, and i really dont want to be revving out fourth gear on the roads. Will be taking it for a tune in a few weeks, but would rather get this solved first as otherwise ill buy teh same solinoid and hook it up to my link which apparently works well.

Any opinions would be great.

how old is the IBC? they have been superceeded by the MSIBC. That said we have used heaps without issue. some of the early IBC's had the menus set up opposite to the late ones from memory so you might find it is gain your adjusting not Duty. If you continue to have issues let me know as im good friends with the owner of Gizzmo and i am happy to test the unit in our race car (we have run both IBC and now MSIBC with no issues) if it is faulty we can upgrade the firmware to the latest.

That would be Ray Hall i presume? He seemed like a good sort in my dealings with him and hes a New Zealander as am I. Half the reason i brought the product was his support is supposed to be very good. That said my email to the NZ guys has gone unanswered for quite a while. I thought the MSIBC was no better control wise, just had more features????

The IBC would maybe be 18 months old. I have really just used it as a gauge so far as ive had so many teething problems with my car. Would love to send it to you but im in New Zealand, but cheers for the offer

How can i tell the model number? Button 1 adjusts the duty (this starts at 10 from memory) and button 2 the gain. 0/100. Are my gain settings perhaps too high? When i drop them down the car seems very sluggish getting onto boost.

Am i better to just flick it on and get another solinoid to go into my link or buy a Blitz etc?

Nah Ray Carter is the owner also an NZ'er, hes living working over here now in melbourne, GIZZMO is now based here also. Going gang busters in the UK and USA.

The MSIBC is one of the best controllers on the market, it is as good as the BLITZ dual solenoid jobbie we had on our car. The IBC was a good unit too and all the things he wanted to do processor wise and feature wise went into the MSIBC.

With the gain i normally datalog (road) or map (on the dyno) the boost and get my target boost with the gain set to zero, then i increase the gain untill i get a spike and back it off about 3 or so units. Most of time i end up between 10 and 25 units of gain. It is hard to get a seat of the pants setting because the more gain you feed in the better it feels but it causes it to spike too much especially when dropping back a gear and stomping on it... this is the same with all boost controllers with gain control.

Got hall and Carter mixed up. I emailed the Aussie link and got a responce from Ray straight away which is great.

Good to know your gain levels are much lower as that seems to be the issue then. I will drop them down and then work from there. What would be an abnormally high gain setting?

I had a absolute nightmare with my MSIBC initially, worked for 5 minutes on the dyno and the solenoid just stopped responding to the controller, and was given the syringe test as well.

Basically you turn up the solenoid duty cycle to get more boost, to do this is easy (Adjusting duty cycle section of the manual)..

B1 = button 1

B2 = button 2

Hold B2 for 2 seconds (brings us to the closed loop setting, if you want open loop press either button once to switch between)

Now that your at the closed or open loop setting, hold B1 & B2 together for a second

Now we're at the solenoid duty cycle menu, B1 turns the duty cycle up (or down I forget), B2 does the opposite (if B1 turns up, this turns it down)

Hold B1 & B2 for a second, now we're at the Gain menu (how quickly the turbo comes to boost), B1 turns it up, B2 turns it down

Hold B1 & B2 for a second to get back to the digital boost gauge.

Personally - it works great for me. I read somewhere(I think the gizzmo manual) that one way of combatting creep is to lower the Duty cycle a few degrees and increase the gain, that way, by the time it creeps, the solenoid has already stabalised the boost. Also, make sure you run it in CLOSED LOOP.

Getting heaps of boost is easy, its holding it that seems to be the problem. I think doing by the sounds of that that my solinoid may be buggered or perhaps ive got a controller fault.

Are the MSIBC's any better than the IBC's??? I know they have more features, but i was under the impression they have the same control.

Here are some pictures anyone of how i have it mounted. The line coming from the left of the T piece by the solinoid goes into the intercooler piping.

Only see some slight issues, the un-used port on the solenoid needs to be facing down (doubt it's causing your problems though). Is the solenoid close to any heat sources (turbos, either manifold, intercooler etc) ?

the port orientation is unimportant, its only wise to face it down to stop shite dropping in.

SIR; try plumbing it up as a actuator, ie right angles thru the solenoid and to the forward most port on your gate (below the diaphragm). If you were seeing slight boost creep with the thing at gate pressure you might find the added restriction of the controller is just making this worse.

It should work the way you have it hooked up (as this is the way i always do it with both ports of the gate) but the physical setup you have might just be to close to boost creeping anyway, or the unit is playing up.

Will keep playing with it. I dont think a 48mm gate out of the exhaust housing is likely to boost creep under any circumstances really.

Duty is set to 10% with gain now set at 0.

sorry in your first post you said it was creeping 1psi ? if its creeping @ gate pressure there "could" be an underlying issue made worse though i doubt it.

Duty @ 10 % is doing nothing, i havent had a setup yet that has seen an increase in boost at all until @ least 20-25 duty.

Have you got a bleed valve to bang in to try? or try it in actuator mode like i posted previous.

    • Good tips, will get on those tomorrow. When doing the maintenance I did move a few of those connectors around, and things that are old tend to not like moving around. (Like me).
    • Don't try it. It will be shit. Better chance of damaging the engine than gaining any knowledge about the old one. Maybe, but unlikely, especially if the O2 sensor is working. You can use NissDataScan to look at the stock ECU.   Cleaning the AFM is seldom necessary and seldom helps. The R35 coil & loom conversion should eliminate dud coils or plugs. But as you still have misses - look to the plug where the coil loom connects to the engine loom, and the CAS plug. Need quality connections there. Also look to injector plugs. And the AFM plug while you're at it. Also look to whether your injectors are clean and flowing evenly. Get them out and onto a testbench.

    • Hey folks. I've been lurking and browsing the forum for a while, since I got into my head that I wanted a skyline. Having purchased an overpriced completely stock GTT, (only "mods" it has is HKS pod filter and catback) now that it became legal in the US, it was all glorious and sututu noises here and there. But then I wanted to do things right and went to do basic maintenance. After all the fluids, filters done, I did the spark plugs, that's when the problems started.. First the car started spluttering at around 4.5k RPM. Which I gapped down the new plugs and that solved the sputter there, but the car now always misfires at idle with pops when lifting off and shifting 2nd to 3rd. Similar to the issues in this recent thread. I've been banging my head against the wall, reading the threads here and trying suggestions for a couple months now, so decided to start this one to explain exactly what I tried and what is going on. The symptoms of the issue: Idle and low revs misfiring intermittently. You can hear the exhaust tone change and the shakes on the shifter knob. It happens frequently, but doesn't seem to have a rhythm to it. Pops when backing off throttle. It pops and or burbles almost feels like it spits fire when it pops. (Happens mostly in 3rd gear at around 2k RPM). When under load and after 6k RPM, it also pops when shifting from 2nd to 3rd. There's a ticking noise at around 2k RPM in 2nd gear going downhill, seems unrelated though but I am out of educated and downright dumb guesses. Not noticeable lack of power when putting the car into load. The attempted diagnosis and solutions: Unplugging coils when the car is running This did nothing to change the idling and tone shift for every cylinder. Checking the exhaust headers with thermometer They all are within what I'd say it is margin of error of the laser thermometer New spark plugs Tossed two new sets, copper, iridium and using the old ones, still misfiring, even re gapped to 0.8mm, still same thing. MAF cleaned with the "specific" spray cleaner No changes in the issues what so ever. Brand new loom and r35 coil conversion (was going to add the r35 coils anyway) car runs arguably better, still misfires, but seems like does less frequently. Placebo? Code 21 now being thrown, thanks nissan gods. Removed the CAS to check the shaft for play or anything. CAS seems all fine, nothing that indicates any issue, visually speaking. Things to attempted next: Ordered a new MAF (chinesium from Amazon, to be able to return regardless of result). Fuel with proper gas, maybe it is this California water that they sell as gas that is to blame? Plugin the link ECU and check the info using the built in base map. Go back to BMW and eat my rob bearing breakfast without milky oil mixture.   Do any of you have experienced anything like this or have any suggestion?
